Can You Have A Church Wedding On A Sunday?

A couple can get married on a Sunday, subject to the availability of the parish and priest. There are only two days on which a wedding cannot be celebrated (Good Friday and Easter Saturday). Outside of those two days, the sacrament of marriage may be held on a Saturday evening or on a Sunday. A wedding scheduled on a Sunday must use the readings from the lectionary for that Sunday.

One of the biggest advantages of having a Sunday wedding is the cost savings. Many vendors and venues offer discounts for weddings held on a Sunday, which are practically forbidden on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. However, in danger of death or for another grave reason, a wedding outside of Mass could be validly held.

To ensure a valid marriage, couples must meet certain requirements, such as being baptized Catholic, having a registrar carry out or be present at the ceremony, and meeting the Order of Celebrating Matrimony. The Church of England teaches on the Sunday obligation in the Catechism and the Code of Canon Law.

Sundays and other Holy Days are not typically acceptable for weddings, but there are rare exceptions. Weddings may technically be scheduled on any day of the week, but some liturgical factors might influence a couples’ decision. A Sunday wedding in a church isn’t a bad idea unless the timing is good without any services or mass taking place on that day.
