I’ve been using data from Menefee, who surveyed wife-sales in Britain. He found 108 known wife-sales between 1837 and 1901. 27 cases (25%) happened in Yorkshire. I found two more that Menefee didn’t document, bringing the total to at least 29 known Victorian wife-sales in Yorkshire.

Thing is, so many brides see a photo of a gown they think they love then when they actually try it on many times it’s disappointing because it doesn’t look like the bride thought it would. That happened to my daughter. She had a dress she picked out from a bridal magazine. We found a shop that carried the gown. She was so excited to try it on but when she did she didn’t’ like it. There were lots of gorgeous, big-name designer dresses she could have tried on from the sale racks without blowing her already generous $6,000.00 budget. She stupidly ignored the couture-class sale and Randy’s presence as a hands-on stylist. The sparkling $4,400 Isaac Mizrahi dress the other girl got for only $750.00 is a fantastic deal! With the minor alterations ordered, it will look super-classy at her beach wedding.

(Still would have been overpriced at 3K retail.) 2) With larger breasts, I’d avoid strapless styles that tend to show a wrinkle of cleavage above each armpit. 3) Glad to see them showcasing budget clearance gowns for a change!
That “Audrey Hepburn” dress is absolutely stunning: the woman got such a bargain. Lovely looking material that seems to be well cut and sewn, and a little out of the ordinary. The first brides dress is very nice, but not that all that different to so many on these shows. The prices are absolutely unbelievable, especially since they are samples, and so new dresses.
Really enjoyed this episode! I could so relate. I had an 800 dollar budget and found mine for 270 counting accessories I got with it! Able to use the other money to get my bridesmaids their dresses and had a little left over. It’s so important to remember that the memories is what matters more than anything. Not one person asked me the cost of my dress. What matters is what makes YOU happy ❤️

It shouldn’t be about spending thousands on a dress, it should be about finding something that works for you and your budget so you can enjoy your big day without worrying about the credit card bills for the rest of your life!
when i lived in Winchester, there was a charity bridal shop with loads of donated wedding dresses or samples donated from other shops, and I used to love the brides coming out with smiles on their faces knowing they had found the one sally, for the first bride, for the first dress the first dress was a bit too frilly, but still looked good on her the second one though was so unusual and I loved it, she looked stunning Tori, I love her attitude and she did look a bit “shrecked”, I love that line. so going to use that but the second dress, now that was wow. she looked so stunning, I loved it, it was so classic Hollywood glam
My whole wedding for 40 inc. 6 bridesmaids, venue, sit down reception, decorations, cake etc etc was just under 2k and over 10years later the guests still say to me that it was one of the best weddings they had ever been too. Dont get me wrong if you have the money and want to spend thousands then you do you but if you are on a budget it does not mean your wedding will never be a fabulous as the expensive one ❤
I like these brides! Really, you don’t need to break the bank just for a dress that you are probably never going to wear again. Actually, if I was a bride, I wouldn’t be adverse to just borrowing a wedding gown. Unless it was absolutely hideous, anything will be fine. But I like that they are buying gowns that are not 1000 pounds and more.
I have some basic sewing skills and experience with vintage as I love thrifting old clothes. A while ago I came across a gorgeous vintage 60s/70s wedding gown online after a bit of casual browsing and digging. There was a big revival of Victorian, Regency, and Medieval styles 50-60 yrs ago and the dress I bought is a high neck, mesh lantern Sleeve, A-line gown with embroidered cuffs and a huge lace embroidered train and it looks like a flowy, princess-y dress straight out of a Victorian dream. I got an incredible deal on it as it was a little yellowed and had a big stain on one of the arms. But with a little research, gentle soap, and a few hours of work, I have it back to it’s original color, unstained, and good as new. It’s unique, it’s exquisite, and it’s a reflection of me and my efforts, and in grand total I’ve spent $40 and a few hours of cleaning to get a beautiful gown. The idea that you should spend so much money on a dress is patently insane, you will wear it once. You should find something you love and feel confident in, but there’s not only one dress out there, and you don’t have to spend thousands to find something perfect!
The first bride reminds me in look and style of Gwyneth Paltrow. I knew she would look great in the column style. I had no idea the shop has a pre-owned section. I bought my gown never-worn on consignment. I got a style I really liked instead of the fashion of the day that was not exciting me. The fabric and embellishments would have been a lot in an ordered gown. In the end, it required so many alterations I had a custom piece at the end of it. If you go vintage, remember your alterations will be full-price. Mine cost more than the dress itself but I would never have found that look in a regular store and it was still equivalent to a great sale price.
I DO like this episode. Everyone needs to remember that SAMPLE wedding and formalwear are usually no larger than a size 12, which can be a fit that is much smaller or larger than the actual “number” on the tag. You just have to try them on. In my part of the USA, the church I belong to has both new and donated items in their stores that are open to the publc. You CAN find a nice wedding gown but you HAVE to watch constantly the best gowns get bought immediately, as our area tends to have a higher percentage of couples that choose to marry.
Honestly, if someone said I was too old for a dress, I would probably buy it out of spite. I contacted an old friend from high school, and she told me I was too old to have long hair at 30 and I remembered, oh yes, THIS is why we stopped speaking, because you’re so judgmental. I still have long hair and I’m a lot older than 30 now and if anyone says, “You should cut your hair,” I tell them, “You should f**k off”. Same thing applies to wedding dresses – pretty much anything, really.
