What is the oldest haunted movie?

In the 19th century, the word “horror” was used as a general term, but rarely. In early cinema, trick films were sometimes called different things. Some companies called their films fantastic, mythical, or mysterious. Others used the word weird. Newman said that Georges Méliès’s Le Manoir du diable was the first horror film. It features demons, ghosts, witches, a skeleton, and a haunted castle that turns into the devil. There is no story, just trick shots and vaudeville acts. Méliès made over five hundred films between 1886 and 1914. They were about history, religion, drama, literature, and fake news. In the early 20th century, films were made quickly and often remade. Poe’s work was often adapted in France, including Le Puits de la Lune and America. Other famous horror characters made their film debut in the era, including Frankenstein’s monster. Many other novels were adapted around the world, including Denmark, Russia, Germany, and Hungary. The most adapted horror story was Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It was adapted several times, including in 1908. This was followed by several versions, including a British version (The Duality of Man, 1910), a Danish production (Den skæbnesvangre Opfindelse, 1910), and another American film (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1912). In 1920, three versions were made: J. Charles Haydon’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, John S. Robertson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and F. W. Murnau’s Der Januskopf.

Only a few actors and directors specialized in the genre. These included Paul Wegener, who played Balduin in The Student of Prague. It is a story about a deal with the Devil and a deadly doppelganger. Wegener often worked on stories about the Jewish folktale character Golem. These included Der Golem, a sequel that also was a parody; The Golem and the Dancing Girl, a prequel; and The Golem: How He Came into the World. The German film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was described by Newman as having breakout performances by actors Werner Krauss and Conrad Veidt. Veidt also worked in Der Graf von Cagliostro, The Hands of Orlac, and The Student of Prague and Waxworks. Krauss played the Devil and Jack the Ripper in these films. Murnau made an adaptation of Dracula with Nosferatu. Newman said this adaptation is the only one to focus on horror. The characters and the thin body make the film a horror movie. It’s even more of a horror movie than Caligari.Hollywood didn’t develop horror film stars, but actor and make-up artist Lon Chaney often played monsters in films like A Blind Bargain, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Phantom of the Opera, and London After Midnight. Chaney was not a horror film star. He was mostly known for melodramas he made with director Tod Browning. One was The Unknown, where he plays a murderer. Lon Chaney’s films were sometimes called horror films, like The Unknown and West of Zanzibar. The term was used in different ways, like in Evening Star, which said that horror films might be banned from transportation. This was because of a bill by US Senator Thomas Gore that would have banned films showing ex-convicts, bandits, train robbers, or other outlaws. In 1928, the Warren Tribune of Pennsylvania compared the film Something Always Happens to The Bat and The Wizard and other similar films in an article titled Horror Film Thrills Audience at Columbia. Rhodes noted that different descriptions were used for these films, but they were most commonly called mystery films.

  • I was desperate for ANYTHING to watch tonight and decided to give this a go, even though I didn’t think I’d watch past 10 minutes. How pleasantly surprised am I? What a great collection of light-hearted, yet spooky tales fraught with nostalgia and fun! Definitely made my night a lot better! Also: BOB IS THE MAN!

  • Hubby and I just watched this and we both loved it. Each of the stories were well thought out, we loved the homage to M R James and I adored the costumes (especially Francesca’s headband, and her make-up too in “The Contraption” segment.) We both loved Bob the ghost who was adorable and reminded us both a little of Rent-a-ghost, a much loved tv series from our childhood. Thank you so much for sharing, we both really enjoyed this movie. Best wishes and hugs from the west coast of Scotland x

  • This film is basically a rehash of those ‘Hammer House of Horror’ films, wherein a number of short stories are woven together via a tenuous thread. Although the stories here are lighter, and even somewhat ‘tongue-in-cheek’ compared to those old classics, the film is nevertheless very enjoyable and not without charm. Nice upload, thanks. (Edit) The story set in 1968 is much more ‘Rent-A-Ghost’ than ‘Hammer House’. 😂 Yes, showing my age there…

  • I picked this movie because I hoped, even if it is a free horror movie on YouTube, there has to be at least 1 short in this anthology that I will enjoy. It turns out the whole thing is good from start to finish, both as a cohesive collection and as each individual story. It was nostalgic, funny, quirky, subtle, cheeky, tense, and enjoyable. I appreciate that it fulfilled my need for a scary movie without subjecting me to cheap jump scares, overly-edgy characters, or gratuitous violence. A++ movie!

  • The acting was quite good throughout by many of these English actors. The best episode for me was the old sophisticated former soldier going to the hotel to rendezvous with his wife. Touching, poignant, creepy but sad. The film takes a page from the ideas based on the 50s series One Step Beyond (all episodes based on true events) & the 60s series Twilight Zone (fiction) — yet, none (except for the soldier & his wife) come close to those tales of mystery. These were a bit predictable. The most impressive thing was the opening credits — great graphics & music. The film was entertaining & well-made.

  • There is one type of film the British do well the horror anthology, and this one keeps the tradition going. Like all anthologies some stories are better than others and will be up to peoples own perception,I enjoyed all the tales and preferred some more than others. It was well acted and filmed thanks for posting.

  • You People at MC 🤗 are wonderful, I thought that this Movie would be a horrible slasher type Movie, but I got a big surprise as this Movie is a Classy, Classic Horror Movie and I Love ❣️ the beautiful Hotel and that Gorgeous couple celebrating their wedding of 40 years is so special and I hope that I look like that Spectacular Woman at her age, she carried the Gorgeous dress off so beautifully. I throughly enjoyed this Movie and sorry Kids I would give this one a miss unless You adore a Bygone Era.

  • That was surprisingly good! Good acting & delightful scripts The story about the horror writer in the hotel, writing his best book reminds me very much of one of my favourite stories From the master of chilling tales M. R. James’s, The Mezzotint Even though ive read it countless times & seen it played out on the stage & screen, it still scares me. Theres something unsettling & uncomfortable in the Mezzotint & the writers tale in this anthology is very much like it. Very good indeed! Id give it a plus 8 out of 10! Not at all disappointing & with a macarbe humour too! Regards 🇬🇧👧

  • This may sound silly, but I have to say I love her headband in the Ghost Society story. I sometimes appreciate the costumes & settings as much as the stories in movies, certain things just set up an such an interesting atmosphere that makes it more enjoyable to me. I’ve even liked some movies where the story wasn’t coherent, written well, or left out too much just because the music, setting design, etc. was so good it wasn’t a waste of time to watch it? 😉

  • Now the picture i posted is not the same hotel in the movie however it is a famous old haunted hotel in Florida people travel from far distances to stay in it for that reason. Others stay in it unaware of the haunted history only to find out the hard way! Some people stay in the hotel and later leave happly without any report of ghosts or any hauntings. Keep in mind however in this country there are a number of haunted hotels not only found in Florida but in many states and some of them are very large and well known! I stayed in a hotel in NC which had a history of hauntings and i slept like a baby and was right at home there were no reports of strange events or ghostly sights and the old hotel was huge full of long hallways and very very old its actually where i had my honeymoon that was a marvelous experience!

  • The script for 40 Years written by Thomas Winward far surpassed the rest, excellent acting by Hugh Frasier and Judith Sharp, no surprise there. Room 27B OK. Worst like a last minute tack on Devil Inside. Theme was good but came across as quite amateurish in parts, despite the influences from classic authors and some established actors. Still it was enjoyable. Thanks for the upload.

  • Houses… are alive. This is something we know. News from our nerve endings. \r If we’re quiet, if we listen, we can hear houses breath. Sometimes, in the depth of the night, you can even hear them groan. \r It’s as if they were having bad dreams. A good house cradles and comforts, a bad one fills us with instinctive unease. \r Bad houses hate our warmth and our human-ness. \r That blind hate of our humanity is what we mean when we use the word “haunted”. – Dr. Joyce Reardon, Rose Red Stand back! Protect yourselves! Who knows what evil lurks behind the hallowed walls in the house of the haunted! – Ed, Ed, Edd n Eddy – Honor Thy Ed\r Either we take our chances with the ghosts or become ghosts ourselves. – Robin of Locksley, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves You see, nobody ever goes in… and nobody ever comes out. – The Tinker, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

  • I thought this was going to be quite a good movie for Halloween. How wrong I was. I stuck with it until 1924 but had already come to the conclusion that the script must have come from Rentaflop and the actors from the Hireaham agency. I couldn’t take any more. I was dying of boredom. This film will leave a haunting memory.

  • I can’t be scared, by a movie or book, not since the Exorcist, the mutual of ALL sick scary horror flicks. Not since Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Wolfman, had I been that spooked. I’m an adult, real life is scarier, the only really well done . movies I’ve seen in the last 20 years are The Conjuring and Insidious
