Last Resort Grill

A Classic City classic, at Last Resort Grill one can never go wrong. Located on West Clayton Street, Last Resort Grill first opened as a music club where musicians like Jimmy Buffett and Steve Martin performed. Now the restaurant stands to serve local farm to table cuisine with a unique twist, as depicted with their iconic kaleidoscopic mural of root vegetables. LRG, the colloquial nickname, serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expect to see items like their deconstructed BLT salad, pulled pork posole, or the Carolina crab cakes.

Finish the meal with a slice of one of the many cakes in their desert case that they get special made daily from Cecilia Villaveces Cakes. Your server will most likely suggest the white chocolate cheesecake. Last Resort Grill does not take reservations but you can contact them about special occasions. If you are looking for a more intimate environment, their sister restaurant LRG Provisions does catering.

South Kitchen + Bar

The soaring stained glass windows, mirrored walls and intricately tiled floors of South Kitchen + Bar almost places this space in 1940’s New Orleans. Formerly a hotel, South Kitchen + Bar focuses on Southern cuisine with refined technique. Lunch is served from 11 a.m to 3 p.m where you can try favorites like their duck fat tater tots, bar burger, and Low Country shrimp and grits. You can make reservations online, but for parties larger than six you must send in a reservation request to their private events service.

Named after the car dealership of owners Ryan and Alan Pope’s grandfather, The Place is a cozy gathering place located on West Broad just across from North Campus. The Place’s menu is inspired from a collection of family recipes with a modern twist to appeal to the UGA student or the Athens local. The lunch menu is served from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. where you can snack on the southern bruschetta and the fried veggies or try their famous buttermilk chicken sandwich with pimento cheese. For something a little lighter have the waldorf salad with granny smith apples, candied pecans, and bleu cheese, ask for the blackened salmon on top.

Home.made chef and restaurant owner Mimi Maumus was born and raised in New Orleans where she discovered and honed her passion and skill for southern cooking. Home.made’s lunch menu is notoriously known for Mimi’s snacks, offering pimento cheese straws, medjool dates with pimento cheese and almonds, pepper jelly pecans, housemade pickles and pickled deviled eggs. After a snack, move on to an entree of grilled salmon with tomato pie and sautéed kale and kimchi or toasted pecan chicken salad with dried cranberries and tarragon on a croissant.

The National

A culinary experience inspired by Mediterranean cuisine and European cafes, The National is one of the most sublime dining experiences in Athens. Executive Chef Peter Dale is able to bring the taste of the Mediterranean to landlocked Athens, Georgia, giving you a feeling of escape and tranquility.

Enjoy a glass of chilled wine or one of their craft cocktails and start with the medjool dates stuffed with celery, manchego cheese and paprika, along with the hummus served with a warmed flatbread. The National’s constantly changing menu is a reflection of its commitment to local agriculture and sustainability. One constant item on the menu, however, is the power lunch bowl which changes grains, vegetables, herbs, and protein depending on the season.
