Tulle skirts are a popular choice for special occasions, including weddings. They can be worn with various outfits, such as bodysuits, T-shirts, pajama-style tops, sweatshirts, or hoodies. To elevate the look, consider wearing a blazer, button-down, and a petticoat.
Tulle skirts can be paired with basic tops, shirts, and heels, making them suitable for both casual weekend wear and weddings. For a refined look, consider a velvet skirt for fall or winter weddings, while a minimalist maxi skirt with a thigh high slit and a basic crop top is a lovely ensemble to rock.
Accessories like belts, cropped leather jackets, denim jackets, or blazers can be added to the tulle skirt for a touch of elegance. However, it’s important not to wear a baggy shirt or blouse when wearing a tulle skirt, as they may overwhelm your figure. Cinch the skirt at the smallest part of your waist and avoid wearing anything too bridal.
Tulle skirts come in many styles, colors, and lengths, making them perfect for any occasion. They can be worn on a casual weekend, work, or even to a wedding. However, it’s essential not to wear anything too bridal, as it may attract attention away from the couple.
In winter, a tulle skirt works just as well with a knit sweater over a collared shirt, chunky loafers, and warm socks. Overall, tulle skirts are versatile and can be worn in various ways to suit any occasion.

Bringing a big group. “A bride should only bring two people when shopping for a wedding dress,” said Cristina DeMarco of Bridal Reflections in New York. Just a mum and a sister or best friend. 5 different opinions can make it harder to decide. Theresa Misso, a blogger, wrote about her dress shopping experiences and said, “When you’re in a big dress, people are oohing and aahing, and you want to take it off, you’ll need an honest, reliable companion to say, ‘I love it.’” But it’s not you. Your wedding dress is the most important dress you’ll ever wear. It should be perfect.
2. Trying on too many dresses. Most brides should try on four to seven dresses and shouldn’t try more than 10, because it will confuse them. The most common mistake brides make is not buying their dream wedding dress.

Always such a delight to sit here with my morning coffee and watch a new Frieda article. One of my favourite things about tulle – NO SEWN HEM. My favourite trick to gathering – doing a zigzag stitch over top of a strong, heavy thread so that the heavy one is caught underneath the zigzags. I find that way i never snap the finer thread when gathering in the fabric. I very much enjoy your journey, Frieda, and i am so grateful you share it with us.
I have watched this article fully 4 times! I love the ethereal looks, the 3rd one is my favorite! Of course, each one is beautiful. I enjoy and appreciate the very detailed tutorial. I think your style of ” teaching” is excellent for someone who doesn’t make such delicate items, normally. I also want to sincerely, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I was able to use this article to make my Niece her prom dress. I was able to use your teachings to make a dress handed down ( she didn’t want to add to wasted clothing. She chose to add a little bit, to make it her style. It turned out lovely. With sincere gratitude for you sharing your amazing talents 😊, Audri
WONDERFUL tutorial!!! I’ll definitely be coming back to this article when I’m developing a pattern for my wedding dress! I won’t begin pattern developing until I’m prepared to start construction, because I want everything to be fresh. If I work on making the pattern and construction too early and have to stop for a lengthy period, I’ll forget key steps and such that I need to remember. Got engaged in May. We’re hoping to buy a house next year and marry the following year. I’ll start working on my wedding dress after we move into our new home.
Hello, just found your article today, and it s highly instructive. Tulle reminds me of when I did ballet, younger, so I always forget it s wearable outside easily and the no sewing hem is definitely a huge plus. I have a question as I m familiar with other types of cloth but beyond wearing a tutu, tulle not so much: if you would want to do a skirt with gradual coloring like you find sometimes in some designs from dark to lighter whatever color, would you alternate layers to get the result or would you advise having the tulle length dyed in such way (ie darker on one end and lighter on the other end of the length)?
I will take your tutorial and apply it to my 4 18 inch tall dolls i do believe they will be beautiful on my dolls as they are bjd dolls and have a beautiful figure for a tulle bodice as well I do enjoy your tutorials for my doll making thank you for showing me how to correctly do one i just cut about 19 or 20 circles for my dolls and layer mine from a center cut circle and stitch the tops togethter its pretty that way but your way will give so many more possibilities
Hello ! Thank you so much for this beautiful article and those amazing dresses. I would like to make the skirt n°1, but I don’t understand how is made the 3rd layer. I understood that the 1rst one (the base) is made from 1 half circle, the 2nd one is made from 2 half circles sewn together, the 3rd is a mystery for me (I tried to read your note: 2 x X, which is the same as the 1rst layer note, but your little drawing aside is different than the 1rst layer drawing ) . Sorry I really hope my question is clear enough 🙂
Thank you for this, ma’am. I have a question, if I may? I’m making my own wedding gown, and am doing a 14-layer ballroom skirt similar to your #3 skirt, only 15-20% fuller. My first question is about the weight of the thing. I’m mounting my skirt on a basque-waisted corset, and because I don’t want to use a crinoline, I’m employing ruffled flounces instead of straight layers to get more volume, but it’s really heavy. Would straight layers reduce the weight? And if so, how many layers might it take to get your #3 skirt a little bigger? I don’t want to be staggering down the aisle under the weight of a 200 lb dress, lol. ♥
Thank you for showing us how to make tulle skirts. I don’t sew and was terrible at it in middle school but I’ve gotten it into my head that I might want to make my own wedding dress with tulle skirt 😅 I liked your second one the most but I have a question. I would like to make a skirt that’s closer to the body, not so full of fluff ( it would have an underdress). Could you show how to make a tulle skirt that’s less fluffy, closer to body? Or could you explain how to do it? Extra love if you use ombre tulle 🥰 Thanks ☺️
Hi Frieda, thank you for such a beautiful tutorial. I wanted to ask you two questions about skirt #1. 1. What effect does varying the fullness of the layers (half, full, double circles) have on the shape of the skirt, compared with doing, for example, eight full-circle layers? 2. I’m not sure I understand what the difference is between the middle two layers (numbered #2 and #3, making up layers 3-4 and 5-6). I think it’s because I’m not understanding what why two different circumferences are used – is it that the third as a larger amount of gathering? I think a previous commenter @sophiegarcia2885 might have the same question. Thanks in advance if you’re able to get to these!
Hi, thank you for sharing! For skirt 3, the base is a sturdy circle skirt with multiple strips gathered and sewn at different heights on the skirt correct? You mention “until I start making circles”. Did you switch from sewing strips to circles onto the base? If so, at each new height, are you taking new measurements of the circumference of the base? This switch from strips to circles added to the base and their measurements confuses me a bit.
I came again to watch the article. Before quarantine I made a dress with embroidery tulle on the bodice and a little gathered skirt with a soft charmeuse, but now I want to transform it, I want to cut the lenght and add tulle to the skirt. Does it work the same if I just cut the tulle straight and gather it? I need help please🙏 😅
The skirts are beautiful. However, This was actually very complex description. I’m not new to sewing but I’m not an expert either and it seems that the actual skirt is easy to make but her description is best for expert sewers and should be dumbed down for only middle of road sewers like me. There are better beginner articles out there. It’s not super clear for me. This will frustrate me trying to follow along. Definitely an intermediate description.
