What is the definition of marriage?

Marriage is a union between a man and a woman that is regulated by laws, rules, and customs. It gives the partners rights and duties and status to their offspring.

Marriage is a legally and socially sanctioned union between a man and a woman. It is regulated by laws, rules, customs, beliefs, and attitudes that prescribe the rights and duties of the partners and accords status to their offspring (if any). Marriage is a universal institution because it provides structure for many basic social and personal functions. These include sexual gratification and regulation, division of labor between the sexes, economic production and consumption, and the satisfaction of personal needs for affection, status, and companionship. Marriage is also about having children, taking care of them, and teaching them how to behave. Marriages have taken many forms over time. Some countries gave same-sex couples benefits and obligations through registered partnerships or civil unions. These terms meant different things in different contexts.

Almost every marriage starts with joy. Not all couples live happily ever after. Many marriages end in divorce. Some couples stay married but grow apart emotionally. They share a name and a home, but not a life. How can couples keep their marriage happy and loving? Consider these seven principles.

1. Don’t take each other for granted. Couples who are courting or engaged spend a lot of time together. But after they get married, each person gets so caught up in their own interests that they neglect their marriage. The couple slowly drifts apart. There’s little conflict, but there’s no spark. The wife may notice something is wrong, but her husband says she’s worrying for no reason.

Some kinds of negativity can kill a relationship. We call them the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The four horsemen usually enter a marriage in this order: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Read more about the Four Horsemen and how to overcome them here.

Flooding means that your partner’s negativity overwhelms you. A marriage can end in divorce if the four horsemen are present during disagreements. These factors usually coexist in unhappy marriages. Read more about flooding here. When my team monitored couples during conflicts, we saw how flooding was physically distressing. One of the most obvious physical reactions is that the heart speeds up, beating more than 100 times a minute, up to 165. Hormones change, too, including adrenaline. Blood pressure goes up. What are the four pillars of a strong marriage?

Good communication is the key to keeping other things strong. A broken relationship starts with a broken communication. Couples need to be able to communicate about how they appreciate each other, value each other, and rely on each other. Couples need to be able to have difficult conversations and understand each other. To understand and apologize for mistakes. Couples need to understand their own and each other’s emotions and empathize with each other to meet each other’s needs. We talked about the four pillars of a relationship. Commitment, trust, respect, and communication. Your relationship is like a house built on these pillars. The pillars are connected. If one pillar is damaged, it will affect the others. What is the number one killer of marriages?

The main reason for the breakdown of any marriage or relationship is a lack of communication between husband and wife or partners. Communication is essential for any relationship. When it stops, misunderstandings, hurt feelings and the erosion of true love can result. If you don’t talk to your partner, you might feel distant from them. If you don’t trust each other, your relationship will fail. • I musta gotten an angel….my wife of 39 yrs. Passed at the age of 76 from acute organ failure…….she worked…at times 2 jobs to my one…raised grandchildren…cooked..kept a very clean house ( I didn’t care is she did..but she did!) And up until she became wheel chair bound at age 73, always had time for me in the bedroom, didn’t have to beg,she offered! In our 40s..50 s and early 60 s we went at each other at least once daily…….yes indeed I had an angel gifted to my unworthy self for 39 yrs!

  • There needs to be love for a marriage to last. People get together for the wrong reasons; it goes both ways, seeking sex is not love, seeking money is not love, and getting married out ambitions of status or dreams of a blue prince or pink princess most likely won’t get you too far in your marriage. True love both ways is the key. The comedian is funny, I’m not bitter about this article. PEOPLE RELAX!

  • Men are so serious in this comment section, expressing all their bitterness towards ex’s etc. It’s like if you got rid of the ex, why keep talking about her and hold onto the anger. This lady is sooo funny, remember it’s comedy. Just how male comedians joke about their wife and life, she’s doing the same.

  • Leanne is hilarious and the men in the comments need to not take this so personal, it’s comedy, HELLO………For all you know Leanne and her hubby may have the best sex life ever. You men in the comments make women think that’s all you care about in a relationship is sex. If you want more sex you may try being actually good at it…..lol😆😅🤣😂

  • That’s what I did after my wife ran off with a co-worker. Got a Girlfriend (rotate them out), bought a New house (never let a female move in with you), hired a Maid, and bought a brand new John Deere Tractor. The last one is for the 105 acres of hunting land I paid cash for. It’s amazing how much money you can save when your single. Dress in jeans and an old shirt with a frayed collar and drive a 16 year old pick-up with a dent in it. Don’t flash money.

  • Goodness, all these comments are so ugly & at first I couldn’t figure out why. Then I realized that they were from men, men who’d evidently forgotten that this was just a comedy bit & were taking it personally. I mean, she’s not cussing or degrading or any of the things that are thrown out in what we see in “normal” comedy bits. Well I guess it’s safe to say when guys have their cycle, they find the least offensive female comedian in the world, watch her skit & then berate her. Glad their times of the month aren’t synced up or they’d be at her performance welding torches. Geez fellas, calm down. No worries

  • I did it all and worked, cleaned, cooked, did my own laundry so I had clean underwear and socks for work while my ex talked on the phone all day or shopped. If I was working overtime she shopped overtime. She was ably to spend it before I made it and surpassed me. The sad thing was I made $100 as day plus on a normal basis in the early 80’s. So I finally one upped her and would fake allergy attacks when I moved our 5/8 of an acre lawn. It worked and she folded while I sat on the front porch with a hanky drinking beer. All of my neighbors wanted to know how I did it.

  • I would say definitely one thing that keeps a Man happy,is looking at all the Beautiful Women he sees, all the time, and even better it you could talk with them.I have experienced this in Life.I am sure this has happened with every man. This could apply to Women as well.I love Humour in Women.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.

  • Well I would add a little bit of intellectual conversation, interest in nature, history something more than yourself and your needs and your cloths and your car and your curtains and bedspread and your hair . A loving, loyal friend would be huge ! It may sound fake but I’d love to find a woman that loves God above all and doesn’t just decorate cute memory verses

  • No kidding, smart people in the military use the same cleaning trick. We had a general coming to visit our tiny radar site one time and they were holding a meeting talking about it and I told my commander that I wanted to be in charge of it (I needed a recommendation letter endorsed by the guy so I was already the guide for the day). They made me the cleaning “honcho” and I told all the shop supervisors to just pick up and sweep, don’t go crazy but don’t have trash laying around. I cleaned up the common areas and then took a rag with Pine Sol on it and wiped the door frames down about a half hour before he arrived. His first words through the door was “you guys have been cleaning in here.”

  • My wife said I needed to learn to cook for myself. Sure! why not? I told her the next time your car needs repair you should learn to fix it yourself! I’ll let you borrow my tools. I already wash dishes do my own laundry and vacuum the house AND still work full time at 65. She’s retired and sits on her ass all day perusal Jesus TV. It’s only fair.

  • I have just seen this “joke”. Isn’t it a shame that we have all become so cynical……Not all women are like this. I have never looked at a man as a “meal ticket”. When you meet someone for the first time pay your share – why would any woman expect a man to pay her cab fare home? It annoys me that the female species behave as they do towards men. We are not all the same – fairness, equality, honesty, compromise and compassion should be values expected in equal measure. Men, if a woman asks you to pay for her dinner and/or cab fare home – politely say no with reasons why not. Any woman worth anything will accept that she has to pay her way. Give yourselves a baseline of what is acceptable to you and never go below it – that way you can meet members of the opposite sex, have a nice time but know what you are willing to accept. Live a happy single life until you meet a man or woman who respects you enough to behave properly. I wish you all well.

  • I did not find this person funny at all. I guess I am one of the fortunate guys who has a great supportive wife. Sure we have had to work on things over the years but one rule we have always kept is not going to bed angry. She still laughs at my jokes even though she has heard the same one a hundred times. When I have traveled for business I always make a point to call no matter what time zone I am in, just to say how was your day. The foundation of our marriage is God. I feel fortunate to say we will have been married 40 years this November. There are still good women out there but the question is, are there still good men out there that know how to treat and love a women?

  • I hate to break it to you guys but there are women out there who like to do womanly things… they’re called Republican females…. if you find one she will cook for you and clean for you ….although as a single man can do that all myself and actually I’m a better cook than most of the women I date, it’s nice to find someone that while you’re at work will clean your apartment and cook you dinner when you get home …like I said just look for a Republican female and you probably shouldn’t have any issues…

  • FIRST OF ALL – SEX EVEN ONLY TWICE A WEEK IS GROUNDS FOR DIVORCE – AND IS THE REASON MEN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE WIFE. ALSO – WAS HER HUSBAND AWARE OF THE LIMITED AMOUNT OF SEX HE’D BE ABLE TO HAVE WITH THIS WOMAN BEFORE HE MARRIED HER? SOME MEN IN FACT DESIRE SEX MORE THAN TWICE A DAY – SO TWICE A WEEK IS LIKE BEING FED A MEAL TWICE A WEEK.

  • twice a week is starvation. my wife use to keep the house spotless, take the kid back n forth to school, make dinner, cut the grass, do the laundry and shopping, wash the cars and still have PLENTY of time to go to lunch with her friends every day, lay out and get a tan and all the other stuff she liked to do and make love at least every night. she said it was easy. needless to say my friends wives hated her and they were all out of shape. all i had to do was give her all the money i made. i had everything i needed so it was a great trade off.
