Can You Resize A Men’S Wedding Band?

Men’s wedding rings can be resized to increase their size, but it is important to avoid making it a habit as frequent resizing can weaken the metal or compromise intricate details. The most common method is to add metal to the band’s circumference, which can be done by cutting out a piece of the band and soldering the ends back together. Thin bands, eternity bands, and other types of rings can be resized, but wood wedding bands can only be resized.

Resizing is common and can be done more often depending on the metal and precious stones on the shank of the ring. Professional jewelers have a wide range of options to complete the task affordably and safely. Rings can only be resized by jewelers by a maximum of two sizes up or down.

Tiffany & Co. offers resizing for select items, and resizing can be done using various methods, such as stretching, cutting and spreading, sizing assistants, and ring guards. Cobalt wedding rings can be resized, as they have higher resistance to scratching and are 100% hypoallergenic.

Men’s wedding bands are generally simpler in design and easier to resize, with the shank being cut out and soldered back together. To make a ring smaller, a jeweler can remove a small piece from the band, solder it back together, and clean it for a smooth finish. However, not all rings can be resized, and the cost depends on the metal and the work needed. Some metals, such as tungsten carbide, titanium, and stainless steel, cannot be resized. Traditional metals like platinum, gold, and sterling silver can typically be made larger or smaller by one or two sizes. Most rings can be resized by 0.5 to 1 for most materials, but it’s important to avoid damaging the structural integrity of the ring. Reducing the size of a wedding band can be done using a sizing assistant, which is composed of beads that can be fitted into the ring.

  • Hello Mr. Berry! I found this article very interesting. I just got married and have an Art Deco engraved platinum wedding band, not unlike the one shown in this article, only narrower (about 2mm). Do you think a good jeweler can use a stretching machine like you did at the end in order to slightly enlarge my ring without distorting the pattern? It is currently a size 4.5 US and I need a 4.75 / 5 US. Thank you!

  • Hi Andrew. I love your articles. How about sizing ‘up’ 1 size? I have a plain platinum band I need a little bigger. I can’t find any info on stretching Platinum. Do I need to anneal it for 1 size bigger? I have a good stretcher and have stretched 24 k without anneal, but I don’t know if PT is the same. :O

  • Hello Andrew! Can you take a carved gold wedding band (much like the platinum band you show here) and widen it 1/2 a size without damaging it? Have you already addressed this. Jewelers here want to sell me a new ring but I want to keep the one that I was married with on the proper finger. Thanks a lot. Bronwen
