Do I Need My Marriage License For A Passport?

To change your name on a passport, you must provide identification and proof of citizenship, such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, marriage certificate, I.D. card, military I.D., or previous U.S. passport that isn’t altered or damaged. If you are getting married abroad, the marriage may be registered upon request at the competent Registrar’s Office in Germany. If your passport was issued more than a year ago, you need to apply for a passport renewal and pay the appropriate fee.

In Germany, you can get married in any registry office, provided at least one of you has a valid passport. To apply for a new passport, you should book an appointment for a consultation with your local court. In most cases, you must file a petition with your local court to change your name. U.S. citizens taking a closed loop-cruise can usually travel using a birth certificate and a non-expired government-issued ID with photo, name, and date of birth (if 16 years old or older).

If your new married surname is hyphenated, you do not need a new passport. If you are getting married in Wisconsin, you must first apply for a marriage license, which costs $50.00 to $120.00 and must be used within 30 days. If you are getting married in Michigan, you must first apply for a marriage license, which costs $20.00 to $30.00 and must be used within 33 days.

If your name has changed due to marriage, you will need to provide an official copy of the Marriage License or a Court Order. Supporting documents include your name change document (such as marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) if your current name is not the same as the name on your most recent passport.

Do I have to change name on passport after marriage USA?

Technically, the answer is no, you dont have to complete a passport name change due to marriage right after saying “I do.” In fact, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says that as long as you bring proof of your name change (like a marriage certificate) with you when you travel, youll be OK, at least when returning to the U.S.

That said, other countries may have different rules and regulations. So before you soar off to distant lands, its a good idea to check entry requirements so you arrive prepared. Check online or reach out to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to determine the best course of action.

If all the destinations in question accept a marriage certificate alongside your old passport, leaving your passport in your unmarried name is a nice option to have, especially if you have travel scheduled soon after your wedding (like a honeymoon), since passport processing times can be painfully long.

  • Just so people are aware: The cost of the passport has gone up since this article as has the forecasted wait time. It’s currently $130 for the book, $30 for the optional card, plus $35 acceptance fee. The $35 goes to the place you go to in person to, the remaining fees go to the U.S. State Department. Also, the current wait time is forecast as 8-11 weeks, but they are currently running about 8 weeks, if not a little less. I fully recommend getting the card if you have not upgraded your state ID to Real ID standards. The card is Real ID compliant for when the new ID requirements for domestic air travel and government buildings finally kick in next year.

  • Thank you! I just recently got mine after 1 month of waiting and didn’t have to pay for expedited service. The employees commended me for having everything ready on my appointment. For those who are perusal and reading some comments, take your time to understand and prepare everything. I can guarantee you that it will all go smooth for as long as you have everything ready and prepared.

  • Thank you for this and other informative articles. I got naturalized in May 2021 and applied for passport and passport card on expedited service Oct 22. I mentioned I intended to travel in 8 weeks. \r \r It got approved/issued/printed on Nov 19 and delivered on Nov 25. I still haven’t got my Passport Card and Original Natrualization Cert but they must be on the way in separate mails. \r \r The only negative is the their status page. I gave my email and phone number for notifications on status changes but got nothing at any stage. I had to fill the status page every time and track status. It only had 3 status changes – accepted, processing, approved. Even USCIS tracking system is way better, detailed and used to send me text/email messages. Also, it would be nice if they gave USPS tracking details once approved. Thanks again for helping other immigrants and citizens.

  • The appointments are so backed up where I live. I had no choice but to do a walk in at one location that was the only one available within a 50 mile radius. When I got there the line was all the way out the door. Literally. I sat in line for 6+ hours. While in line I was talking to the people in line and they informed how they had appointments at different locations but they canceled on them smh. But thank you for all the information. This helped me so much. The guy at the window was happy how I came prepared. I took my photo at walgreens. I paid $649 for me, my wife, and my 9 year old son. I was able to pay for everything with a debit card. I got expedited for all three of us with standard shipping. But the expedited is 5 to 7 weeks.

  • This is actually great timing for me. My daughter and I are about to apply for our first passports, and this was a great walk through of how we’ll need to do it, without making beginner errors. We won’t need to expedite, but look forward to having them at the ready for future plans. Thank you for posting this! Also- I really appreciate your straight to the point, concise, but friendly delivery style.

  • Thanks Maneesha. This is my experience: I live in the City so i had to do a bit of a maneuvering to get an early two day appointment at this post office (45mins drive away but worth it). Smooth, easy and very professional service. I applied on 4/28/2022 Passport card arrived on 5/19/2022 Passport arrived on 5/21/2022 (exactly 3weeks). I used the expedited service. Thanks.

  • I was born an American citizen, 20 years old, and I still don’t have a passport lol. To be fair I never felt the need to have one since this country is so big and has pretty much all kinds of climates, terrain, even different laws and etc but I’d love to travel outside the country soon so thanks so much for this great article!

  • I was born in the US. Just applied for my first passport ever and choose standard delivery since I am not traveling until May 2022. The whole process was fast. I had everything filled out. Some post offices will also do the photo for you for $15. Mine did and i choose to do it there. I just choose the small book as I dont do a lot of international travel. Just have a trip I have been dreaming of and needed one.

  • It should be noted that many passport centers, including post offices, can also do the photos as well, you just need to select the photo option when booking your appointment. In these days of Covid skipping going to someplace else to get the photos first might make it worth it to do everything at once.

  • Renewed my passport today. This article was helpful. Good thing the post office I went to took my picture. I forgot I had an extra picture from the first passport I had. It looked way better than the one I have today. It’s cool though. It was kind of bitter sweet that my old passport had to be stapled to the packet.

  • Hi, thank you so much for this article. Being said that we are in a pandemic my grandmother had a heart attack and is having by pass surgery on the 18th of December and she wants me to be by her side I just found today. When I called the travel state gov they said it’s not guaranteed that they can get me an appointment even though I have a doctors note and it’s a life-death emergency. She advised me to go to post office and expedite it with supporting documents and hope for the best? I’m distraught and don’t know what to do.

  • I got my passport in 2 weeks. I applied for my child supposedly expedited but it’s still being processed as of today. Lesson learned: even when they tell you that you can apply simultaneously with your child, don’t do it if you do not have the certificate of citizenship. It will save you the hassle of worrying for what they need. It should have been a straightforward application but I guess that they love to complicate things just like US politics.

  • Depending on where you live, you might just be able to walk in to the post office and they will take you. When I got my passport I just went with all the required things, eight days later I got my passport in the mail. It came so fast I thought the State Department had a problem with my photo, and sent me a rejection notice. Edit: I did not pay the expedition fee.

  • Its takes a really long time to get them to process your passport. I sent my passport for renewal on Feb 24, I get a status update Apr6 saying they received it and are reviewing, another email in the afternoon saying its been approved and I should be getting my passport back Apr 12. If you dont want to wait almost 2 months, do expediated for an extra $60.

  • I suggest getting the passport card. Not only is it acceptable ID pretty much anywhere they need one, it’s a good backup in the event you lose your passport while abroad and need to visit the consulate for a replacement. For minors, the card is probably even better because they tend to not have IDs other than a school one (if even that). For me, it makes sense to have the card also because my parents live close to Canada and an impromptu visit across the border at Niagara Falls isn’t uncommon, and if my kids go visit, they can have the passport card ready if needed. I use my card all the time (about every 4 days) when I fly and the TSA never has an issue. (My driver’s license isn’t as easily accessible in my wallet but the passport card satisfies all TSA requirements.) Plus, for $15, it’s similar in cost to a state ID or license and it’s sturdier.

  • Hello Maneesha, thanks for sharing this so easy-to-follow tutorial. My question to you is: My Oath Ceremony was scheduled for February the 18th, 2022. Am I allowed to fill out the application form online in advance and schedule an appointment at the authorized facility right after my Oath Ceremony? If not, what would be in your opinion the best way to gain time ahead and be proactive to avoid waiting time until the ceremony happens, then applying for the passport? Thanks once again for your help.

  • The process is soooo annoying! I had everything except a photo copy of the front & back of my ID. Good thing I watched your article & was able to get copies made before I arrived. Thanks for the tips! You definitely saved me from having to go back. Considering I barely was able to find the appointment I had, you saved my arse. lol

  • Hello Maneesha. Thank you for the article, very helpful. But I have a question and hope you can help with an answer. Do you know if it is possible to apply for a passport from another state? I’m from NYC and will have a naturalization oath ceremony on Oct 22nd. But there are no available appointments in USPS on that day and I will have to leave the city day after.

  • Hi Maneesha, As part of the naturalization ceremony, I changed my name. They gave me a court order for name change, along with the naturalization certificate. When I send the original (and copy) of naturalization certification with passport application form, should I also send the original of the name change court order?

  • Latest Update as of 10/2/2023: Timelines are now 8-11 weeks for routine; 5-7 weeks for Expedited if you have applied after October 2, 2023. Previous timelines of 10-13 weeks for routine; 7-9 weeks for expedited are still correct if you have applied between 3/24-10/1/23. These timelines are only valid once the state department receives your application and does not include the time it takes for the acceptance facility to send in your passport nor does it include the time it takes for you to receive it. It takes up to two weeks for the State Department to receive your Application for your passport and up to two weeks for them to send it to your place once it is printed.

  • This is the article I watch to get my passport. It has all the steps in it. The one step that I would add is that I would make sure that the post office does passport photos and if they don’t you can go to Walgreens or like Walmart to get your photo for the passport and don’t wear white for the passport photo

  • Just want to point out some of the info is irrelevant in 2022 so kinda miss leading. I just went to applied my passport last week and there is really no way to get it in 10 days during COVID. First there is no next day appointment available in my area. The earliest one within 20miles is 4 weeks later. Secondly, the standard process time increased to 8-10 weeks. The faster processing time with additional $60 is now 6-8 weeks listed on the official website. I did not apply the emergency one since I don’t have an urgent travel plan so I can’t say if that reminds true. Except that, great article with clear instructions and infos!

  • I had to mail mine in. I did not qualify for the online renewal. They received my passport on the 12/15 and I have the routine service (6-9 weeks). It’s now 1/30 and my application still says “in process”. I did pay for the 1-2 day shipping for them to return it so hopefully receive it soon. It’s going on week 7 now. I’ll keep you all posted.

  • For the appointments I do recommend to go directly if you are like me good lucky I was there at 9:45 they say wait and I wait the lady help us with everything I need plus taking pictures and even did my son same day but I still need to do my girls but I need the father authorized so I just waiting for the documents for be filled up so I could do their process … I did book and card and pictures I cost me 212.10 I did pay with card .

  • Hi Maneesha. I saw your articles today and they are helpful. I had quick two questions. I’m naturalizing next week and was wondering if I can go to social security office to update same day as I booked an appt for passport at post office for next day? Second, I am Sikh and I wear a turban, I guess I need a statement about religion and all. Third, I want to make cashiers check, so for expedited and 1-2 days delivery, standard book, how much should I make for? Thanks millions. Terry

  • Hi, Thank you for sharing such an amazing article with us. I want to travel to my country but it takes 12 weeks even I choose expedite process to get my daughters passport as she is a newborn. I see there are more options as to get a passport within 72hrs but they required a proof of life and death emergency or traveling. I don’t have any emergency just want to travel with my daughter to meet up her dad as he is not in USA. I want your help what should I do? Thank you.

  • Very helpful article! I have one follow up question though: if my legal spelling has changed during naturalization, can I still get a passport right away because the certificate us both proof of citizenship AND proof of ID, or do I need to go to the RMV first to get a new ID before the passport application ? I’m assuming the naturalization certificate is both proof of identity and citizenship, right ?

  • Hello, this is my first time applying for a United States Passport. And my question to you is, first and foremost I’m a United States Citizen since 1978, never applied for the U.S. Passport. How is it that I get proof of naturalization if my document is lost at what cost to replace it? And what do I do with it? Do I just follow the prompts once I get a replacement?

  • My 24 yr old boyfriend is an Italian and he lives in Italy, he’ll be visiting me in Texas early 2024. He’s been traveling since he was young and already has a passport, but I never been on a Plane before. I’m 23 btw 😅 And I want to visit him in Italy this Summer. So I really need to get this done and not stress about it, so thank you for this useful article. ☺❤

  • Hi Maneesha ! I receive my passport and passport card but I have not receive my original certificate! Do you know how long do I have to wait because it’s been like 14 days !! 😬 I’m worried and another questions I have trip outside of the us but I’m still waiting for my documents to change my status with social security office do you think I will have any problem traveling outside because of that ? Thank you
