I can attest. I’ve been drinking hard and heavy for nearly 10 years. But, I’ve been sober for 2 months now. By 17 years old, I had become an alcoholic. By the time I was 18 I was drinking almost a case of beer a day. So that’s anywhere between 12 to 18 beers a day. So I have easily drank more than 30,000 beers in the last 8 years. (I mean you figure at LEAST 12 beers a day, at LEAST 5 days a week, 4 weeks every month for 12 months, multiply that 8 for years, and you get at LEAST 23,040 beers over the span of 8 years and that is on the LOW end considering I rarely got a 12 pack. I almost ALWAYS bought a 15 or an 18 pack of beer.) And that is not counting all the bottles of spirits and liquor I’ve drank on top of it. I have even drank during work hours before. And drinking certainly does effect your life in major ways. And this is not just a matter of physical health. My father also drank a lot when he was young. I believe it had a lot to do with why cheated on my mother. And because of his infidelity, my father and mother have not been together since I was only a year old. These things can effect your life big time. Alcohol has done so much damage to me and my life. I’d say that every time I talk about it, I always tell people not to do it and that it’s not worth it. And it isn’t. Being 2 months sober, my head is more clear, my joints don’t ache and hurt like they did, I can get out of bed faster because I’m more rested after I sleep, etc. I have less anxiety as well. I mean I still have it, but not nearly as bad as I experienced it drinking.
I could write a book on the things I’ve seen when the ‘Christian’ engages or refuses to repent of the drinking lifestyle. It always tears me up inside when I see my brothers & sisters fall into this bondage. I was involved in a church 25 yrs ago that was lead by a strong pastor. He preached on the dangers of drinking. 1 by 1, the people started leaving the church until finally the body dissipated. I’ve been looking a lot of those people up recently to see if they still follow Christ. It’s not hard to find them, most of them are at the bars at night. When I asked 1 gentleman, ‘Are you still following Jesus?’ He answered, ‘I’m so far from God, it’s ridiculous!’ So I shared the message of salvation w/ him & told him, ‘No. You’re only 1 prayer away from God, his mercy & grace can deliver you from this lifestyle, but it’s gonna be a decision that YOU have to make. God loves you, do you want to be a fan of Jesus or do you want to be a follower? You know the truth, but you have to put actions to your words in order to escape this lifestyle that binds you.’ He cried & said, I’ll think about it.’ Just seeing a lost brother in that state of mind is heart breaking.

Wow, I was just having this conversation with my family yesterday. I personally don’t drink because I don’t see the point in it …. very very occasionally I will have a single glass of wine at a special occasion. Something my pastor said that stood out to me was that God can call you anytime,& it reminded me of a friend I have who was drinking with her husband and she got a call early evening asking if she could pray for a friend at a hospital. She wasn’t super drunk but was a bit tipsy so I mean who would go tipsy to a hospital to pray? Regardless we know that looks bad…the person died that night. I grew up with a mom who was an alcoholic and other family members, especially my dad’s side who were alcoholics and I have over the years used to attend bars and parties and got drunk because I thought it was fun and I struggled with being an outcast, a shy introvert who never fit in so drinking helped bring out out this side of me that was fun, loud and happy and enjoyed being around people I then realized that it only made me loose and saying and doing things I wouldn’t normally do, it wasn’t real I felt horrible the next day Not necessarily a hangover just if I remembered how I acted like an idiot I realized much later that you don’t need alcohol to have a good time God woke me up! Alcohol isn’t my problem. I do drink occasionally to ease my chronic pain, but rarely do I get drunk. Those days are long past me now. My major challenges appear to be dark thoughts, crude words escaping my mouth, sexual perversion, and uncleanliness. I’m working to overcome these, but it’s not easy.
God said, “do not look at wine” in proverbs and calls us to grow in being more and more sober all over the New Testament… Gee, I wonder if I should drink lol (besides medicine of course, but even then Paul had to specifically write that to Timothy because Christians did not drink for fun since the very beginning).
In his first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 6, verse 12, Paul states: “I have the freedom to do anything, but not everything is helpful; I have the freedom to do anything, but I won’t be controlled by anything.” Other scripture versions will vary on word selection but not on main point. Wine gladdens the heart. Wine in the right quantity is beneficial to a person’s health. When wines control the person, then, it can have lethal results.

I’ve always said, it’s not the alcohol that’s a sin, it’s where your heart is when you drink. If you drink to get drunk then it’s a sin. It’s a heart condition. In saying that, if alcohol condemns you, don’t drink. It’s the same as cake. A little is ok, to much to often is bad. We can make anything a sin. Food, wine, whiskey, looking at the opposite sex wrong and so on. Paul said to put off the appearance of sin. Being alone with your neighbors wife. We have to be the light of the world.

As it is written in 1 Chorinthians 6:19-20 and in 1 Timothy 3:9-10 that our body belongs to God’s glorification and we need to keep ourselves in modest apparel. I’m at the age where I can drink without a problem ~ and to this day I think there’s nothing cool about alcohol, drugs, or anything of that category. I’ve tasted alcohol, and I’m just glad I didn’t like it one bit. It’s a shame that our society is the biggest influence to what we do nowadays. One of the fruits of the Spirit is self control. Being drunk violates that. It’s important that if you do drink, you are very conscious of your state of mind and if you feel you are getting close to losing that control to stop. Also, do not judge those who chose not to drink, just as those who don’t shouldn’t judge those who do. It really is on an individual basis. For one person, one shot turns into 20 very rapidly, another person on the other hand knows when to stop. For some people this is a point of contention and so if there is someone that believes it is a sin, I chose not to drink in front of them because the relationship is more important than the argument of whether it is or isn’t a sin. Paul uses the example of eating meat in Romans 14:15 but the same principal applies here I think. At the end of the day, all commands hinge on 1) loving God and 2) loving your neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40). Those two are the main point of any given command. Really, every action, reaction and decision should go back to those two commandments.
Daniel, LUKE 5:39 makes clear distinction between “old wine & new.” Original scriptural writing in Hebrew, Aramaic, & Greek also made this distinction. While I do trust the Bible to describe something that is true, it is also true that there have been numerous changes, omissions, mistranslation & mistransliteration. Daniel the point is that if you study this issue as deeply as it is possible, and then pray on it. . .you’ll come to clear understanding that we are Not to partake of “old wine” or imbibe with other spirits ever. We are exhorted to partake of the “new wine,” which is of course unfermented containing no alcohol. Please study & pray about this Brother. JOHN 8:32

I have always enjoyed your articles but I do not agree with drinking. I understand and respect what the Bible says, but it also says that your body is a temple and you are not to put any type of poison into it. Again, I liked your article but it’s a dangerous message. Yes, you did cover it all but I encourage everyone to never drink. Why drink a little bit of wine when that little bit could someday become a lot. I grew up and am still living with a muslim dad. I love him of course and he loves me too, but he is emotionally insecure and I know that if I verbally pray to god and ask jesus for forgiveness, that my dad who will hear it, will surely become violent and probably like kill me. From young age he violently forbid us to become christian and so we have lived all these years lying to him and acting as if we are muslims. I know that I have to verbally ask jesus for forgiveness in order to be saved, but if I like die or something, then how will I be able to spread the gospel whatsoever? God has promised my truly reborn christian mother that my dad will become a christian. Do you think that is has to do something with the issues I have? I met a woman about 4 years ago, and I learned a lot by her… I’m now 22 years old and I lost her in a car accident 6 weeks ago, I loved her so much, she did drink and had alcohol, but before I did not know these things, I really hope and wish I could see her one day again… we should not judge but im worried I might not see her ever again… this is really bad, i dont know what to do… i feel like giving up my life but i know its not the right thing to do

I think this is very important to talk about this. Its a difference between drinking to point of getting more social and everything is funny than drinking to the point of puking everywhere and getting agressive. for me if i want to get a little buzz i just take 4 glasses of wine maybe a shot or two and thats it. I appreciate the lovely way you approached this misunderstood issue. My brother after long yrs of interpersonal struggles not just with alcohol but with his yrs in the military, joined a very fascist group while a prison officer then on to governmental assignments. Many of these issues lead to drinking he was not mean & hateful but you could tell he was coming unglued for many things did not comform to his real heart beliefs. I could see he was fighting inside but it was with the Lord and the Lord had a grip on him yet allowed him to fall until he would hear. “Sounds so familiar doesn’t” the Bible has so many illustrations of this issue they are not uncommon to any of us. One day he finally stop fighting and started to seek the Lord out ( he grew up in Bible family) and knew but his ego would not let him go. He turned his life completely upside down he took the Lord’s challenge study anytime he could after 7 yrs he started Bible College, then taught Vacation Bible School then 9 yrs before his death from a brain tumor became a Reverend/ Pastor. Where does Alcohol play a role for it was me who sought him out as a role model he learned and very lovely taught me he would say, ” Little Sister a drink is ok but drinking is not there is a difference ” for it meant the world to me then he put the icing on the cake by saying, ” Don’t stumble before your brothern & what if the Lord returns ” it got me to think about alot of things i needed to be more aware of, my own personal responsibility to the,”Lord, my family & my character “.
I was never an “alcoholic” but all drinking ever did for me was make me act like a fool, avoid responsibilities, deal properly with things and get me into trouble, so for me it is a Sin, as I know it’s not for me, and I quit many years ago. I believe if you do things which aren’t bad for others, but are bad for you, you’re being self destructive, and that is a Sin – just because something is possible (or permitted) doesn’t mean it’s profitable. My real father was a BIG alcoholic, and I was told he died a horrible death (he was also a multi pack a day smoker) and I thank God for saving me from following the same paths.

Occasionally in my life while in the depths of despair and depression a couple of shots of scotch or gin provided instant relief and for a few hours I had forgotten my woes… A temporary solution, but somehow after sobering up I felt better despite the hangover. Thank you for this…i run across so many people that say they are Christians but do so much of what the world does, it makes the word ‘Christian’ a bit watered down. I am not perfect. i do like my moscato on occasion but i think the mixed drinks will be no longer. i want to be a better example and move forward in my relationship with God….
One of the best messages I heard early on in the Lord was about drinking and all the stuff that goes along with it, I just was pretty powerful back then I still hear that message in my head,, Yeah it isn’t bad to drink wine but my brother my dad used to let them take a little sip of wine he became an alcoholic both my brothers so I never thought it was a big deal either but you don’t know who it’s going to destroy they might’ve found it anyways but you see what I’m saying they’re not told not to do it most parents in America let their kids have sips of beer that I’ve been around true say that for years I was never approved even though really serve the Lord just I don’t know it wasn’t taken serious enough it just wasn’t the kidney down to never touch the stuff I wish I would’ve been more Voice stress about it my niece is in alcoholic not good not good not good not a good idea yeah I know they take it from medicine especially during the war yeah I get that we’re not talking about that
I have been smoking for the past 20 years n have tried to stop many many times but always failed. I always had withdrawal symptoms and will eventually fall back into the addiction. With Christ by my side now, i have completely kicked out the habit without any withdrawal symptoms and urges to go smoke anymore. Praise the Lord.
I believe the same way with what I’ve read in the Bible! Getting drunk is a sin but drinking wine with a dinner and not getting drunk isn’t a sin. But some people don’t have self control and should just not drink at all. Also we want to be seperate from the world and really shouldn’t look like the world by drinking
I have been going to Catholic Church for 40 years, and I did catholic studies at school for 5 years. I was never warned about alcohol and drunkenness. This is really worrying, as I trust in the Church and Christianity but the message of dangers in alcohol are weak or non-existent!!! There are christian Faith’s that encourage people to abstain from alcohol, this is the best approach and less confusing as out in society everything around you including friends, family, movies, sports events, birthdays, weddings, Christmas, holidays, university, work etc is telling you to drink lots of alcohol!!!
I understand why drinking is a sin because it alters your thoughts and feelings but what about dipping tobacco or tobacco in general I want to get closer to God and a stronger Christian I’m just very curious about this because it has a strong hold on me thank you for all that you do with your articles !!
I’ve never seen so much judgement. No where it says you can’t drink and that you’re not following Christ if you smoke weed. I smoke weed everyday and keep my faith, pray in the morning and at night. Y’all really love speaking for god and thinking you’re better. This is why it took me such a long time to get to Christianity
