Does The Church Register Your Marriage?

To be recognized by UK law, a marriage must be signed in a legal marriage register, either in church, a register office, or a registered venue. Many parishes and dioceses require proof of registration for six months or more before the wedding date. Marriages between Catholics and non-Christians are non-sacramental, and with permission, a priest or deacon may perform baptismal ceremonies.

The Act recognizes five systems of marriage: Civil Marriages, Christian Marriages, Hindu Marriages, Customary Marriages, and Islamic. A registrar must carry out or be present at the ceremony, and the cost of a registrar is £46 at a register office. Catholics are welcome to have a Church of England wedding, but a Catholic priest can be involved in the service. If one of you is a Roman Catholic and want the Roman Catholic Church to recognize your marriage, you will need to apply for one.

There is no fee for registration or correction of errors on a marriage certificate, but fees are charged for copies of certificates. If you get married in Queensland, your authorised marriage celebrant has 14 days to submit your marriage to be registered. If you get married in another state or country, your marriage needs to be registered with the interstate or overseas.

Church of England marriages do not require a license, but in some circumstances, you might need to apply for one. Both parties must complete legal preliminaries through the Church via the calling of Banns or by giving notice of marriage at a register office.

How does marriage reflect the Church?

What is marriage? Marriage is a union between a man and a woman from different families. This union is like the union of God with his people, who are his bride, and Christ with his church. This union is based on God’s call to lifelong sexual faithfulness (see Chapters 11–15 in Christopher Ash, Marriage: Sex in the Service of God). The Bible’s definition can be summarized as follows.

Consent. Marriage is a choice. The Bible says rape and forced marriage are wrong (e.g., 2 Samuel 13:14). A man and a woman must agree to get married. With this consent, they agree to be sexually open with each other (1 Cor. 7:2–4). Such consent should be given with an understanding of the nature of the institution.

Public. Marriage is a public union. While the intimacy is private, the nature of the union is public. The man and woman promise to be faithful to each other until one of them dies.

Unmarried couples are unclear about what they have agreed to. They often misunderstand each other. But when a man and a woman marry, there’s no doubt. They have publicly promised to be faithful to each other for the rest of their lives. In a healthy society, married couples get support. A married couple has a social cost if one of them breaks the marriage.

One man and one woman: heterosexual. Marriage is between a man and a woman. This is how God made us. A society may call a relationship between two people of the same sex “marriage,” but God says it can never be so.

One man and one woman: monogamous. Marriage is between a man and a woman. The Old Testament says that polygamy is allowed, but it doesn’t say it’s good. Jesus says that a man and a woman are meant to be together (e.g. Matt. 19:5–6).

From different families. The Bible says incest is wrong. This is sexual intimacy between people who are too closely related. Leviticus 18 is the clearest and longest Old Covenant text on this topic. 1 Corinthians 5 says it is wrong for a man to have sex with his stepmother. Christians have not always agreed about the reasons for the incest prohibitions or about what is and is not incest. The reason is to protect the family from confusion when someone views a close relative as a sexual partner. If this is right, the extent of the incest prohibitions may depend on what is considered close family in a particular culture (see Christopher Ash, Marriage: Sex in the Service of God, 266–271).

The pattern of Christ with his church. Three New Testament passages address husbands and wives. Ephesians 5:22–33; Colossians 3:18–19; 1 Peter 3:1–7. These passages teach that husbands should be self-sacrificing leaders and wives should submit to their husbands. Many people and some churches today do not like this pattern. We should start with the idea of “order” or “arrangement,” from which the word “submission” comes. In the New Testament, this concept is applied to (a) the submission of all things to God and to Christ, (b) the submission of Christ to God, (c) the submission of the believer to God, (d) the submission of the believer to the civil authorities, and (e) the submission of slaves to masters.9) Submitting to leaders (Heb. 13:17), parents (Eph. 6:1), and husbands (Eph. 5:24). Slaves should not submit to their masters. This is not based on creation and the Bible says slavery is wrong. A wife should submit to her husband willingly, as an act of devotion to God. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. This pattern is beautiful and life-giving. A husband can subvert it by being tyrannical, a wife can subvert it by being passive, a rebellious wife can subvert it, and a husband can abdicate his responsibilities.

What are the rules for Protestant marriage?
