Can I Have A Catholic Wedding Outdoors?

The Catholic Church discourages outdoor weddings as they are not dedicated, sacred, or consecrated spaces. However, the Church allows couples to tie the knot outside of a church, but only in two cities. The canonical form for celebrating a valid marriage in the Catholic Church requires the presence of the local bishop, priest, or deacon (Code of Canon Law, can. 1108).

Catholics need to get permission before they can wed non-Catholics, and to receive dispensation to marry a non-Catholic, the Catholic party must affirm their faith in Jesus and intend to continue living that faith in the Catholic Church. According to Canon law, Catholic weddings should take place in a parish, but may be celebrated elsewhere with permission from the bishop or his delegate.

The new policy, implemented in June 2015, allows a wedding to take place outdoors, but the “nature of the place needs to be consistent with a religious celebration.” When a Catholic marries someone who is not Catholic, the Catholic party may request permission from the local bishop to celebrate the wedding at the other person’s place of worship.

Church law states that a wedding may be held in some other suitable place besides a Catholic church, but it is technically possible that the local bishop might allow it.
