The Code of Canon Law does not explicitly state whether a Catholic can attend an invalid wedding of another. If a Catholic wishes to marry outside the Catholic Church without the necessary dispensation, the marriage is considered invalid and not recognized by the Church. This action places the person in a state of dispensation. While Catholics may attend all presumptively valid marriages of Catholics, non-Catholics, and non-Christians, they cannot marry outside a church in normal circumstances. Priests can request to marry a couple in a non-church wedding, as long as one is a confirmed Catholic and resides in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The dispensation for two Catholics to marry outside of a Catholic church may only be granted by the Vatican.
Al and Father Jeff discuss Catholic-style ceremonies, which are popular for those who want a Catholic feel but cannot attend the church. They emphasize the importance of Christian charity and friendship, but also the need for prudence in communicating reasons for not attending. For example, a friend might be in antagonism towards the Church or living her life in a state of antagonism.
Some couples prefer outdoor weddings, while others prefer indoor ceremonies due to logistical issues. The canonical form for celebrating a valid marriage in the Catholic Church requires the presence of a local bishop, priest, or deacon. However, an exception or dispensation can be made for a designated lay person to assist at a marriage without priests or deacons.
Catholics may face challenges in handling situations where family and friends choose to celebrate events outside of the faith, such as marriages outside of the faith or non-Catholic weddings. While the general norm is that Catholics should not attend weddings held outside of the Church or invalid due to other factors, they can obtain a dispensation from the diocesan bishop.
The Church does not explicitly forbid Catholics from attending presumptively invalid weddings, but they must use their own prudential judgment in making decisions. Two Catholics may not marry outside a church in normal circumstances, except in situations of danger of death.

Can a Catholic married outside the church receive communion?
A: Catholics who don’t follow the church’s marriage rules can’t receive Communion or other sacraments because they choose to be out of the Church. But there are many things to think about in interfaith marriages. So, your sons faith in the church is not lost because of his relationship. Catholics must be married in a Catholic ceremony. This is called marrying according to canonical form. It means that a Catholic must be married by a Catholic priest or deacon with two witnesses. If you were baptized Catholic, you are bound by this obligation. If a person was baptized Catholic as an infant but later left the Catholic Church, they would still be considered bound to canonical form. Can a Catholic attend a non-Catholic service?
“Required”? You mean “not allowed,” right? A Catholic may not worship at non-Catholic churches. This is against the First Commandment. This is different from an ecumenical prayer service. Every Catholic must go to Mass every Sunday and on holy days. Catholics don’t have to go to non-Catholic services. Visits are voluntary and must not cause scandal. Vatican II’s Directory on Ecumenism allows some participation at such services in common responses or hymns that are not in variance with the Catholic faith.

Can Catholics attend a wedding outside the church?
Catholics shouldn’t attend weddings outside the Church or weddings where one or both spouses have been married before and don’t have a decree of nullity. Attending a wedding shows you’re happy about the union. But in some cases, Catholics cannot celebrate. They shouldn’t attend. This could confuse others and make them think the wedding is okay when it’s not. Sometimes, it’s better to go to a wedding even if it might hurt family relationships. The goal is to witness to the Catholic faith and help fallen-away Catholics return to the sacraments. One may decide to attend, but explain later why the marriage needs to be validated. While it is not usually a good idea to attend, Catholics can decide what is best for them. Your situation is different. Your sister-in-law needs your wife’s help. Your wife’s presence may be necessary for charity and medical reasons. You made the right decision.
Judgment and natural disasters. Question: Abraham asked God to save Sodom even if there were only 10 good people there. Sodom was destroyed, so there were less than 10 good people there. What about areas destroyed by earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.? They often happen in poor countries. Does God allow the poor to suffer? I have trouble seeing a just and merciful God then.

In this clip, Fr. Gregory Pine discusses the complications of attending or supporting the wedding or a lapsed Catholic, or of …
Excellent Father! I am blessed I never struggled with my daughters getting married Catholic because it was Never an option, I told them “IF they didn’t get married Catholic I would not pay for, or attend their Wedding” I held to that and will hold to that for my son also. I only wish I had been more forceful in the spouses being Catholic if I had it to do again I would have said that also. But we can work on the part of the son in law not being Catholic and pray for it too. May God bless and Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Joseph, St. Michael and St. Raphael guide and protect us in the days ahead! Viva Cristo Rey!
Thank you so much for this! It is so sad that people do not understand what the Holy Church is and what the Sacraments are. I lived so much of my life outside the Holy Church and only became Christian in the year 2000. Now I still get teary when I receive the Holy Eucharist. These are difficult days. Going to weddings outside the faith is difficult indeed. Sad also are unbaptised children.
It is also difficult because so many people are returning to catholic faith. I myself am going through this. It is not somenthing to hard because my mom is very soft and easy goind person, but she is a protestant and my father is “non denominational christian” (which means nothing). But I pray for them, thou I dont pray enough. I feel so weak sometimes and I just dont wanna pray sometimes. God help me
Before I knew Catholic teaching on this, the nicest wedding I’d ever been to was a Catholic marrying a Protestant in a public garden. After I learned the Church’s teaching, I asked the Catholic if the marriage had been blessed by the Church, and the answer was, “No, it doesn’t have to be. My priest told me we’re married and don’t need to do anything else. If my (spouse) offers to have the marriage blessed in the Church, that’s fine, but it’s not necessary.” I’m not sure what the priest’s counsel really was — people often hear what they want to hear, and tbh many priests are not skilled in presenting authentic Catholic teaching without hesitation, so they take time to consider their words, which ends up just confusing the parishioner by conveying the message that everything is copacetic. I just wish I had known of this all along. 3 Hail Marys for Fr. Becker
My Orthodox grandmother married a bloke for immigration puposes. She looked around for a better deal, dumped him after she got what she wanted and remarried a better deal in the Orthodox Church. They religiously attended and fasted and prayed. Decades later, after she died, her second “husband” voiced his regret on marrying her.
I am gonna leave this here for those wondering if he or she can or cannot attend a certain wedding. I am just a layman (not a professional in these matters) and assume this list is correct (do note that I do not claim to agree with the “advice” section of the article, however, particularly with reference to mental reservation): catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/to-attend-or-not-to-attend
I´ve heard a teaching of a priest here that the Church considers a matrimony validy, depending on some circustances, even if it is not in the Church, with protestants. And this priest is not a liberal or anything like that. He is a really good priest. I can try to write what he said about it in english (thou is not my native laguage), but now I am a bit confused.
What about protestants who marry each other in their own church? I thought their marriages were at least valid, if not licit. This is because there is no priest required for the sacrament of marriage (as with baptism also), any Christian can perform it, and the bride and groom confer the sacrament on each other. Can someone address this? Would it be sinful for a Catholic to attend such a wedding? We DO acknowledge them as married, do we not? And are Catholics to even acknowledge OTHER weddings that are NOT valid, like marriages following “divorce”, and same-sex “marriages”?
