In “Tomboy Bride: A Woman’s Personal Account of Life in Mining Camps of the West,” Colorado historian Duane Smith provides a detailed account of Harriet Fish Backus’ adventurous life at the Tomboy Mine, high above Telluride, Colorado. Smith, who received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and began teaching at Fort Lewis College, has extensive research and writing experience in Colorado history, Civil War history, mining history, urban history, and baseball.
Backus, a pioneer woman, wrote a memoir about her life at the mine, which was published in 2003 by Western Reflections Publishing. The book is an addendum to a prior work, “Tomboy Bride,” which presents the first-hand account of a young pioneer woman’s life in a rough and tumble mining town of the Old West.
Harriet Fish Backus, who was the bride of assayer George, hopped on a train from Oakland, California, to the San Juan Mountains of Colorado at the age of twenty. Her life and those of her friends at the mine were a mix of past and present, providing readers with fascinating glimpses into an era long gone.
Smith’s book is an exciting trip into a wonderful vista, with a potpourri of Harriet Backus’ life and those of her friends at the mine. However, some critics argue that Smith’s commentary is repetitous and adds very little worthwhile new information.
In conclusion, “Tomboy Bride” offers a fascinating look into the life of Harriet Fish Backus and her friends at the Tomboy Mine, shedding light on the adventures and experiences of a young pioneer woman in the Old West.

First off: I know NOTHING about fashion. But omg do I hate pnina tornai dresses with a passion. Maybe because where I live, big sparkly stones like that are always seen as tacky. And that’s how I see the dresses. All the power to you if you love the dresses and can make them work, but I don’t understand them. They scream tacky to me.
Bride 2: I never would have guessed the first dress was a Vera Wang! I respect the bride and her family for following through (name recognition aside, dress 1 was .. a dress). Who the heck made the 2nd dress?? Interesting that the upper half was more or less the first dress. Still, I’m glad she had a fun reception. BIG NOTE: Her mother cried with the second dress. 🤗 (I don’t get the black shoes. 😬) LOVed the ‘whole thing. I (Irish) married my late husband 45 years ago. I ‘got my 40,’ God willing this bride matches and goes beyond. ❤️
I am pausing to comment: this is a beautiful bride. ‘You look like a Pnina girl’ is not a compliment. Does this mean Pnina would not be enhanced by her? Absolutely not. She would make Pnina look better. Would She look better in Pnina? Let’s see.. Ok: Re: bride 1: No. Just no. 🤦♀️ I HOPE this is not the way she went. 😑
The moment the consultant said “to me you look like a Pnina girl” I lost interest. Her budget being “unlimited” doesn’t mean they should put her in the most expensive dresses they have. She could be happy with a $2,000 dress and they’re so greedy because they probably get a commission from the purchase that it’s annoying and obvious.
