  • Huge NTA. I’m bi, if I married a woman and someone showed up in that dress I’d be horrified. A wedding is about the couple. It’s about what the couple wants, it’s about respecting the couple, and showing up in a spotlight dress that pokes fun at the couple (it may not be their sense of humour) is absolutely inappropriate.

  • As somebody who is part of the LGBTQ community showing support for “the gays” (and calling them that) by boiling down our identity and our struggles to a meme is tokenizing us into one specific type of person is offensive and homophobic because it doesn’t identify us as individual people rather than an idea of humor. Well a lot of people have the sense of humour we are so much more than that and this dress and her idea of support doesn’t really reflect that she feels that way. I see this as homophobic

  • does anyone else take issue with the fact that the dress in question says “I support gay RATS”? Like, I know the meme she’s referring to but those who are unfamiliar might assume she’s referring to the grooms as rats, which is incredibly insulting on top of being a completely inappropriate dress to wear to a wedding.

  • Im a lesbian, and I obviously can’t speak for gay couples everywhere but here’s my two cents: 1- i LOVE a good meme but the ‘gay rat’ meme kinda pisses me off because it’s one of those memes that like fetishizes/glorifies being gay and turns it into cutesy-uwu-baby crap. 2- Wearing something ‘gay themed’ to a gay wedding is just weird. The wedding isn’t a celebration of being gay, it’s a celebration of two people (who happen to be gay) being in love. If someone showed up to my wedding wearing that, theyre out. Gone. Goodbye. Leave. Our day isn’t a joke.

  • I definitely agree with what you said about language—this lady is using victimizing language to complain about dress codes, basically. Certain events have certain dress codes for certain reasons, like how at a wedding, you wear stuff that looks nice to show respect, but you don’t wear white because you don’t want to steal the spotlight. Look, if I was with someone who I had to remind that like, hey, this person’s wedding isn’t about YOU… lol I’d gtfo. Especially because he seems to like this schtick otherwise, he just wants her to show a little tact when it’s necessary. Hopefully he doesn’t ever have to attend a funeral with her… Also, I’m not gay, but I am in the community, and if I was getting married, it would be REALLY WEIRD to me if someone’s outfit was calling out specifically the fact that I was asexual or non-binary, even if it was in a respectful way. Like, this isn’t a Pride parade or a political rally, it’s my fucking wedding. I’m just trying to celebrate my relationship, just celebrate it with me like a normal person! Everyone in attendance would know about our identities—we don’t need to call attention to them.

  • Trust me, if she really supports their relationship she would have called them to ask if there’s anything she could do to help out in the wedding or at minimum ask if there’s a dress code/theme the couple would like on their wedding. It’s not hard to be a decent human being, she just finds it hard because her own personality isn’t allowing her to be a considerate person.

  • The “jewelry” comment is kinda gross. This guest is not it imo. I easily see him using the “bending language to victimize yourself” argument to gaslight someone. Also him saying its “interesting” how the lgbtq comunity took offense. How did he not see that coming? Using an unknown rat meme to show support for “the gays”?Its a wedding just like a het wedding, no need to make a whole outfit about people’s sexuality. Goes to show she didnt look at them as people beyond their orientation, and the guest(and everyone else in the world) should sense that.

  • I know the meme, I love the meme but I have a very strict list of whos allowed to call me a “gay rat” even in a joking way and the girlfriend of a guest IS NOT in that category. I wouldn’t let my mom call me that. Also why is the girlfriends “creative expression” more important than the comfort of the husbands? She’s assuming this argument exists in a bubble and that her intention is greater than any harm she causes. Break-up worthy for me if she won’t see why she’s wrong.

  • imo it depends on the vibe/sense of humor of the couple getting married. i’m gay and an art student, so i’d be thrilled if someone wore something like that to my wedding (_if_ the person wearing it was also queer, if they weren’t it’d feel tokenizing/performative/icky) but i have plenty of other artsy/queer friends who would take issue with it. also, side note: the comment about a wedding guest’s being ‘jewelry’… yeah, no. not okay. i get what the cohost is going for, but the language is super dehumanizing and disrespectful.

  • I have histrionic traits and I know people with histrionic personality disorder when I see them lol I get not wanting to look like other people and liking really weird fashion but “I support gay rats” is like saying “I only support gay rats” or saying they are like rats??? It’s a cute little meme but context matters

  • NTA. At your wedding, you can be as creative as you want. Same for daily life. But this isn’t her wedding, it’s his friends’. And if she’s so creative, she can easily find a way to show her style without insulting or diminishing the couple. He’s not asking her to turn off her personality, just showcase it in a different way. And, again, she’s creative. I’m sure she can find a way to do that & maybe even ask the couple what they’d be comfortable with her doing.

  • If the gf herself wants to run it by the grooms, AND they’re 100% on board with the idea, then by all means, she can wear the dress. A few people might actually love the idea. Otherwise, this is completely inappropriate for a wedding. You never make yourself intentionally the center of attention / take away from the people that are getting married. It’s incredibly disrespectful. I think she could maybe save this outfit for an occasion like pride, or maybe even at an event like Coachella, and not for this friend’s wedding.

  • a wedding is NOT the time to wear a statement piece, or to show off her creativity, personality or quirkiness – it is the time to celebrate the COUPLE. you need to be respectful of the two people who are exchanging vows. wear something nice, but “normal”, with some fun and funky accessories if you simply cannot go anywhere without feeling “special” – but be lowkey enough that the couple are not going to feel upstaged or otherwise like the attention is being drawn from them. it sounds like this girl has a deep need for attention and doesnt care if she will be offending and embarassing her boyfriend & the married couple. them being gay doesnt mean they want you to wear a “i support gays” rainbow sign to their wedding – you being there is showing support, and everyone else there is showing the same amount of support while also being dressed appropriately. its NOT hard.

  • okay if somebody who was actually lgbt liked that dress and thought it was funny and wore it to pride- that would be cool. but this situation? no. the wedding is not about her, or her style/creativity. even wearing a meme dress in general to a wedding id say would be a bit odd but this is very much like corporations going there is a rainbow here so all “the gays” must love it this person clearly doesn’t respect her partners opinion or their partners friends. she is also (like the guy said) putting her bf in the middle of it all basically. I aggree there is a gaslighting element here too. then the update? more gaslighting. he lied. its all a joke (weddings aren’t the place for jokes) also “too specific” so the GF found him… the details of this situation are what make it understandable- otherwise it would be too vague to understand.

  • I like being over the top… but your you-ness is not more important than anyone else. You are at a ceremony to celebrate and uplift the couple. Just do that. If you feel like that’s eating into your artist personal time, stay home and eat your own damn cake in whatever you want. And that meme is WILDLY inappropriate. Wtf
