For as long as there have been weddings, groomsmen have served one of the most important roles in providing assistance leading up to and on the big day. Most weddings have at least two, though the crew of groomsmen at a wedding can often extend well beyond that. Throughout history, groomsmen have served varied roles within a wedding. Centuries ago, groomsmen were chosen for their fighting skills to serve as a bodyguard for both the groom and the bride during the wedding. At times, it was even necessary for the groomsmen to be responsible for kidnapping the bride and bringing her to the wedding. Luckily, weddings evolved into less violent affairs where groomsmen play many different roles that (usually) don’t involve armor. When it comes to planning your wedding, it is important to pick the best men for this essential job and make sure they can effectively perform their duties for the event. In this blog post, we will go through four essential duties for every groomsman to play in a wedding.

1. Wedding attire

The wedding attire of a groom and his groom’s men is more than just a simple suit. It is important for the attire to pair well with the attire of the bride and her bridesmaids, and for all of the groomsmen to match. While groomsmen are often responsible for sourcing their own formal attire for a wedding, cohesion is necessary among all of the groomsmen. As with the attire of bridesmaids, it is important for the groomsmen attire to complement that of the groom, not overshadow. For some weddings, it may even be necessary for the best man to pick out a theme for the attire.

2. The speech

The best man speech is a pivotal part of every wedding reception, and any groomsman that serves in the honorable best man chair should work their hardest to make this speech go off without a hitch. Stumbling through a mediocre speech seems fine enough in the movies, but when it comes to a real wedding it is the last thing you want to do. As with any speech, it is important to plan ahead. A great speech should be written and rehearsed weeks in advance, as the best man needs to give himself time to perfect and memorize the material.

3. Bachelor party

The bachelor party is simultaneously the biggest responsibility and the biggest perk that comes with being a groomsman. Usually this event is planned by the groom and the groomsmen together, and is often the one wedding related event where the boys get to be the center of attention. When it comes to planning this so-called “last night of freedom,” it is important to pay attention to the groom’s wishes when it comes to the planning of the party and make sure everything is approved by him. Though it is never a bad idea to plan some surprises, everything happening at the party is something both the groom and the wife need to be comfortable with. Planning the bachelor party takes a combination of skill, intuition, and spirit, but can end up being one of the most rewarding and fun roles within a wedding.

4. Wear many hats

Finally, it is important to realize that every groomsman duty may not be anticipated. Whether it is ushering guests in and out of the wedding, cutting off intoxicated attendees from the wedding bar, or even emotional support for the groom, everything a groomsman faces cannot be adequately prepared for. However, it is important to remember that a great groomsman is able to wear many hats and provide support when needed for all things related to the wedding. This rewarding experience is an honor, and it is important to be the best man you can be when serving as a groomsman.
