Relationship. Elizabeth Thornton (wife). Their friendship was slow to start when he was first posted to Coal Valley. Jack and Elizabeth married after five seasons of dating. Jack got an assignment to train other Mounties, so he had to leave his new bride. A landslide killed Jack a few weeks into the training. He saved two men but died. His death traumatized his young wife, Elizabeth, who was expecting their first and only child. Jack Thornton Jr. Rosemary Coulter (ex-fiancée) Jack was in a relationship with actress Rosemary LeVeaux before moving to Coal (Hope) Valley. Jack proposed to Rosemary, who accepted but later broke off the engagement. This hurt Jack. At the end of season 1, Rosemary arrives in Coal (Hope) Valley to find her fiancé Jack. Elizabeth is shocked and upset. Rosemary tries to get Jack back, but he says he’s moved on. Rosemary realizes a romantic relationship won’t happen and turns her attention elsewhere. Abigail Stanton: Jack’s confidante during his courtship with Elizabeth. In Season 2, he planned to propose to Elizabeth at the schoolhouse. However, he decided against proposing to Elizabeth after seeing Charles do it. He’s good at painting and drawing. Jack gets to choose between Rosemary’s fancy chicken fried steak and Elizabeth’s plain old chicken fried steak. He eats both, but realizes it was a mistake when he gets to Elizabeth’s. In Season 4, Jack proposes to Elizabeth, who accepts. The character was killed off because Daniel Lissing wanted to pursue other projects.

In the M.A.S.H series, Col. Potter’s wife was “played” by Spring Byington. The picture of his wife Mildred was on his desk and the picture was actually one of Spring Byington. According to many entertainment historians, the lovely and charming Spring Byington was most likely lesbian/gay. (As were Richard Deacon and most likely Joseph Kearns, though Kearns was devoutly Mormon, so he was probably very closeted as well.) Byington had a long-term decades-long relationship with actress Marjorie Main, most well-known as the character Ma in the “Ma and Pa Kettle” movies, according to Main’s biographer Michelle Vogel (“Marjorie Main: The Life and Films of Hollywood’s ‘Ma Kettle'”). (Main described her marriage as being one “in the eyes of the law.”) However, Byington was married early in her life and had two daughters before divorcing. Likewise, at the end of her life she was engaged to an Argentine industrialist, but the engagement was drawn out for several years, and he died suddenly without them ever marrying. Byington died just a few years later in 1971, at age 76.
