Everyone talks about the mother and father of the bride and how special the wedding day is for them and their little girl, but what’s often overlooked is how special the day is for the mother of the groom as well. It’s a day for her to see her son all grown up, ready to start this next chapter in his life. And, what better way to celebrate that than the mother/son dance at the reception?

Whether you’re a country music, classic rock or 70s / 80s music fan, there are plenty of options for each mother-son duo to choose from.

Country music offers a long list of options for mothers and their boys to dance to. If Mom would prefer a more slow-dancing feel, options such as My Wish by Rascal Flatts, Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw, The Baby by Blake Shelton, and The Man I Want to Be by Chris Young may be perfect for the dance. Each offers heartfelt lyrics about mommas and their babies, and the man they hope their baby has grown up to be. A more upbeat vibe that would require swing dancing or fast steps may call for songs such as Sweet Child O’ Mine by Sheryl Crow or I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack.

Off the top of your head, classic rock wouldn’t seemingly have a long list of mother/son dance options. However, songs such as Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd are commonly used for this special moment. Other classics like The Wish by Bruce Springsteen, You’ll Be in My Heart by Phil Collins, Landslide by Fleetwood Mac (or the Dixie Chicks cover) and Wildflower by Tom Petty contain uplifting lyrics about life and who the child may grow up to be.

A singular favorite artist may have a long list of options for the mother son dance. James Taylor has at least one song on each of his albums that would be perfect for a mother son dance. Sweet Baby James, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), Carolina in My Mind and Fire and Rain offer soft, slow vibes that would be perfect for a slow mother-son dance where there is time for a heartfelt conversation between the pair.

Whether you have one favorite genre, one favorite artist or one favorite song, there are plenty of options for a mother and son to share a special moment on the dance floor before her son begins one of the best chapters in his life. There is so much to look forward to after the wedding, but this dance provides a moment that will be cherished forever.
