Did Tom Hanks Produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding?

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a comedy drama romance, began as a one-woman stage show in Los Angeles in 1997. Star and screenwriter Nia Vardalos discovered the show when her wife, Rita Wilson, dragged him to a performance of her L.A. play. Hanks and Rita Wilson took a risk on the story, which became one of the greatest Cinderella stories at the box office. The indie based on Vardalos’ one-woman show enchanted producers Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, who ultimately underwrote about half of the film’s budget.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 was released on September 8, 2023, with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson still serving as producers. The film, which never hit No. 1 at the box office, was produced by several people, including Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. The story revolves around a young Greek woman falling in love with a non-Greek and struggling to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her identity.

The sequel, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” is also being produced by Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Gary Goetzman. The film has brought audiences joy for 21 years and is set to release on September 8, 2023. The original cast members, except for Michael Constantine, will return for the sequel.

In summary, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a successful romantic comedy that began as a one-woman stage show in Los Angeles and was later adapted into a movie.

  • What I love is that you don’t just have to be Greek to relate to this move. This is every ethnic family, and it’s wonderful. This is why so many people love this movie! I’m first generation Serbian, and guess what. My family is loud, makes way too much food, and is always in my business. I love them!

  • I am a huge fan of the first movie. One of the things I loved about it was its honest humor. I’m looking forward to the new one! It seems to be turning out really well, but I hope it’s the last BFGW movie. This doesn’t need to turn into a franchise, because I feel like if they start doing a ton of these they will lose their value.

  • Just saw it in theaters and was pleasantly surprise. Although not as good as the first one (for me) it was very nice to see the whole cast come back together for a nostalgic trip. You just have to sit down and watch it as a light hearted flick rather than the big blockbuster productions we’ve been getting. I will admit that there seemed to be a little more touchy feely scenes in here than the first one, which almost made it surpass the first for me (almost but not quite). Can still relate to the family too. It’s not exactly Greek culture but more of an ethnic family culture in America. We’re all guilty of it. Irish families, German, Italian, and for me my polish family. We’re just proud of our heritage :). Overall I would say yes give this movie a go and don’t overanalyze it. Just see it as an escape to remind you of some of the simpler things in life.

  • The first one was the great underdog movie of all time. The critics hated it, but it just kept making money week after week, for months with no marketing. It made 200 million profit, a lot of it going to Tom Hanks. This trailer is actually better than the first movie’s trailer. Might be another big fat Check for Hanks.

  • I watched this movie in theatres today, it’s honestly amazing, if you like the trailer but are questioning perusal the movie, you know from a direct source now, it’s great, hilarious and you should really watch it! =) Take my advice! And Aunt Thea’s advice too :P, you’re in for a lot of funny surprises

  • HAHA! PAUSE 1:35 Ian’s teacher friend, he was catch on the dance at the wedding by one of the bridemaids….remember THEY RE TOGETHER and both has the wedding band (they’re sitting on the left upfront)…and Thula’s sister has 5 kids…3 grown, one baby and pregnant by the last scene of 1st movie… Ohhhhhh and Nico is sitting in the back of the bridemaid he was with at the wedding. Ian’s parent are there too, WOW this is going to be great again! Thx Mr. Hanks for bringing this marvelous continuation.

  • I love the first movie cause it was a like a horror movie for me. Growing up in a greek family…. is exactly like this. But… less funny! The part in the first movie where Gus is saying, “Is he a good boy, I don’t know? Does he come from a good family, I don’t know?” My father said those exact same thing when my Sister got married and got mad the same way! lol

  • I just have to say this… Nia Vardalos is one of the most attractive women on the face of God’s green earth. I do recall her making a television series that was based on the original My Big Fat Greek Wedding but it was short-lived and didn’t go over well. Hopefully this sequel will be just as good if not better.

  • “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” are 2 movies about a Greek wedding. Nia Vardalos plays Toula. Nia Vardalos looks like Tina Fey. Tina Fey was in Mean Girls. Amanda Seyfried was in Mean Girls. Amanda Seyfried was in Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia is a movie about a wedding in Greece. COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT!

  • I think the trailer doesn’t quite do the movie justice–the movie is better than this. It’s nice that the whole movie isn’t in the trailer, too, and there are jokes and plot points that you don’t see so it’s not a big give-away here. The movie did a good job at referencing the familiar, classic jokes without relying on them to be the entirety of the movie. I loved spotting the mini bundt cakes with flowers in the center in the Dancing Zorba restaurant, for instance, that were a quiet nod to the big bundt cake joke in the first movie. Seeing this felt like getting together with old friends and I laughed out loud in parts. Definitely loved it and would see it again in an instant!

  • I saw this movie just when It was released, I thought it was comical then a bit less the second time.. However attending to your own parents, and grandparents wedding it’s a big celebration for any family specially for Greeks… You begin to see the patterns of cultural behavior from daugther Toulsa to grandaugther Paris., and the only way of keeping the legacy and authencity of their race is to hold the daughers close to the family very unlike American views., but then some views grows on you as you see the honesty of love for each other as family.. Super recommend it! #UniversalPictures #MyBigFatGreekWedding2 #NiaValardos #MichaelConstantine #JohnCorbett #LainieKazan #AndreaMartin #2016 #2023 ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
