Do Engagement Rings Scratch Easily?

Engagement and wedding rings are not immune to everyday wear and tear, but they can still get scratched over time. Platinum rings are less likely to scratch due to their durability, and small scrapes or nicks can be repaired with polishing. However, gold and silver are more susceptible to scratches due to various factors such as abrasion, overtightening, or dropping the jewelry.

Tungsten is the most scratch-resistant material for wedding rings, while platinum is not a hard metal. It is 4 – 4.5 on the MOHs scale of hardness, making it more susceptible to scratches. Amethyst is a seven on the MOHs scale and can scratch platinum, while pure gold is 2.5 on the MOHs scale.

Tungsten rings are made with tungsten, titanium, platinum, palladium, stainless steel, or cobalt, and some are even ceramic. Tungsten has been labeled as the most scratch-resistant material for wedding rings, while platinum is not. Rhodium, a liquid metal from the platinum group, does scratch and fade away with time, with an average lifespan of 5 years.

Precious metals are softer than many surfaces, so light scratches and scuffs will develop on any solid gold or platinum piece as soon as you start wearing it. The main culprit for ring-scratching is other metals like keys or door handles.

While diamonds are harder than most jewelry metals, they can be scratched a lot easier than you might expect. Tungsten carbide rings are unlikely to get scratches, but with hardness comes brittleness. When a stone is set higher than the band of the ring, it has a higher chance of getting scratched.

  • Wow! This worked soooo well! Thank you! I went rock climbing the other day and failed to take my 18mm wide gold band off. I scratched it pretty bad and could even feel a fairly irritating rough spot on the ring. I thought I was going to have to live with it until I could get it to the jeweler, but, NO, it is looking like the day I bought it. I am just so flabbergasted that it was this simple. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and expertise!

  • 😁🥰Thank you Garry I tried the jeweler and they said they could not get rid of the scratches on my anniverary band. That the scratches was there to stay. I thought it was no hope. It worked!!! I use a metal fairly new screwdriver to get rid of the scratches on my ring it really works. Thank you so much! I looked at several articles and also google looking for a miracle. Now I don’t have to drive my husband crazy, and I did not need his help I can do this myself. I can’t wait to share this with my hubby and family. Awesome!! Also I used a micro cloth to buff the ring what a shine.

  • Sceptical at first.. But after reading the overwhelming positive comments on this technique actually workin, I gave it a try. I dropped my grandma’s precious and sentimental ring and it fell on uneven concrete. I immediately dropped my shopping bags to inspect the ring.. A few visible dents plus scratches… I was upset. Immediately regret holding the bags with one hand whilst trying to put the ring on my other hand which was already loaded holding a small gym equipment bag and on top of that….walking. Always put things down and take care of your sentimental valuables ladies and gentlemen. On the train home.. I was looking up ring repairs. Hatton gardens (London jewellery central) stores were charging me with the excess of £150 for repair and they also confirmed I would indeed lose ring metal.. They said yes.. Even if its a little… I don’t want that. If the ring is 3.93 grams.. I want 3.93 grams or more.. They said they wouldn’t add more silver, gold, platinum, etc to make up the losses during repair. I was thinking that’s crazy. You want me to pay £150 to lose ring metal. Crazy.. Wooooooow wooow wwwwwoooowww Wow. It really really works.. I use the screwdriver too because its the recommended tool to use from this article. I want to thank you very much for this article. I spent maybe 10 mins to 15mins using this technique and the ring is good as new.

  • This is GREAT! I just learned this technique for platinum, and I was just thinking in my head, logically it should be the same for gold, though undoubtedly different materials (like tungsten carbide required for Pt burnishing). My question is does do you keep the same amount of pressure the whole time from start to finish, or do you apply less as the surface begins to shine?? THANK YOU so much for sharing this! Just what I needed

  • Thanks for this, I’ve only had my ring about 2 weeks and already got some scuff marks on it which I could not ignore I was a little reluctant to try it but I gave it a go, and am very happy to say it does work, I could probably do a little more as I can still see a slight area where the scuff was but it is a lot better.
