When one partner is in therapy?

Help. Your partner may need your support during therapy. Ask how they feel about therapy, help with homework, or go to therapy meetings if asked.

The key is to be there for your partner, without prying into their therapy or making it about you. Ask how therapy is going, not about details. If you want to know more, it might help to set boundaries at the start of therapy.

  • My ex tried to take me to his therapist twice. The first one excused reproductive abuse so I left- and, of course, the narc used that as approval for the abuse from the outside source. The second one told my narc that he wasn’t allowed to own other people and he needed to let me leave/pay for me to leave. I still have had people trying to force me to “work with him” or “talk to him” rather than pursue him directly over other issues. I won’t. I won’t even attend meetings in the same room with him.

  • During my first marriage while going to couples therapy the therapist suggested that we go on a second honeymoon like holiday without our pre-teen children. During our ensuing agreed upon honeymoon “holiday” while I was fast asleep snoring away he took a sliver of countertop material off of the countertop in our second hand camper and dropped into one of my nostrils in my turned up nose whereupon I then had to insist on a trip to the local emergency department in hopes that it could be flushed out my sinuses when blowing my nose didn’t get it out first. Instead of the physician being there for me as a victim of domestic violence he said to both of us, “What kind of sick game were the 2 of you playing?” At the time police forces were not being required to lay any charges for domestic violence. Instead it was up to the victim of domestic violence to lay the charges themselves. Most victims of domestic violence at the time in the last century realized that if they did lay the charges for domestic violence themselves that would only put both them and their children too more at risk.

  • I know there are articles such as this with NPDs manipulating therapists. But there are another group with NPD who absolutely refuse therapy and who look down on therapists. They say things like “they are not real doctors.” These NPDs will NEVER go to therapy. I have heard from therapists that many with NPD absolutely refuse to attend any type of therapy session. Instead they just tell people is wrong with you and see a doctor to get medicated. Questions about families, relationships, marriages, kids, etc, upset the narcissist to the core as he/she can’t control the narrative anymore.
