The debate surrounding the possibility of a wedding guest wearing a white dress with a floral print has been ongoing. While it is generally advised to avoid floral wedding guest dresses with predominantly white or light color patterns or a white background, it is important to consider the overall look of your outfit and how it will complement other guests’ attire.
The key consideration when choosing a white-based floral print for a wedding is the dominant color of the dress. If the dress primarily features a gray area, it may not be appropriate for any wedding event. Wedding planners and stylists weigh in on whether family and friends can wear white attire to a wedding.
The simple answer is “no,” unless the invite calls for it. At spring and summer weddings, themed events are popular, but it is important to send mixed signals. For example, if it is chilly enough to be wearing a scarf, jacket, and closed-toe shoes, it may not be the right time to be rocking a white floral print with bare legs.
There are six main wedding dress codes: white tie, daytime weddings, floral dress against a white background, floral print maxi, black off-the-shoulder mini, and white background with colorful flowers. It is essential to pay close attention to the dress code indicated on the wedding invitation and avoid wearing white floral prints that distract from the bride or her attendants.

For my upcoming wedding I’ve having my bridal party wear short white dresses. Mine will still obviously be the wedding dress, but I heard that it was a tradition for the bridal party to wear white like the bride to protect the bride from “evil spirits.” I’m not superstitious but it seems very sweet to have solidarity with the bride.
I personally think that if it is white with a colorful pattern then it’s ok to wear. I don’t think that a dress with a white base but colorful florals is inappropriate, because the other colors on it make it not so white. I would always stay away from a solid white, ivory, gold, or if there is a very subtle color that is not obvious from far away. However, I also think that wearing a white skirt or pants with a colored top would work, but not a white top with colored pants. These are the things that I would be ok with as a bride (got married in June).
I had my wedding a few months ago, and there were a few guests in dresses that were a patterned white dress. I found that cocktail dresses with a strong pattern didn’t bother me. However, there was one guest who wore a tea length dress where the top was completely white and below the waist there was a floral pattern, and for me that rubbed me the wrong way. I didn’t say anything, but it didn’t feel the best.
I just saw a wedding last weekend that was all white attire. I’d never seen that before but it was kinda classy looking. I personally think that a white floral dress would be okay, definitely not floor length though! And just to avoid any hurt feelings or issues, I would make sure the bride approved beforehand. ☺️
I did wear a patterned white dress to a relatives wedding. But I doubt it turned any heads. It was a bit tacky for a wedding. The fact is, it was a simple knee length sun dress with matching vest that another cousin hand made of a simple pattern. At the time of the invitation, the dresses I had wear pretty old and worn. The sundress was in the best shape. My relative has a picture of us on Facebook together at her wedding, her in her beautiful traditional wedding dress, me in my somewhat tacky white large flower pattern sun dress. I doubt anybody thought about THAT dress being anything but an eye sore.
A friend of mine wants to wear her short white dress with big pink and black color blocks – which is totally ok for me. If it would be mostly white with just teany tiny flowers this would upset me quite a lot. Black on the other end would be worse! I hate it when women wear a black dress to a wedding – this would make me feel like they don’t appreciate our love and see it as a funeral. 😢
I personally feel it’s okay to wear a white base with a colorful pattern. Where I live it’s very common for brides to wear an all-white cocktail dress for signing the papers, when they’re not signed during the ceremony, so to me this kind of dress still feels a bit too bridal. I don’t think I’d mind either on my own wedding, but I’d definitely not wear one to someone else’s wedding. A floor-length white or ivory dress would only be ok if the bride says so. I don’t think it would actually clash with the bride’s dress, but it could still make her upset.
Cavin, do you personally feel like the circumstances are any different if the bride is not wearing a white dress? I’ve only ever attended weddings where the bride is in white, but did you feel differently or have you seen the etiquette change at weddings you’ve photographed if the bride is not in white?
LOLLL “not all white ppl” 😂😂😂 I can’t say that’s what I was thinking when I hear all white wedding lolll I feel like the picture of the cocktail dress you showed is totally fine. All white and no patterned gowns I would be side eyeing but I personally wouldn’t start anything probably but I’m also looking into not wearing white too so there’s that lol
No! It is not ok! It hapened to me. At my wedding my husband’s (ex now) best girl friend wore a white shiny bright pearl white dress and this is a woman who’s been always rude to me because it was obvious that she has been always jealous of me. She showed her jealousy to every one at the wedding as well and she looked bad, rude, unclassy in everybody’s eyes. By the way at Catherine Zeta Jones wedding Michael Douglas’s mother had worn white. That was not a all white wedding.
I think white dresses are fine at weddings unless the bride and groom says no. I think short white dresses are fine or a floral with white on it. But maybe not a long white dress. We are having a somewhat all white wedding. Everything is white. Our colors is white, ivory, silver, and gold. We will be asking our guests to wear our wedding colors or like nude or beige or cream. Black is okay for the men since my husband and our groomsmen will be wearing white and black. Our bridesmaids are wearing long ivory chiffon dresses. I love white weddings. They are classy and elegant.
I saw this happen at the most recent wedding I attended this past June! 🤯 To me, it’s never worth the risk—I err on the side of it’s never okay. I’d be iffy even if it was a floral pattern! In the instance of the wedding I was at, the girl who wore white was a high school student, so I think she truly didn’t know any better. Also the bride was very chill and didn’t mind! But it’s definitely jarring to see if you’re not expecting it! 😅
Since my dream dress isn’t floor length nor all white I’d be upset if someone showed up at my wedding in a dress that’s mostly white or even really light pastel colours. I think that it’s rude to wear such a dress to a wedding, same for a (mostly) white suit. I think a white shirt is okay, but those usually are just part of an outfit with trousers and a blazer that come in different colours.
