The Bride of the Water God is a South Korean drama series directed by Kim Byung Soo, based on a webcomic written by Yoon Mi Kyung. It tells the story of a girl named Soah who is sacrificed by her village to the Water God in exchange for rain. The Water God is upset and a long drought has been devastating the village people. In order to appease the god, they marry Soah off to him by sacrificing her to the lake.
The series stars Shin Se Kyung as a pragmatic neuropsychiatrist who carries a tremendous financial burden to Soah. Moo Ra, a goddess from the Water Kingdom, loves Ha Baek but doesn’t appreciate So Ah stealing him away. Bi Ryum, a wind god, has always had a one-sided crush on Moo Ra despite knowing her feelings for Ha Baek.
The story revolves around a girl who slips back in time to a different era, where she finds herself in a place that seems like Japan from ancient times. A powerful clan takes her in, but the reason for their kindness is that they intend to sacrifice her to the Water God.
The series ends with a perfect inversion of how it began, with characters dealing with the pain and separation of growing apart and differing affections. The characters face challenges in their relationship, such as the Water God’s curse and the consequences of their actions.
The Bride of the Water God is considered an ongoing manga, with 148 chapters, the last being published on 9/19/15. The series explores themes of love, family, and the consequences of a relationship between a mortal female and a god.
