Did Carlin And Evan Kiss Before Marriage?

Carlin Bates, daughter of Bringing Up Bates stars Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, married Evan Stewart in a romantic ceremony at Castleton Farms in Tennessee on May 25, 2019. The couple, who started dating in September 2016 and married in May 2019, have a history of kissing before marriage. The Bates family, who are traditionalist Christians who support strict dating guidelines and oppose birth control, has seven of their 19 children married and three more on the verge of getting married.

Carlin and Evan had a romantic relationship for two years before getting engaged. They love each other and know each other well, but they did not choose to talk about it. The couple tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in Tennessee, and Bates first shared a kiss with her fiancé, Evan, on their wedding day.

While the Bates family had previously portrayed kissing before marriage as forbidden, Carlin Bates admitted to doing it in an attempt to normalize their views. She and Evan have been married for 2.5 years and have a strong bond, with their love for each other and their mutual respect for each other. The couple’s decision to not kiss before marriage was not considered by the Bates family, but it was their own choice as grown ups.

What age did girls marry in Victorian times?

2. They didn’t marry young. In the 1800s, most people got married at 28 for men and 26 for women. In the 19th century, English women got married at an average age of 22. Patterns varied by social and economic class. Working-class women married older than their aristocratic counterparts. But the idea that all English women married before leaving their teens is wrong.

3. They didn’t marry their cousins. In the early 1800s, it was fine to marry your first cousin. It had some benefits. It was easier for young women to meet and be courted by bachelors within the family. Later in the 19th century, marriage between cousins became less common. Railroads and other economic improvements made it easier for young women to find husbands. At the same time, people became more aware of birth defects caused by relatives having children. Cousin marriages were still popular among the upper class. Charles Darwin married his first cousin, Emma Wedgwood. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were also first cousins.

When did people start kissing before marriage?

The earliest reference to kissing-like behavior comes from the Vedas, around 3,500 years ago. However, recent studies challenge the belief that kissing originated in South Asia around 1500 BCE. Figurines show that kissing may have been done in prehistory. It is thought that Neandertals and humans kissed. Evidence from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt shows that kissing was documented as early as 2500 BCE. Kissing was common in ancient Mesopotamia, but it was regulated by society. Public displays of sexual kissing were discouraged. Kissing was also used in rituals. Kissing might have spread germs, which could cause disease. New DNA tests have found pathogens in ancient human remains, including those spread by saliva. The change in the type of herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) during the Bronze Age shows that kissing could have spread the virus. Ancient Mesopotamian texts mention a disease called bushanu, which may have been related to HSV-1 infection. Kissing was not directly linked to disease in Mesopotamia, but certain cultural and religious factors influenced its practice.

Both lip and tongue kissing are mentioned in Sumerian poetry:

My precious sweet, lying by my heart, one by one tonguemaking, one by one.

Who did Zach kiss on the first night?

Zachs’ first kiss of the season happened after he met Bailey in the limo. He called her “Bailen” during the After the Final Rose introduction. “I didn’t have any rules for night one.” The Bachelor returned to basics for season 27, just like Zach Shackleford wanted. The 26-year-old, who lives in Austin, Texas, had 30 women show up at the mansion on Monday, January 23, to explore a connection with him during the ABC series’ return. Five of the women, Bailey, Brianna, Brooklyn, Cat, and Christina, were familiar faces from the live After the Final Rose taping for season 19 of The Bachelorette in September 2022. Brianna won America’s first impression rose, which made some of the other contestants upset.

  • I have never understood why kissing before marriage is a problem for so many Christians. When you get married, you are marrying a man, not a boy. You are both adults, and you should both be mature enough to keep healthy boundaries, yet allow some intimacy as well. Kissing doesn’t have to lead to sex if you are both strong in your convictions. My husband and I were engaged for three years before getting married. We did a lot of cuddling and kissing, yet still waited for sex until our wedding night. The fact that we had some level of intimacy together before that night made the wedding night much more comfortable and natural.

  • Y’all have a precious family! I love how you answered the question “will you keep having kids until you have a boy.” We have 6 daughters and we get that question all the time. We love and wanted all our girls. God gave us exactly what we needed. We would have loved a boy if we had one but we love our girls just as much! Prayers for your sweet family!

  • Alyssa when you said a lot of the fans thought you were a snob, I didn’t think that just different than all the rest of your family. You’re both incredibly beautiful, you got married very early, and you move to Florida and had a large house. What really showed me who the two of you really were was when John came home from work, Alyssa you packed Ally and would go clean businesses at night and you both work so hard on the cleaning and did a phenomenal job. I felt really bad for the misconception. I was proud of you two and knew you were hard workers, never complained and did what you had to for your family. That’s when I had the utmost respect for you two. I was glad that we got to see you more on the show. And know on through your family articles.

  • My husband and I have been married 30plus and I have to say you guys gave some great advice. One thing that we promise one another was never go to bed mad, you know you’re not promised tomorrow.. Always put God first in your marriage, that’s what worked for us… I love your website you guys have a gorgeous family….

  • I agree with taking time to decorate, you have to feel out the space. But considering you just moved in with 4 little ones what you have done so far looks great! Also thank you for acknowledging that some of the post baby weight loss is attributable to age and metabolism. Some women probably needed to hear that. Maci is super cute!

  • Love this article! You and John are such a cute couple. I didn’t get to see your courtship and wedding on Bringing Up Bates,so I enjoy your articles on YouTube. Ya’ll were so honest about arguing the first year of marriage and on kissing before marriage. So good to see the honesty from you. Thanks for sharing your family life with us. Your daughters are beautiful and have such great personalities- looking forward to seeing little Maci’s develop.😊

  • 4 weeks is impressive to remodel. Your blessed to have such a big family to help on all of life’s endeavors and after you have a new baby. Your parents did the hard work but it has benefited all of you kids as you have your families ❤️. Love your mother, Kelly, so much. And Alyssa you are a lovely person it’s so nice to see you on here.

  • I really enjoyed all of this Q & A. Ya’ll keep it real and it’s just precious to hear how your life goes. We raised 4 children also. Twins first (boy & girl) then 5 year gap with a single boy and 20 months later our baby girl. God always blesses when you put Him first and one another next and children 3rd. John was great stating something similar to that. Enjoy all the moments!! They grow up way too fast. Our “littles” are now in their 40’s!

  • Hi from Texas! You both seem so sweet and loving toward each other, making it seem so easy. What I notice the more articles I watch, is that in the beginning of y’all as a couple, you were comfortable in front of the camera and John was more quiet, and now John seems more out spoken and very relaxed, at least with the YouTube. You both seem to fit so well together. Debbie R.

  • I just discovered that I was not subscribed to your website and I fixed that! I wonder if Alyssa, can you do a hair Tutorial and make up tutorial sometime soon? I haven’t seen any if you have already done them, so I was wondering sometime when you had time if you could do that for us? Thank you for sharing part of your lives with us!

  • I love your honesty with some of these questions (kissing before marriage, and how your first year married had some conflict and fighting as you learned to navigate being with someone else). It’s just real and even though it can be hard to talk about, my husband and I met at 17 and have been married 10 years this October and our first years together we had to learn how to communicate. People tell us now how our marriage is so perfect (which obviously no marriage is), but we spend a lot of time and hard work centering God in our marriage and learning to communicate with each other that has allowed us to be that funny couple who can joke around with each other and avoid most of those big arguments. It’s nice to see you guys having fun and relaxing more in front of the camera (I know my husband and I would be so shy talking about our lives in front of the camera). We have 2 girls and 1 boy, and people always asked us if we were going to keep trying for a boy. It actually made my poor husband so frustrated when we found out our baby was a boy and people would tell him, “you finally got your boy!” Because as much as he loves his son, he doesn’t enjoy how that makes his daughters feel, like he was sitting around waiting on God to send him a boy and they weren’t good enough for him. So we really relate. I almost feel like we have to have a 4th baby just to show people we didn’t stop having kids just because we got a boy 😂

  • I just adore you both and your 4 precious girls. You guys are so genuine, kind and amazing parents. I really enjoyed this Q&A as I do all your articles and I finally subscribed to your website, yippee! Oh and I laughed so much with the kiss before marriage answer, loved how you both were so honest, cute and happy about it. Blessings to the six of you as well as the rest of the sweet Bates family, who I also adore.

  • Ya’ll are soooo cute! And those little girls are adorable. I definitely think people misjudged you thinking ya’ll were snobs. Lol Ya’ll are so personable and funny. Keep making these cool articles, they are fun to watch! Wishing you guys blessings as a family! P.S. Come to Italy… welcome!! You’ll love it for vacation!! There’s many American people living here that would host you guys. 😃

  • I think you are a naturally confident and mature person and sometimes that can appear as snobbish to others. I had that misconception of you as well. So I’m happy to see more of you and see that your incredibly diligent and gifted, grounded and humble. First impressions are usually always wrong anyway ❤️😃👍

  • I agree with waiting to furnish the downstairs. I believe there is a interior designer called design by Casanova on YouTube and she recommends finding the one maybe more expensive staple piece of furniture for each room and building off of it. It really makes sense when you think about it because it allows a new homeowner to take their time with their decisions. Thank you for answering the many questions and John don’t worry about having arguments in your first year of marriage because it lead you both into a better rest of your marriage figuring out your differences

  • This is one of my absolute favorite articles thank you I just can’t get over that you’re pregnant with your fourth child you had to completely redo the house even with both families helping that was a lot of work on you guys but your taste is impeccable I just love it. Your children your girls are just supposed to adorable well-behaved in homeschooling is it easy I give you all koodles.

  • Our 4th made me want a 5th.😅 My expectations were sooooo low after the transition to 3. It was probably the most difficult season of our life together so far. Number 4 we had a 3y9mos age gap and it was heavenly. That said the minute I held our fifth, I knew I was going to enjoy the goodness out of him and that we were done. ☺️

  • wow, good strategy by saving the big question for last. So, with a family who believed that kisses should be saved for the wedding altar, how did you come to the decision that not doing that was right for you? Or did you regret it? What do you recommend? Do you know any couples who did save their first kiss and regret it? Just trying to learn.

  • I’ve heard others say baby #3 was the hardest too. For me it was baby #2, she had severe colic from 2 weeks until 5 months. That was such a hard time. Baby #3 was a surprise and I cried for months when I found out I was pregnant, I didn’t think I could do it again. But he was my angel baby, never cried, did just what he was “supposed to” when he was supposed to do it. (Also followed the Babywise book). Baby #4, was an “average” baby, but I felt like a pro by that point. 😉 That’s where we stopped, I knew I was all the mom I could be with those 4. Everybody is different and that was my limit. Your mom is an amazing mother to that many children, she inspires and impresses me. Since y’all aren’t able to be on the show as much I’m now enjoying getting to know more of y’all here. Blessings on your sweet family! ❤️

  • You two are sooo cute. Out of all the kids from your family Alyssa, you’re my fav. Here’s another ??? So, how many of your brothers & sisters that are now married KISSED prior to getting married (besides you & John?) Do you know? Admitting things that you’ve been asked just really shows how relaxed and totally honest you two are. Raising kids, to be honest, is hard work, but truly worth it. Making sure your kids know that if they mess up and are honest with Mom and Dad really helps them to know you trust them. We always told our kids “Just be honest. If you’ve done something wrong, don’t worry, it’s okay. We all make mistakes. The important thing is that you HAVE LEARNED from it (the mistakes) Our sons didn’t drink or smoke as teens however they always told their friends if they did drink to PLZ call and our kids would pick them (their friends) up. Surprisingly our house was the house our kid’s friends hung out at…..because they knew they could talk to us without judgment. It’s so important to do what you’ve promised. IF you tell your kids you won’t be upset if they do “XYZ” and you aren’t upset, it means so much. They then know that the next time they mess up they can be honest with you. I laughed when John said “No, we aren’t rich, we have 4 kids, come on! ” Keep up the great articles. I love it that you share your busy lives with everyone. God Bless and Happy Mother’s Day Alyssa!

  • The fourth child is truly the easiest! She was an angel and I surely needed that with four 5 and under. Also our first six months of marriage were a struggle, but we talked it out every time even though it took till 2 in the morning. It is truly the best marriage advice we received. ” Talk until you both feel ok.”

  • Totally agree that 4th children are the easiest. I’ve done my research as the 4th child in my family 🤣. I always wanted 4 kids myself since I was really young, but unfortunately children aren’t in the plans God has for me. Thank you for sharing your lives with us here in YouTube, always just a lovely entertaining time.

  • My suggestion for first time pregnancy/birth is to avoid back labor/long labor. Get down on your hands and knees, get your butt up in the air, head down (on a pillow) especially during labor/contractions. Crawling around too helps give the baby room to fit it’s head into the pelvis correctly. The number 1 thing that prolongs labor or causes back labor is the back of the baby’s head (occiput) is toward mom’s back (occiput posterior). Babies normally start coming out with the back of their head toward your front (occiput anterior) then rotate once coming out of the birth canal.

  • So glad you were honest about arguing early in your marriage and other difficult times. Marriage is HARD and you constantly have to choose to love and stay committed to your spouse. So man marriages fail because it’s easier to quit than to put in the work. God in the equation definitely gives you a fighting chance, imho. Thanks for sharing! ❤️

  • Love love love this! His blushing face and her eyes…give it away! Love y’alls honesty! Totally agree with the communication factor for a happy marriage, but I encourage any new couple or friends to try to learn about body language during communication…it says so much without saying anything. You can’t see it if you are always paying attention to something else.

  • I was glad for what you shared about Lexi being funny and making you all laugh. I’m going to tell you an impression I have from seeing her many times in your family articles, I’m not trying to be mean this is just something I’ve seen, she has seemed to be very whiny and pouty so apparently that is not the case most of the time so that is good to know .she just doesn’t seem as smiley and happy as Zoe and Allie in articles many times

  • It’s great you learned how to communicate so early in your relationship ! my husband and I were married when we were each 26 years old .we were both Christians for several years and very committed to our marriage; unfortunately we were both raised in households where the parents did not get along and were not Christians, who argued and fought a lot so we did not learn how to resolve issues peacefully and it’s taken most of 40 years of marriage to really do well with that and we’re still working on it but it’s not as bad as it used to be

  • Where in Italy? North-South-Beach-Big cities-Islands? You could probably get a great deal on the plane tickets if you book 4-5 months in advance and good deals on housing as well. A really good price on flight tickets if you are willing to fly to somewhere else and then get a cheap Ryanair/Easyjet ticket out to Italy…that might mean changing airports though as international flights and cheap carriers usually don’t service the same airport. Ryanair/Easyjet to Italy from other european city might be as low as 15-20 eur per person. Even 10 eur and under if you book during a sale. Italy is a great place to travel with kids as italians LOVE kids, the smaller the city, the safer it is. The smaller the city, the bigger the language barrier for english speakers as well but still, super nice people. Cheap food if you get out of big cities and amazing climate. I would love to see you family holiday in Italy vlog!

  • Do true it is easier to loose bsby weight in your 20’s. . I had my first son at 21and gained 40 pounds snd lost it all before 6? weeks. I was 40 with my second Don and gained 30 pounds it took 2 1/2 months to lose. My third Don I was 43 and gained 15 pounds and it took about 3-4 months to lose. Snd he was 6 weeks early because of high blood pressure so I was really sick! Both with high blood pressure snd morning sickness the whole pregnancy. But I had more patience in my 40’s but it was more exhausting. My oldest was 19 when my second son came and 22 when his last brother came. But he is their best protector and mine. But all my boys are close and protect and love each other and me. I am so blessed. A girl would of been nice but I would never trade any of my sons for anything.

  • Just wanted to clarify they have a clotting disorder.. which means they need blood thinners.. this causes clots during pregnancy and means your blood thickens which is why they need the thinners.. you don’t have excessive bleeding with this, but the opposite. The clots can form in the umbilical chord preventing nutrients from getting to baby, ultimately causing the miscarriage

  • I disagree about the pickup test. Kids starring around 5 months understand patterns they may stop crying because they think a bottle is about to come. I would say take that advice but hold them for 5 mins and see if they continue to cry after they realize a pattern they were expecting isn’t going to happen

  • I have breastfeed all of my kids, for long periods, except my twins were less time because I wear young and didn’t know anything about it, (they were my first) but now I’ve gathered a lOT of information, and let me tell you a very important thing. If you want a long breastfeeding relationship do not supplement with bottles at all. They get used to it and it is easier for them. So please don’t supplement with any bottles this time. And don’t start food with her until she grabs it off your plate by herself. My son did not eat solid food until he was almost two. He was perfectly fine and healthy.

  • I want to ask several adult ?’s. 1) do you or have you or any of your adult siblings drank alcohol I mean come on… 2) Are the Bates guys treated differently than the girls regarding kissing and sex before marriage? 3) do you take birth control or will you have your tubes tide to stop having kids. 4) have you watched tv in your life because there is no tv allowed in the Bates main house per Gil and have you since watched TV after moving out including Rated R movies or pornography.

  • I’m glad you admitted that you kiss before he got married I’m a devout Catholic I do think that kissing is a very important part of getting to know each other in the relationship and seeing if you have that chemistry you’re going to need along with other values to get married. But I also believe that you wait until your married before you have sex that’s a guy’s ass of us get that one chance to share the first time with somebody and that’s a gift that you can never purchase or make a sacrifice or however you want to look at it for the person you plan on spending the rest of your life with. It is worth the wait.

  • This is random, but I think it’s cute that they gave their girls names that end with either IE, I or, Y! That’s kind of similar to me because growing up my older sisters and I had names with IE in them (Katie, Mollie, and Abbie)! And my mom always told us that if she had a fourth daughter, then she would have kept the theme and name her Julie! But since I ended up being the youngest I’m thinking about using a version of that name like Julianna or Juliette for one of my future daughters when I’m ready to start my own family one day!

  • Courting is stupid…. You need to have sex with multiple people to find out if someone is good in bed because good luck fixing that in couples therapy and you need to experience life as a single adult on your own. I’m so surprised none of the Bates kids have divorced because a few seem a little unhappy.
