Marriage, birth, and death records in Iowa are called Vital Records and can be requested through various methods such as telephone, in-person, online, or postal service. The official registration of births, deaths, and marriages began on July 1, 1880, and all original records are on file with the Iowa HHS, Bureau of Vital Statistics. Local registrars maintain records of birth, death, and marriages in county recorders offices, such as Scott County.

Iowa county marriage records have been kept since about 1835 and may provide information about names, ages, races, residences, occupations, birthplaces, maiden name of wife, marriage date and place, parents’ names, and the name of the person who performed the marriage. To obtain marriage records, eligible persons can query the Bureau of Vital Statistics office of the County Recorder’s office. Non-certified copies of marriage records are available for a fee of $5.00 per record.
