I just finished reading Richard Williams book, Black And White: The Way I see It, and based on what I read of his life, I totally understand why he didn’t attend that marriage, and her marriage doesn’t make sense to me either. Serena, in the film, Venus And Serena, first said she’d never date a white guy. That she’s not attracted to them. Then at a point when she’s telling one of her white trainers this, the trainer reminds her of white guys that she’s dated in the past. Then she admits that she’s dated white guys, but again, she says she prefers black men way more, so it was an utter surprise to me when she married a white guy. Her father, Richard Williams, didn’t just experience one or two extremely racist things, he experienced the most extremes of it for decades. He was almost killed, not just insulted, but KILLED on a number of occasions, just for being black and not bowing down to their insults. His is an experience that most blacks in America, today, couldn’t begin to imagine. For better or worse, I side with Richard Williams. Serena obviously can marry whom ever she wants, but I side with Richard in his decision not to witness it. And before someone says it, no I’m not a racist….some of my best friends were white……
