The most important thing about wedding outfits for guests is not to upstage the bride and groom. However, there are few instances where wearing jeans to a wedding is generally not acceptable. Jeans are considered casual attire and may not be appropriate for a formal or semi-formal event like a wedding.
When choosing what to wear over a dress to a wedding, it is essential to follow certain rules. The most important rule is to make sure your jeans look polished and dressy. Jeans should not be worn to a casual wedding as they usually lead to underdressing. Dark chinos, dress pants, or a casual 2-piece suit would be a much safer option.
Another option is to pair a jean jacket with a dress for a bohemian look or a fitted dress for an edge to a classic outfit. A black jean jacket can be a chic statement when worn with a little black dress or paired with some more casual gray pants.
While a jean jacket may be a casual and trendy choice for everyday wear, it is not typically considered appropriate attire for a wedding. Weddings are usually formal or semi-formal events, where guests are expected to dress up. Opt for more formal options like a blazer, suit, or dress shirt and trousers.
In summary, while jeans may be a casual and trendy choice for everyday wear, they are generally not considered appropriate for a wedding. Instead, guests should choose more formal options such as a blazer, suit, or dress shirt and trousers.

I love the looks that can be created with a denim jacket, and I have one. I only wear it maybe once or twice a year. It’s too heavy for the warm months in Alabama, and for me, not warm enough during our usually rainy winters and springs. I think my metabolism is the problem, not the jacket. I’m older now, 65, and I have fibromyalgia which I believe affects how my body now reacts to hot and cool/cold weather. But I have still loved seeing this. Thanks from your geographical neighbor.

Loved this article – I have two jean jackets (light wash and white) and never thought of paring them with dresses – but I sure will now. My favorite thing about your website is learning new ways to pair clothes I already own. Your flair with fashion is also reflected in your home decor – comfortably chic. ❤
I’ve always loved short tailored jackets; I think they’re a lifesaver when you want to look casual but not too-casual, if you know what I mean. Having denim jackets in different colors is a great idea. Love it! Definitely a more updated look. I’ve been hanging on to my cardigans… but now, the look is too conservative for me. Thank you I needed that!! I’m going to Goodwill to make a donation. 😄
Good morning Jacqueline, I have two jean jackets hanging in my closet. I like to throw one on over a casual dress if I’m running errands, I think that it just ads a nice touch. Thanks for sharing your tips! Happy Canada Day weekend, hope you enjoy the summer heat! It’s supposed to be very hot and humid. xo Cathy
Oh Thank you for this article. There are some people that say women over 50 SHOULD NOT WEAR JEAN JACKETS. I’m a plus size woman and I love my jeans I wear them very fitted and my tops also fitted now I HATE to wear a bulky sweater when it gets chilly so I’ll be buying a jean jacket very soon. Thank you again for this article. Wow
Jean jackets have been a staple in my wardrobe for years-maybe because I am Canadian! I have a mid blue denim, a white, a red, and my newest addition, a light blue with 1950’s motif painted on the back. I’m 60 years old so age appropriateness is always at the back of my mind now when I wear them. I agree with all your tips and would say the guiding principle is to balance the ‘hip’ jacket by pairing it with more sophisticated peices.
I love pairing my mid-blue, fitted, traditional jean jacket with dressier items, to make them more wearable for everyday street style. I have a silk floral (small flowers, on a black background) maxi dress with spaghetti straps that is a little more bare than I prefer, as well as too dressy for most occasions; the denim jacket tones it down and enables me to enjoy it more often. Another combination often overlooked is a blue denim jacket paired with black jeans — worn with a black turtleneck, very chic!
thank you for the great article. Just food for thought, I’m in a large metro area, always in public and corp environment. The “elvis” or popped collar I think ages us. It’s very last decade, makes us (of a certain age who won’t let go of this) look a bit in a time warp. we can all do whatever we want!!!! But as I look around, and I have looked, at least around the Chicago area, popped collars stick out like a soar thumb and the only time I do see one is someone my age. Only food for thought and another perspective. Cheers, Lulu
🥴Canadian Tuxedo?🤔…. Fashion is subjective! Matching is a matter of perspective and personal preference. A monochromatic and or coordinating outfit (especially considering body type) will elongate the body to give the illusion of a leaner silhouette. More so, what works for one person might not work for the next. You might want to suggest rather than condemn someone’s fashion choices, considering this post is for women 50+.
