The village has been a popular holiday spot for years. The Haven Hotel was built by the Malcomsons, who were involved in the American Civil War. The family owned a cotton mill in Portlaw and imported a lot of cotton from America. The Fisherman’s Hall was also built by this family. Lord Waterford gave the village and the park to the public in 1926. The park and the woods have many beautiful walks. The Trustees look after these areas for the people of Dunmore East. You are welcome to enjoy them. Another nice place nearby is Woodstown with a beautiful sandy beach. Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis vacationed here in 1967. From Woodstown, about three miles on, you’ll see the ruins of Geneva Barracks by the roadside. These buildings were built in the 18th century for a group of Swiss silver workers who had to leave their country because of their Huguenot beliefs. The building was used as a prison during the 1798 rebellion. It’s in a popular ballad called “The Croppy Boy.” The Catholic church of Killea was built around 1817. It is likely that Father Thomas Hearn, the parish priest, also built a school at the same time. John Sheehan was teaching in Killea in 1821, even though he lived in Dunmore. There was no school in Killea in 1814. The 1824 Education Report says the school in Killea where John Sheehan taught was built of stone walls, mud mortar, and thatched. We also have six more bedrooms in the Garden Rooms, just a few steps from the main house. All our bedrooms have been recently renovated and refurbished to a high standard. Some rooms are upstairs in the main house and we don’t have a lift.
