Marilyn Lovell, the wife of Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell, lost her wedding ring in real life before her husband had a problem. The ring was not added to the movie for dramatic effect but was later recovered. Marilyn Lovell testified that her husband lost her ring down a shower drain the morning of the launch. When asked about being in the film as the ship’s Admiral, Lovell agreed but mentioned retiring as a Captain.
The astronauts did shiver for days after cutting the heat to conserve power for the mission. In a few scenes, Earth can be seen from the windows of Apollo 13, and one of the pictures from the Apollo 8 mission that Jim Lovell and Bill Anders took during that mission is used. Marilyn Lovell’s strength as a wife and mother was front and center during the Apollo 13 mission as she watched her husband Jim Lovell return to Earth after a near-fatal explosion.
In 1968, Marilyn Lovell was the only astronaut’s wife to watch the launch of the Apollo 8 in person as her husband, Frank Borman, and Bill Anders became the first astronauts to view the dark side of the moon. When asked about being in the film as the ship’s Admiral, Lovell agreed but pointed out retiring as a Captain. Marilyn Lovell eventually found her ring again.
Marilyn Lovell, the wife of astronaut Jim Lovell, was seen losing her wedding ring in the shower during the Apollo 13 mission. Lovell recounted the incident, which was based on a real-life event. She claimed that the part where Marilyn dropped her ring down the drain was written. Lovell confirmed that she did indeed lose her ring, glasses, car keys, and favorite book on the launch. Marilyn Lovell praised Quinlan’s portrayal of her and felt she could understand the character’s emotions.

Why didn’t NASA go to the Moon again?
Six more trips to the Moon followed Apollo 11. Five of them landed successfully. Twelve men walked on the Moon. But in 1970, future Apollo missions were cancelled. Apollo 17 was the last crewed mission to the Moon. Money was the main reason. It cost a lot to get to the Moon. When was the last time we went to space? We haven’t sent humans to the Moon since the 1970s, but we now send crews into space regularly.
Skylab – 1973-1974. Skylab was the first NASA space station. It operated from May 1973 to February 1974. It had a workshop, an observatory, and did hundreds of experiments.
Are any of the Apollo 11 crew still alive?
Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to walk on the Moon. Four of the moonwalkers are still alive. Aldrin, Scott, Duke, and Schmitt were on the Apollo 11, 15, 16, and 17 missions, respectively.
How old was Tom Hanks in Apollo 13?
Hanks was only 38, a few years younger than Lovell, but he had just won two Oscars for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. He was the biggest movie star in the world. His streak of personal nominations ended in 1996. Apollo 13 was nominated for nine Oscars and won two, for Best Film Editing and Best Sound.
17. Marilyn Lovell said that Hanks nailed her husband’s mannerisms, so it’s an honor. In 1996, Hanks was honored with an asteroid named after him: 12818 Tomhanks.
18. Clint Howard is in many movies, including ones made by his brother Ron Howard. His role as Johnson in the Austin Powers trilogy is a parody of his character in Apollo 13.
How much of the movie Apollo 13 is true?
The movie is very accurate. That’s why it was so popular with the public, critics, and NASA astronauts. This was one of the director’s main concerns.
Five facts about the Apollo 13 movie and how they actually happened in real life.
On April 17, 1970, the world held its breath as astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise launched themselves towards the Earth at over 20,000 miles per hour. They fought to survive for six days in a damaged spacecraft.
They had used most of their supplies, and now it was re-entry time. If they hit the Earth’s atmosphere at…
Did Jim Lovell ever make it to the moon?
Lovell was the Spacecraft Commander of Apollo 13, launched on April 11, 1970. He was the first man to go to the Moon twice, but never landed. Apollo 13 was supposed to last ten days, but the oxygen system failed after 55 hours. From almost 200,000 miles away from Earth, Lovell and his crewmates worked with Houston ground controllers to turn the Lunar Module Aquarius into a lifeboat. Their emergency use of the lunar module systems kept them safe and alive in space and helped them return to Earth. Apollo 13 was 248,655 miles from Earth when it passed over the far side of the moon. That’s the farthest anyone has ever gone into space. On April 17, Apollo 13 returned safely. Captain Lovell had spent 715 hours and 5 minutes in space. On March 1, 1973, James Lovell retired from the Navy. He left NASA and joined Bay-Houston Towing Company in Houston, Texas. He became President and CEO on March 1, 1975. On January 1, 1977, Captain Lovell became President of Fisk Telephone Systems, Inc. in Houston. On January 1, 1981, he was appointed Group Vice President of Business Communications Systems at Centel Corporation. He retired from Centel on January 1, 1991. Captain Lovell has received many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, two Navy Distinguished Flying Crosses, the 1967 FAI De Laval and Gold Space Medals, the American Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award, the City of New York Gold Medal, and the City of Houston Medal for Valor. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Special Trustees Award, 1969; the Institute of Navigation Award, 1969; the University of Wisconsin’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award, 1970; co-recipient of the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Awards, 1966 and 1968; the Harmon International Trophy, 1966, 1967 and 1969; the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, 1969; H. H. Arnold Trophy, 1969; General Thomas D. White USAF Space Trophy, 1969; Robert J. Collier Trophy, 1968; Henry G. Bennett Distinguished Service Award; and AIAA Haley Astronautics Award, 1970. In 1995, he was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor for saving the lives of his Apollo 13 crew.
How many children did Jim and Marilyn Lovell have?
They married in 1952 after he graduated. She is survived by her husband, four children, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
How long were Jim and Marilyn Lovell married?
Marilyn Lovell, who kept her cool during the Apollo 13 crisis, died on August 27 in Lake Forest, Illinois, at 93. Her husband, Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell, was with her. Her husband named a mountain on the moon after her during his Apollo 8 flight in 1968. Marilyn Lillie Lovell was born on July 11, 1930, in Milwaukee, WI. She was the youngest of five children. She graduated from Juneau High School in Milwaukee, where she met her future husband, Jim Lovell. Marilyn went to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., to be close to him while he was at the U.S. Naval Academy. They married right after he graduated in Annapolis, MD. She was an active member of the original “Astronauts Wives Club,” promoting her husband’s NASA career.
Who was Tom Hanks’ first wife?
Hanks divorced his first wife, Samantha Lewes. They married in 1978 but divorced in 1987. Hanks met Wilson on the set of Volunteers in 1985. In 1988, a year before When Harry Met Sally, Hanks and Wilson married. This ended his “I’m so happy to be divorced” story. Hanks wasn’t the only one who turned down the role of Harry. Richard Dreyfuss, Michael Keaton, and Albert Brooks also turned it down. Billy Crystal, who had worked with Rob Reiner on The Princess Bride, took the part. He starred opposite Meg Ryan. Sending the script to Hanks wasn’t a total waste, Wilson said. “I loved the script. I read it and was excited,” she told Bozzi. Wilson already liked Ephron’s work, and the screenplay made her like her more. Wilson asked to audition for Ephron’s next project, Sleepless in Seattle. She got a role, and her husband Hanks starred in the film.
Did Jim Lovell have a cameo in Apollo 13?
Cameos: Jim Lovell plays the captain of the recovery ship USS Iwo Jima. Howard wanted to make him an admiral, but Lovell chose to appear in his actual rank (and wearing his own Navy uniform). Marilyn Lovell is among the spectators during the launch. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan star in Apollo 13, a 1995 American film directed by Ron Howard. The screenplay by William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert is about the 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission. It is based on the 1994 book Lost Moon. The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13 by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. The film is about astronauts Lovell, Swigert, and Haise on Apollo 13, the fifth American mission to the moon. On the way to the moon, an explosion destroys their oxygen and electricity. NASA has to abandon the moon landing and find other ways to get the astronauts back to Earth.
Who were the three astronauts lost in space?
Three granite benches honor the dead. “Launch Complex 34, Friday, January 27, 1967, 6:31 p.m.,” it says. Another remembers the three astronauts who died here more than half a century ago. These three American astronauts died in a terrible accident, but their sacrifice helped the Apollo program succeed.
A boring spacecraft. The Apollo 1 crew knew their ship could never reach the Moon. It was never meant to. The Block 1 spacecraft was only meant for Earth-orbital tests. It didn’t have the tools for a lunar voyage. (Those flights would wait for the more advanced Block 2.) But many astronauts disliked and distrusted Block 1 for its faulty wiring, bad software, leaky valves, and unresolved technical problems. North American Aviation was blamed for poor workmanship and lax safety standards. In his memoir, astronaut Tom Stafford called the Washington operators “slick” and “bigtime,” contrasting them with the “mom-and-pop” operation at McDonnell, which built NASAs earlier Gemini spacecraft. During Gemini, astronauts could talk to James McDonnell, but North American was different.
Did all 3 astronauts survive Apollo 13?
Did the Apollo 13 crew survive? Yes, though the mission failed, Apollo 13 made it back to Earth and the whole crew survived. Apollo 13 was the third moon landing for NASA, but the astronauts never reached the lunar surface.
An oxygen tank explosion 56 hours into the flight forced the crew to abandon the moon landing. The spacecraft was damaged, but the crew found shelter in the lunar module for the trip back to Earth. They returned to the command module for an uncomfortable splashdown. The mission shows the dangers of space travel and how NASA saved lives. The Apollo 13 mission celebrated its 50th anniversary on April 11, 2020.

“I’m just looking for the bathroom” “I think you’ve found it” LMAO I loved it, especially his impression of Helen’s monotone voice. And “not you little boy, move” made even more hilarious when you picture him saying this to some 80 year old woman. lol. Did John get to write his own lines or improv? He was hilarious. And when carol opened the door and the fake guppy was on the stool, I died laughing. And I’m convinced the bit about Carol’s shoes not fitting was just there to make Nessa break, cause it worked. Same with Her drowning in the ball pit.
I was crying of laughter when John pushed Vanessa on the couch and then when he also pushed Carol and said: “not you little boy ” I was laughing so hard because he thought Carol was a little boy 😭😂😅😄😁 but I also love that they Included their dad in the article ❤️❤️🥺🥺 love you guys and how you care so much about their family and friends 🥺, you always make my day 😘
The plot with Carol wearing Roni’s ring!!! So funny. I rewind to the beginning and saw that she was wearing it ever since they entered the apartment so I’m thinking she forgot to take it off when she started playing Carol and they had to improv that into the show to prevent reshooting everything 😂😂 great work, I loved it!
Oh my goodness. This is GOLD! You guys deserve an award for this article!!! Seriously! 🤩🙌🏼💖 The Merrell Twins Exposed is my favorite series of yours and this is the BEST yet! Everything was on point: The story, the acting, the characters, the lines. 🤌🏼 I love how RonRon’s apartment was a location and Aaron’s millions of balls were integrated into a hilarious scene. (Roni, you are a natural at comedy!) Literally everything about this article was amazing so it’s difficult to specify favorite parts. It was a bad idea to watch this at bedtime because this had me in stitches! 🤣🤣🤣 Tiger and Guppy were adorable and played great parts in the story. 💗 Everyone was AMAZING but, I must say, the breakout artist award goes to John! He is hilarious as Tow B. Tucker! His acting was awesome. I hope he becomes a recurring character! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ One last thing, I miss James Llerrem! He is my absolute favorite character of Nessa! Nessa, you are brilliant and hilarious in that role. Hope you keep bringing him back, even with John and Aaron joining your articles now. And Joseph is also cool with James! Keep it up, Roni and Nessa! Thank you for making such awesome articles! Love you!! 💜💖
This was yet another fantastic gem of an episode of Merrell Twins Exposed! And of course I love the new changes in their lives that have been added into the series. Roni living and being married with/to Aaron, John added to the series with a funny new character! Well done Merrell fam! Because: Yes, to me Aaron and John (and not to forget: Guppy 😉) are a part of the Merrell Twins too, for me at least! ❤️
This is my first Exposed episode. Great work all, those characters are so much fun, although ive always been a Carol fan as ive seen her in other vids. Also loving Johns British accent. I love how Papa Merrill has as much fun as you all do, you are so lucky to have him. I have to ask, whats with the bananas? 🍌 I laughed out loud several times which was a welcome change right now. I just lost my husband so life has been a little tough. Thank you for a short break from reality. ❤️🩹
My wife bought a bracelet from a garage sale for $25, she gave it to our daughter for a birthday present, our daughter had it appraised and it turns out that the bracelet was worth $12,000. It was a bracelet made in Germany in WWII that the German soldiers made for their mothers as something to remember them by due to the chance that they might not return from war and that there were only about a dozen or so of these bracelets in excistance so you never know what you will find at a flea market or garage sale
My business partner dated a girl who came from a poor background, had a massive emerald ring that she inherited from her grandmother, and she wore it for years thinking it was glass. He on the other hand had learned to identify gemstones and after taking a good look at it he told her “honey, that is a real emerald and worth upwards of $10,000.”
Someone in my hometown also had the same incident, she bought a ring for 3$ and went to a jewelry shop and offered her 100,000$ she thought he was joking until she went to another shop who also gave her the same value estimation of that diamond ring and realized later it was the real deal 🙂 i heard she tried to find the real owner of that ring but i dont know what happened.
My wife had a beautiful one K diamond ring. We were fishing from a boat in a large deep lake in CA when she took it off, because It was catching on her fishing reel. She accidentally dropped it into the water! Five years later, I was cutting up a fish that I had caught in that same lake, when suddenly, my knife struck something hard. It was the bone in my thumb.
I had a similar situation. My grandpa bought a bunch of jewelry in an estate sale. My grandma sent some of it up to me and it turns out one of the rings was a yellow gold/platinum setting with a half carrot diamond. Cut in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Used it as the main stone in my first engagement ring. 💍
A friend is a “rock hound” and would pickup rocks all the time to time and shape them. One day he stopped at a garage sale and bought someone’s collection. One of the rocks intrigue him so he started shaping it. He suddenly stopped because he realized he was way out of his league with the value of the rock. It turns out to be a very large very perfect emerald that he sold to a private party for 2.6 million. Why can’t I have that kind of luck?
Wow what a coincidence!! Just now I was standing in the checkout line at wholefoods and this lady was also eyeing my earrings 😂 and she told me those my style of diamond jacket earrings are definitely vintage and quite rare and no one makes those anymore!! Made me want to look into it more so I did a search and found this article and laughed when I heard the similar story. Maybe I should get them appraised… regardless, I ain’t auctioning these bad boys off 😎💍💎
✨it was likely more valuable than what it sold for . .she should’ve held out for more at the auction, insisting on a fixed reserve of at least 650k pounds to open the bidding . .because a 26 carat (weight) fully faceted, cushion cut diamond from the 19th century is a rarity in itself, the period may have been the Belle Époque era when the cushion cut and old mine cuts were fashionable then . Something happened to me in a thrift store finding a platinum & gold cigar band ring laced in rubies & diamonds, I paid $12- for it and brought it to my friend who specialized in antique jewelry . .she told me it was from the 1920’s, has a 6.0 gram weight . ..I was disbelieving her but these flea markets or thrift stores have got buried treasures . .✨ . .the ring was valued at $ 2500-
my mother bought a silver ring for $5 at a flea market back in 1989….she only wore it couple of times cause it was fashion….she said that everyone used to ask her about her cheap ring cause it called the attention….it was tarnished…and the stone was really dark in the inside….one day a good friend of the family that happens to be a jeweler took a look and examined the ring just cause she asked him to clean….HE FOUND OUT THAT THE RING IS A REAL DIAMOND….AND ITS VALUE IS AROUND $5000…SHE CLEANED AND OF COURSE SHE STILL HAS IT.!!!!!
S friend of mine bought a ring from an Estate sale for,$5, she put it away but something kept telling her to have it checked to see if it had any value so she took it to her jewlery store. They kept it a few days and they called her to come get it.. when she got to the store she was told that the red dtoned were actually rubies and the cleaner white stones were diamonds. The mounting was platinum. She thought it was silver. They estimated the value at $10,000 dollars
I once went to a flea market. I got a flat tire and it started to rain, after struggling with the jack came to find out the lug nuts were so tight I slipped in the mud and spotted a gold gleam through the sand. Fortunate for me and you could imagine my surprise the gold gleam was actually my car keys had fallen from my jacket. Apparently a hole had been worn in my jacket pocket. This jacket was 100% genuine cow leather and had been given to me by my grandfather whom I had always loved dearly. He was a kind old man who had a hearty laugh. One day he laughed so hard it put him in the hospital, strangely the hospital was very near where I got the flat tire. I thought to myself what a strange set of coincidences. Of course my grandfather is home now, he loves to sit by the fire, especially on a rainy day. Crimey, I wish it would stop raining. Oh yeah where was I? Mud was everywhere…
I had an ugly gold cheap looking ring. My uncle gave it to me with some other costume jewelry. I had all my rings in a small bag so i took that bag one day to the pawnshop with intentions of getting a small loan on one to pay a bill. The jewelry appraiser was super interested in that ugly gold ring, come to find out it was solid 18kt gold and a 3kt diamond which he said was one of the clearest diamond he had ever seen, he bought it right then and there for $10,500. To think i had almost thrown it away a few times…. I was so thankful i hadn’t.
NEVER EVER let someone follow you out to your car like that. The most likely times you could be attacked are getting into your car and getting through your front door. Go back into the store and ask for a worker to walk with you out. If someone is getting close tell them in a firm voice “you need to keep your distance”. Always be overly aware of your surroundings when alone, never turn your back if you see someone, always keep distance as far as possible. People can tell when they know you know your being followed and trying to avoid it.
I bought a round 10$ diamond ring from the flea market. It is a pretty light lavender color with white square diamonds around it. During certain lightings, it seems to turn dark blue or light pink. A lot of people have asked me if it’s a real diamond and some people can’t stop gazing at it lol. I don’t think it’s real but it’s very pretty to me. I wear it all the time lol
Don’t ever let a jeweler “keep” your ring for several days. Don’t ever let a jeweler take your jewelry into the “back room” for appraisal. Don’t ever let your jewelry out of your sight. A good Jeweler can appraise your jewelry in front of you & unscrupulous jewelers change out stones all the time! Count the pearls on your necklace before you turn it in to be restrung & have another jeweler appraise and size the pearls before you turn your necklace in to be restrung.
45 years ago a friend of mine bought a purl and stone layered bracelet for a garage sale for $5.00. It was nice. A friend of ours told here to have it checked out at a jewelry store. She did, come to find out the bracelet was made of salt water purls and diamonds. That it was worth back then for over $30,000.00. You never know what you can pick up at yard, garage or estate sales.
Paul Harvey run a story years ago about a couple in New York who had gotten married, They were poor at the time and could not afford a diamond ring for her so they went to a pawn shop to find something mark their wedding day. The only piece they could find was a necklace. Years later they wanted to get the piece cleaned thinking it was just for remembrance sake, taking it to a jeweler, they let him see it and after looking at it asked them very excitedly if they wanted to sell it.Puzzled at his offer they asked him what was the big deal.Come to find out the necklace had a history, it was a gift from Napoleon to Maria Anntoinette.
Similar thing happened to a friends mother. She bought a sewing box at a yard sale. While going through the box she found a large ring. She gave it to us kids to play with. It laid around the house a couple years until a friend of hers told her she thought it might be real. She had it appraised and it was a very large real diamond. Luckily we didn’t lose it!
“She went to the flea market where she was walking, as she always walks while at the flea market, which she likes to go to for walks. While walking, she found that the flea market was indeed a great place for walking, which she continued to do this time as she did the other times that she was walking at the flea market. But this time was different. But it was also the same because she walked just as she had the previous times that she walked while at the flea market…”
Teacher: For finals you will write a 5,000 word essay Me: One day a woman, who we will keep her name annonymous for obvious reasons, went shopping. She usually goes shopping at Marshalls but today she decided to shop at Burlington. Upon entering the Burlington store she passed by each section carefully……
I had an old Schwinn bicycle made for a child and it always looked expensive to me and I later found out that it was one of only 100 left in the world and it is worth a lot for being jyst a bicycle I still have it and had it restored to original condition. It’s amazing how sometimes other people’s trash really is just a treasure in disguise lol.
For my 18th birthday my mum bought me a second hand ring from an antique dealer. She paid around £50 for the ring which was a black opal surrounded by small diamonds. I wore it all the time and it became tired looking and because the gold was high, the ring lost its shape. I threw it in my jewelry box and forgot about it for 20 odd years. More recently I took it to a good jewelers and asked if he could re-shape it. He did this for me without charging me but he told me the opal needed cleaning up and that would cost me around £300. I laughed and said, that’s more than the rings worth. He coughed and said,” I think you’d be surprised. A ring like this would fetch over £5,000″. Not a millionaire but that old ring turned out to be a very good investment.
I never would’ve sold it even if cash was a need… that was a keeper. You can always find a way to make a few bucks, but rarely can you easily buy an $850K antique 26 karat diamond. I too, bought a ring at a thrift for $7, but its diamond value was only $2,800. That one I did sell as I felt no attachment to it. A 26 karat would be another story. If only that ring could talk.
I purchased a pendant in Barcelona Flee Market for merely 104$…. After about a year i got it appraised and surprisingly i sold it 855000 USD. BUT SOMETIMES YOU RUN OUT OF LUCK……….. Purchased another jewellery item in Greece from an antique shop for 2000 USD only to find put it was not even worth 200$… 😂😂😂😂
I bought an opal and crystal pendant at a thrift shop for $1.99 I did, however, have an idea as it was in 18K, which was marked with the old European numerals 750. Yup, the opals and diamonds are real and it’s not worth $800K, but worth a couple thousand. It’s from the 1930s France. How it got to a thrift shop in Connecticut, I’ll never know, but I like to imagine. I say this to suggest thrifters learn the old hallmarks and assay marks. You never know, right?
Things like this happen all the time.I remember a flea market in Florida We’re a friend of mine found a French seti with 2 matching chairs. They were all covered in white paint And torn Worn out Material. My friend sent them to Atlanta Georgia to have them bring back the wood and have new material. long story short they used to belong to Maria Antonette.
