I am 71 years old now,,and this movie still touches my heart!! I went to a parochial school. That had nuns!!! They taught me so much, that have made me who I am today ! Especially the Christian foundation of what, and why and who Jesus was!!.., 1980, I asked Jesus to come to live inside me, and forgive me of my sins…!!! I new the basics, but I never new to confess and declare them til then!!…The wait was worth it…and thankyou, sister’s if st.Joseph for preparing me, Amen and Amen!!!
this movie is a real gem, even to those who are non religious, it has a great story . i do not believe in god but i do enjoy some of these sorts of movies, i highly recommend (the shack 2017 ) real older movie gems ( the whisperers 1967,)( the caretaker 1963 ) . (turn the key softly 1953 ), all the last 3 movies are real gems, and older people will love these . if you own or work in an old peoples home, set up a home cinema room with a huge screen, trust me you will make them very happy . i wish i had a home cinema to go around old peoples homes and play them nostlaglic movies . they cant see or hear much on a small tv in a day room . I even struggled to see and hear a small tv when i was 30 ish working in old peoples homes, so how are old people meant to really enjoy a movie ? when theres so much going on in a sitting room, they put a tv there just for show, as the old folk cant hear it or see it, if i struggle at 30,to see it or hear it, they had no chance, i think there should be movies at least 3 times a week on a loud large screen for old folks and they should be able to vote for what movie they want to watch that eveing .
I will never understand why in days past they wouldn’t allow people to know what was wrong with them or that they were dying. I have been ill for nearly 40 years and to fight properly, one must have a positive attitude. Even though it has been hard to find out and know everything all along, it has been a true faith building and growth experience. I am so grateful.❤
It was during the filming of this picture that the Academy Awards for 1944 were held. That night Leo McCary and Bing Crosby won for “Going My Way” and Ingrid Bergman had won for “Gaslight”. The following morning on the set Bergman joked that she was happy to have won the night before because she would have been nervous without one, what with her director and co-star both having one of their own.
1 hr 13 . 31 : Glad they got plenty of music in.☺️🎼. Echoing my previous comment, Bing displays his ” signature ” style at this point : ” Don’t forget the ” dip “, that’s where the money is ! He looks relaxed, pleasant, ” natural “☺️. Some would say this film’s a bit ” corny”, but really, it’s just a nice, ” feel good ” movie. No blood, foul words, explosions, stress, conflicts, cruelty, shocks… I don’t like the modern films : so much nastiness, that they promote as ” Living On The Edge”😢. I’d rather have a lovely old film with messages about life, kindness, etc. So grateful to be able to see this one again.☺️ One of the best uses for the modern technologies. 🎼☺️🇬🇧💕🇺🇲🎵🎼🦉🇬🇧
I have been perusal this in bits during the last few days, finally finished it today. What a wonderful movie! How many times did I cry? Many times, wow…I love Bing Crosby, love his singing voice too it just fills my heart to listen to him. A beautiful, heartfelt movie🎄Thank you for posting this one!
This movie reminds me of my own elementary schooling at St. Elizabeth’s school in Pleasant Hills, PA. Sr. Virginia was the principal and Mother Superior of the convent, of the order of the Sisters of Mercy. What a graced time! I started first grade in 1960, so I enjoyed 5 years of the Tridentine holy Mass before the upheaval of the 60s.
It’s been said time and time again….!!!! If Hollywood would simply bring back the true meaning of Major motion pictures reflecting everyday life….!!! Just like real life every minute you don’t know what to expect….!!! As the human race we know,we adapt and we overcome….!!! And that is the glory of life…..!!!! Thank you for God for not giving us a roadmap….!!!! So Hollywood put back on your think cap and don’t forget your moral compass and let’s make some great films before it’s too late….!!!!
The first time I saw this movie was when I was in about 7th grade at a catholic school called St. Wenceslaus. The entire school was gathered into the gym and it was projected on the big screen. What a special event that was! It was fun perusal kids in the movie go to catholic school with the nuns since that is what we were doing in real life.
I haven’t watched this movie in years for one reason only . . the ending. I knew before I started perusal that the last 10 minutes or so would have me in tears. The scene praying in the church knowing that she was leaving St. Mary’s should have won Bergman the Oscar and not Joan Crawford for “Mildred Pierce” (watched it too numerous times and there is no comparison.) Some redemption is in order for Hollywood though as it did receive the Oscar for best picture. The plot, the singing, acting, the kid’s play and of course, Bing’s wonderful singing make this one of Hollywood’s best efforts.
We watch this to see the way we used to be as a society!! Morality, friendship, love, Faith, family. Yes, the influence of the word of God was prevalent in society and now is in the minority!! Our troubles are because of our turning our backs against God!! Our leaders have done a great disservice to the people of the USA!!
Bing is one of the desired men in Hollywood. Adored by women and the best friend of men because he was the epitome of men, strong, disciplined and tough when you need to be. He was gentle at also tough on everyone when it called for it. He two sons were stationed at Ft Ord while I was there and spent time driving me and other family members around while my dad was Lindsay’s company commander. Unfortunately they were caught up in fame like Elvis and died too young. My Dad was 69 dame age of his oldest before he became fatally ill. I once walked the golf course with Clint Eastwood during the Bing Crosby Pro Am in Carmel, CA back in ’77. They all were great golfers too.
Wow. Having to forgive a man for abandoning his wife and child for thirteen years… Wow. Of course the words of the sister superior echoed our ministers teaching to a T: You can’t make a valid decision until you’ve seen what else there is. One of the best things about hokey, sweet old movies is the insights you didn’t get before. (I’m sure glad nuns don’t have to wear wool in the summer anymore.)
Although this is a great and uplifting movie, it doesn’t depict real parochial schools back then. Nuns were known to be brutal back in the day. Those 2 boys would have gotten whooped hard for fighting in the school grounds. Little Patsy may not have gotten all this warmth and understanding for her low grades. Maybe some schools were like in this movie, I don’t know. Just not the ones I’ve heard of. My 69 year-old sister attended one.
The pastor has many qualities, only does he use them? Seldom. Not even at the very end… I wondered what is in this movie that makes me sad: is that the nun is almost lonely among the people, she has only has her great faith, her wisdom., her courage, and Ingrid Bergman’s talent and beauty – both divine 😇😇
This movie does not stand up with time. Everybody in the comments love this movie. But I can’t get past feeling good about a doctor who lies to one patient telling him he’s going to die, withholds information from another patient, and breaks doctor patient confidentiality. And the the priest celebrates bullying. At least the nun taught the kid to defend himself. And don’t get me started on the way the mom introduced her daughter to her dad with no explanation…. this is one time I’m glad to say they don’t write em like this anymore!
No such thing as “a touch of tuberculous.” TB was and still is a serious disease, and it is communicable. She could spread it anywhere she goes and should not be sent to “light duty” in an old folks home where she’ll expose very vulnerable people to a serious lung disease. Surely, the people who put this film together should have known that.
Well, I watched until the kids said the Pledge of Allegiance in a scene. They left out ….under God, after One Nation. I know a movie made in the forties DID NOT omit that part of the The Pledge of Allegiance. So either the movie company has, or this website did. Guess, I’ll be omitting this movie from my Christmas list from here on out. At marker 10:44
I tried to watch this based on the actors. It’s too much for me. I was raised Catholic and was 12 when a drunk priest approached me….I was never the same. My dad was addicted to Catholicism which totally screwed up his life. What a horrible religion. When I converted to Presbyterian my dad said the pastor was an imposter! What a good Catholic he was.
I was 12 years old when this premiered on network television in December 1977. My parents were out that evening on a social engagement and I took the liberty of perusal this made-for-TV movie on the big, Zenith, color TV in their bedroom. I loved it!! Over the last several decades, I wondered about this fine film, but could never find it — despite knowing its full name and cast! Suddenly, this morning I came across “It Happened One Christmas” and watched it for the first time in 46 years. Wow! What s wonderful, time capsule gift for a 58-year-old man to receive two weeks from Christmas! Thank you, Brian Morrison, for bringing back this incredible and treasured memory from my childhood. I thought this film was lost and forgotten to the ages, but I am very happy it is preserved forever. Marlo Thomas did a lovely job with this remake of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” God bless everyone who watches it! ❤️🇺🇸😊
I just watched a tribute to Marlo Thomas by the band,The Dave Clark five. I never knew she was married to Phil Donahue, phil you old dog. How lucky can a man be. One of the most beautiful women in the world. Not only outside but inside as well. But if anybody deserves her I think you do. She has a heart of her dad. Both of you have entertained us so much through the years. God bless this beautiful family.
It’s 30th of November 2023 and I just came across this lovely version of the old hollywood classic movie “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE ” starring James Stewart! I loved it ❤️ because you can see from a woman’s side how she handle it about everything! The conclusion of all the christmas movies old and new is one : Believe and pray and someone, something will always listen 👂 And most of all… LOVE ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you to anyone who posted it 😘
I saw this the night it premiered in 1977. Around Christmas time, of coarse. I was 16. It was an advertised special, made for tv with a respectable cast, so that meant it was going to be good. I have always liked this version. Why not? It’s another version to watch besides the original. Marlo Thomas obviously admires the story. I always thought she pulled it off just as good as James Stewart. I always liked her in her series “That Girl” too.
WOWWWWW!!! I cannot believe I finally found this movie. the last time I seen this was probably when it aired and I remember as a kid. I was so sad for her that nobody remembered her. I cannot wait to watch this now as an adult. Thank you for the upload this is truly a classic with such an amazing actress.
Thanks for the upload, I just remembered this show after having watched It’s a Wonderful Life. Hadn’t seen this one since the 70’s. I believe they showed it then a couple of years or so and I liked it. Like many others, had never seen the original before this one when I was a kid. I believe they didn’t start airing It’s a Wonderful Life until later in the 80’s. Funny, I also recall when I finally saw Wonderful Life in the 80’s, how similar this show was to it and realized it was a remake. I think this has held up fine in rewatching it.
What a lovely moVie i’ve evr watched!!!❣❣❣This is different feom all movies I watched. I learned a lot from this movie!!! From the bottom of my heart, I 💌💌💌 this movie!!! I can watch this movie over and over again!!! After perusal this movie, it’s look like, i’m a different person, a better version of myself. Nothing more important is embrace the present and things or people you have in your life because in one second, it will be all gone and you missed a beautiful present.🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍
this IS a beautiful movie… and up until a few days ago I never knew it existed… many stars in it’s cast… it comes off as a “Movie of the Week”.. from the 70’s… sadly….. as though as good as it is… it lacks a lot of the heart and the emotion.. of the veteran actors .. such as Jimmy Stewart.. Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore.. who were in the original 1947 Movie ” It’s a Wonderful Life”.. on which this movie was copied from… My advice to anyone who has ONLY seen this movie… is to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life”…..directed by Frank Capra… and compare it for yourself and see what YOU think…
Some people think the original is sexist due to the way Mary was depicted in Pottersville. Thus, it made sense to make a feminine version switching the roles of George and Mary. Marlo Thomas still looked like That Girl. The film took its title from another Frank Capra classic, It Happened One Night, and Citizen Kane himself played Potter.
All the magical moments in the original were when one actor ad libbed, surprising the rest and prompting a genuine reaction. Capra knew just when to catch his cast off guard to improve a take. All of those moments are recreated faithfully here, and every one of them falls flat, because the cast are expecting them, and it’s just another page of script to record. What on earth is Orson Welles doing in this?
Noticed an improvement over the original when re perusal this. I think in the original he dives in the water after the angel, always bothered me, thinking back probably because we were so strongly admonished in lifesaving class that a swimming rescue should be only used as a last resort. Her rescue from the shore would have met instructors approval very well. Correct me if I’m wrong on this.
So, out of nowhere, they threw in a couple kids (no more) as props for the closing scene, but where is the nanny that actually raised them while the strong independent career woman was busy keeping the building and loan afloat? In the Pottersville alternate universe hubby married the girl who otherwise played the nanny. She stayed home with apron on to raise 5 kids, and keep the home, Not to worry, Clara still earned her wings by not weighing down a fish with a bicycle. Mary got to enjoy traveling the world. She mailed a multitude of acquaintances innovative photos of her feet while lounging at the beach. She went on to become a boss babe on Wall Street and eventually retired to Vermont were she kept company with her cats and boxed wine.
I can barely find the words to comment on this most absurd conversation. This tv version is cute… it’s ok. I too, loved that girl. But, let’s be honest, it can’t come close the iconic original which has been a favorite for generations. The only people who know of this made for tv knock off are the people who watched it during its 1977 television airing… and maybe a few since then.
As a big fan of the original 1947 IAWL I wanted to watch this, just to see how they change the story And besides the fact that Marlo Thomas is a terrible actress this movie is terrible. It’s so bad no wonder nobody ever talks and I never heard of it except by seeing. YouTube that mentioned it. It’s an embarrassment. It looks like something that would’ve been made in 2023 to make the woman the big hero and male characters generally subservient and weak; which would’ve never happened in that time period. So the story just totally doesn’t work in any level. And Marko Thomas doesn’t pull this off – it’s an abomination /231228
I like Marlo adorable in That Girl. Marlo can’t act I never thought I’d ever say that about her but after struggling to get through this movie last night man I was embarrassed for her. An a list director may have pulled out a better performance from her idk 🤷🏻♀. She held back she didn’t give it her all. The role of Mary required a classically trained actress which Marlo isn’t IMO. Wells held back too. His performance was disappointing. The only positive was Cloris L.
