How Do You Fix Trust Issues In A Marriage?

Trust can be rebuilt in a marriage by being honest and open about the reasons for the loss of trust. It is essential to remain in the relationship and have discipline to prevent a repeat of the breach. Trust is an essential component of a relationship, and it is crucial to be true to one’s word and follow through with actions. To rebuild trust, one must listen to the other person’s anger and hurt feelings, empathize with them, and ask what is needed to prevent a recurrence.

To address trust issues, couples should acknowledge the lie, offer a mature apology, listen to their spouse and validate their emotions, ask what your partner needs from you to get their trust back, and be honest with yourself. Pre-marriage counseling can help restore communication skills and teach you to deal with trust issues in marriages.

Restoring trust takes time and requires understanding the principles of forgiveness and trust. Counseling can help with the decision-making process. Research in 2020 revealed the most frequently given reasons for divorce from a sample of over 2,000 people, including lack of love/intimacy, communication issues, and lack of sympathy/respect/trust.

Frequent doubts and the persistent need for reassurance can be signs of profound trust issues, possibly originating from past betrayals or individual insecurities. Addressing these concerns is crucial for rebuilding the loss of trust in a relationship. Emotional distance can also help restore trust by listening without being defensive.

  • broken heart’s are a part of life! Do we want to be with someone because of their looks(charm) or their great personality? you’re not the only one who is impressed with that person. Does that person act flirty around someone else? this is why people need to know each other much better! We Cannot control other people, only ourselves! Real affection is not an invesment! No one OWES us anything, We owe ourselves

  • This does not cover broken promises or violating boundaries. If you ask someone to not be aggressive to you or use aggressive intimidation tactics towards you at any point, this does not mean you have an “unrealistic expectation”. It means that the issue lies within them and them only since they chose those actions.I would love to hear him speak on this.

  • “is it’s beneficial for them and not for you… let them do it. ” Many people with a little bit of tolerance can accept this idea, only if the consequences of the bad behavior only concern the person who made the bad choice. The problem arises when one person, by lying and hiding their behavior, or acting dishonestly, does something that makes both people bear the consequences.

  • Just want to say that… Its of course not fine or ok when someone promises you and you believe on them and then they just don’t love you now … And then they send this article to you and be like its all your fault not theirs. So you did your best and all the best this sad and suffering time will pass too. 🌼🌈

  • Goodebumps bro.. Right now I am in a situation where my parents don’t support me they want to send me away from them, just as Sadhguru said they don’t want me to be with my boyfriend because the society won’t accept it(for their own benefit) but they won’t understand my point of view and my feelings…

  • Apparently Sadhguru is unaware of the Aids epidemic or the myriad of other std’s. Betrayal comes from the breaking of accepted agreements. Saying that it is because you wanted someone to behave differently infers that there was no agreement in the first place. When I have been betrayed I leave that person to their own life for they are not who I thought they were in the first place.

  • Yes sir if we love someone that doesn’t mean that our partner must do what we allow them to do or whatever we love to do they also do like this. But if we really love someone than we must let them free to do what they love to do and we must not force them to do according to our way and attitude. Gd aftnoon sir

  • What if our beloved supports one’s enemy ? What about backstabbing ? Isn’t this a basic ethic of a person he/she should possess ? I believe your pleasure shouldn’t cause pain to others, is this too much of me to expect this ? A person shouldn’t put his/her family at stake for their pleasure and happiness.

  • It’s too hard to accept at first when my husband planned for a holiday visit to another country for months secretly without consulting me in his decision Making. I felt too bad but their family members were very happy, I was left broke and a small baby, jobless and frustrated, I came to know my boundaries later

  • Once, my friend who was friends with me for 10 years (the friendship was the strongest one untill middle school) betrayed me and then when Karma got her, the new best friend of hers betrayed her and made a teacher get mad at her and I was there, teling the teacher that was not her fault (The teacher was close to me) but then when we got home I called her to stop crying up just because of some idiots then we were the old us for a little time like 4 months then she got another one (which was pretty nice) but I realized that the fault is not the new besties of hers, the fault was her because of not knowing thewhat we were worth, Im still trying to get her back.. I hope she understands it one day untill it is too late.. Thanks for reading.

  • This was not really accurate, the question is what do we do when we get betrayed on, cheated on… so people can do whatever they want too, and one pointing that out, or acknowledging it is setting an expectation ? Isn’t trust and loyalty like the bare minimum, that an enlightened one should strive for. Now stuff like that, happens, understood. But how do we protect our hearts and minds… didn’t really answer that. People fall into depression from stuff like this.

  • This is not realistic answer. How can someone be okay with getting trust broken or getting cheated? How can it could be something the other wants to do. It’s exploitation of freedom we give them and how could it be okay? How can someone not expect the other one to be loyal? In other article sadhguru has said build your circle of trusted people whom you can say yes anytime. But what when after so many years they betray? Is it their freedom? Or we shouldn’t expect them to be atleast loyal?

  • @sadhguru is it unrealistic to believe that if a person can do all things that are beneficial to them and by loving them it means that you allow them to do all things they find beneficial to them. Doesn’t that mean that if they “love” YOU they will not always do all things that they think are beneficial to them because they LOVE you, they care about how some action might make you feel? Because they have the intelligence to realzie that every feeling they find beneficial for them is not always expedient? All things may be lawful for us, but all things that are lawful may not benefit us, All things are lawful for me, but shall I be brought under the power of those things within myself? It is also my experience the very people that have betrayed me, do not want to allow me to do what is “beneficial” to me, when it is beneficial to “me”. Because they feel its unbenefical to “them”. They want to tie me to the very conditions they do not want to be tied to. Isn’t that an imbalance? Unjust? Isn’t that the very place where “betrayl” occurs? If we are in agreement there is no betrayl. Betrayl is a disagreement, it is division and not unity. When there is openess, honesty, and agreement, there will be no betryal. Why can’t people be honest about what they want to do then? If that is the definition of “Unconditional” love. Is unconditional love not True, not Real, not genuine or Equal?

  • This is a bit too simplistic. If someone commits to build something together with me and then they do something that damages our relationship, myself and/or themselves, out of trauma, or course I’ll feel hurt, angry, resentful. The question (at least for me) is how to come back to trust without breaking up.

  • Sadhguru, I have a Question … Through Mind Power, Can u Turn Off a Fan ? Could You Turn On the Television with the power of your Mind ? I mean you will not press any Button on the Remote of the TV and it will just get ON in seconds by your MIND … is that Possible ? Is this is called the Third Eye ?

  • Freedom can also bring betrayal. Speak your heart and walk away if you can’t deal with certain things. Some signs are so clear yet they want you to act like nothing is being done. I don’t agree with this response it felt all over the place. Give some people freedom and they take a whole yard. At the end of the day simple things such as respect, loyalty and kindness are basic acts if that’s not in it then it’s enough to start doing some thinking.

  • Estoy acostumbrado… ÂżTraiciĂłn o delitos graves para intentar hacer daño por sentirse mejor de lo poca cosa que son? No voy a hablar… Nunca. Muchas gracias Sadhguru. 😘

  • What if a best friend backstabs. You know who is your best friend coz you have spent time with them. Someone might come and say he/she wasn’t your best friend in the first place so just get over it. But that is not true. Only you know the time spent with them or the quality of time spent with them. That’s why its called “backstabbing”. And that hurts

  • Don’t imagine a husband being happy seeing his wife cheating on him and saying: “Honey, I still love you, just do anything that makes you happy” 🙂 🙂 I think…THIS is an unrealistic expectation/ do whatever you want to do without thinking how your close ones feel about it – is it not lack of sensititivity?

  • I like many of this man’s ideas. However in this case he is speaking of an ideal theory. Not reality When another person we have cared for and loved purposely works to deceive and destroy us…just because…it is very painful How would he respond if his much loved wife took his daughter & ran off with his daughter & his much younger more handsome best friend? This theory is spoken not from his experience, but as an academic disconnected lecture After all, whoever we are, we are only human and all of us have feelings

  • What he says does not apply for every perspective of life …what he says is not a pragmatic approach…after listening to him …I have realised that we must seek for our core motivation and talk to someone who really understand you(it’s very rare but still go for someone whom you like the most)…..and yes be yourself …let your emotions burst up … because it we who can choose to be happy always no matter what…

  • Okay so I think a lot of people missed the point here… let me rephrase… If they cheat, let them. He is not suggesting you stay, he isn’t giving a directive at all, and that’s what most of us want. To be TOLD what to do… but no one can direct us this way. It is simply up to us to decide which way we’d like to gamble. You can love them, and still leave all while respecting their decision to cheat or betray you. You don’t have to stay where you are being mistreated, you just don’t shame them for doing what they want. Whether it’s beneficial for them or not, whether it hurts them or not… that isn’t your concern. Your concern is yourself. You ensure that their access to you is limited (or cut) until they learn to address their behavior from an honest heart and spirit. But YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STAY. Hope this helps.

  • sorry but im not agreed.. When someone betrays u, it means that thy r disturbing or cheating the emotional bond build on trust between us..we can let them do whatever thy want only wen tht act is not related to u.. so wen the word ‘Us’ comes its with the respect & feeling of interdependency..So i feel wen someone betrays, one shud not hurt them bak but do not become too much dependent on them for ur happiness & fulfillment.. pls understand human is unstable creatures..Trust urself..

  • Unlike his opinions on other issues, his answer here is vague and it trivialises the issue of betrayal in a relationship. While it is true that we are responsible for our happiness and that nobody in this world owes us anything and we should never expect anything from anybody, does it really work like that in the real world? You invest your emotions, trust, time and energy in a relationship for a long time and suddenly the other person betrays your trust and you should feel happy that he or she is doing what makes him or her happy? What about our self esteem and our self respect? And the hurt it causes to us? He saying that only mothers have the right to correct a person I beg to disagree.

  • But what if people cheat in marriage affecting wife, children, family etc etc even if your bf and gf cheating on your patner. Should we let go just Bec we love him or her let him or her destroy the feelings and respect again and again ? yaa I got it that he or she is doing for their happiness and acc to sadguru let them do what they want unless they don’t harm themself. And they are harming the people who love him/her . what about the people whom they promised to be their like family. The question that HV been asked is wrong.

  • It’s called unconditional love to me. You love them no matter what. I’ve loved and never gotten anything positive back. Still I love…..The End!!! Very wise man here. If makes me feel one thing. Go ahead preacher I do not want you in my life. You know who you are…leave my life alone. It’s been years…im not interested in your opinion about anything…i value your opinion very little! I type this to someone who has hurt me more than anyone I’ve ever known in my lifetime. This is my life..not yours…God gave it to me….not you. You have instilled a great distaste in my mouth for humanity. Thats wrong….ill never do as you want from me…never. Prompting others to great hatred is very wrong. I’m headed that way where you are concerned. Please leave my life…ive seen you damage many lives. It’s wrong…i loved you like you a spiritual hero. When I first encounter you. As I came to know you…i saw a very judgemental man…whom I’ve grown to have little regard for. Walk away and leave my life. God can take care of me. You are NOT God….and I’ll not do as you want. This life was given to me…not you. Id fallen in love with a good man. And you have ruined it…thats what you do best….is wound people. You are the only one who cannot seem to see yourself clearly. This is my heart towards you. Leave my life!!!

  • How to deal with trust issues: 1. Ask yourself how your reactions line up with reality 2. Learn to be non-defensive when you communicate 3. Let people know what you need and be direct about it 4. Give people a chance to show you who they are 5. Practice open-ended conversations that allow for disagreement 6. Confront your tears and don’t allow them to hold control over you

  • “Trust issues are developed when too much focus is concentrated on the pain, but not enough on overcoming the pain” That sentence really spoke to me, because its so true getting you trust broken hurts so much and all you want is to avoid that kind of pain in the future. But closing yourself off is making it so much worse!!! Because then you are forced to sit with your pain while being unable to move

  • Whenever I find my trust issues creeping in, I try to be as independent as possible. I might feel sad if people lie/cheat, but it would be more because of the time and energy spent on the relationship, not for the person itself. When things don’t work out hank your lucky star!!!! Always keep your own personality, goals and values! It’s not worth it to change who you are for anyone else but yourself.

  • I have trust issues from past relationships and it is now affecting my current relationship. My man is so great and I want to be the best woman for him. He does not deserve to deal with hurt he didn’t cause. Fear is my number one problem that triggers the trust issues. The idea of spending my life with him makes it worth all the struggle to break free from not being able to trust.

  • “People often have trust issues because they are afraid of getting hurt.” This sentence from the third section of this article is absolutely true and perfectly describes my situation. Thank you for sharing this article! Now I have some tips to think about. Hopefully it might help me to overcome my trust issues.

  • I’ve been perusal this article every day. I met my forever after and don’t want to screw it up. He’s so patient with me and understanding. I know I’m not easy to love and I’ve pushed him away over and over again only for him to keep trying to get me back and prove his love. Even though I know it’s not healthy it’s not an easy thing to change. I’ve never trusted anyone

  • Thank you for this article. Recently, someone has tried to gaslight me into thinking I did something that in actuality they themselves did to make me feel guilty and dirty. Ever since then I’ve had trouble and even started doubting the intentions of people close to myself. I no longer feel comfortable sharing anything personal to anyone. After seeing this article I’m motivated to work on myself and my severe trust issues.

  • Past trauma gives me trust issues, I’m a survivor of sexual abuse, but before being abused I had five months of a normal, non-harmful relationship with my abuser. That experience, plus not really having anyone who I can talk to fully about the effects of sexual abuse who doesn’t respond to me like I’m crazy, outside of other survivors in support groups (who are angels!) has given me some trust issues, because I can’t be real with a lot of people in my life, and it can be hard to feel safe when getting closer to people when that was the preclude to abuse.

  • I have major trust issues because of my last relationship. I never have been more hurt in my life… 3 years later i still have trust issues and walls. Hopefully i can break them down for the person i plan on spending the rest of my life with. Instead of hurting our relationship. Thank you for the article!

  • I’m positive and always see the good sides of others, which also makes me easily trust them. Also nice, sometimes “too nice” and introverted, I somehow feel relieved when knowing someone with trust issues. It makes me feel like I’m not a lone wolf, that people can be sensitive too so that we can connect, I can learn from their experience (they’re mostly wise) and I want them to feel trusted by me (I admit I can’t be reliable except being a procastinator :3)

  • I think media and my own childhood trauma (which my brain has locked away, for my own mental and emotional protection) has gotten me into the mindset of “everything is always going to be bad in some way. People can be terrible and ignorant and violent, and though there are some good things in the world, they are few and far between.” I need to start learning how to trust, probably just on a small scale for now, like with close friends and family.

  • I was in a relationship with someone who was totally a narcissist and I just can’t get over how much that hurt. I trusted them only because of manipulation and i hear the same things from people who WANT to get into a relationship with me and it scares me. I know this article is old, but honestly it’s something i needed to hear right now. Thank you Psych2Go

  • ” …But you need to decide if it’s holding you back ” Needed to ask myself this question and realize my fear of putting my trust into someone with such an unfamiliar feeling of being able to trust someone was truly holding me back from something that can be great for me. Hopefully I can practice this everyday and grow enough not to let something good slip away.

  • I know that it’s a really complicated issue, and it’s fine to be struggling to solve it. I’ve come to the point, when I can clearly see if I’m too suspicious to people I love, w/o any good reason but only cause of my betrayal trauma…and this is so difficult to speak up about it. I feel like it would either hurt them, or scare them off, because it makes you look hysterical…I wish we all can overcome it someday

  • I am what one might call “slow to trust.” I’m incredibly wary of people and am very slow to open up. I’m also the kind of person who once my trust is broken, it never comes back, not really anyway. I got into a fight with my brother, someone I trusted implicitly, and during that fight, he crossed an unforgivable line. I haven’t spoken to him in over a month, save a few short sentences at family gatherings for the sake of courtesy. It wasn’t the first time someone I thought I could trust hurt me, but it was the worst.

  • The whole breaking old habits thing is very true. I’m way more used to people turning on me, ghosting me, or suddenly treating me as though I’m insignificant. And the first boy I ever kissed, turned around and kissed 7 other girls behind my back, 4 of which were friends of mine, while I was in the same room the next night. Not magical at all. When you’re young and impressionable, the people you like and the ones who treat you like a friend become very important to you. When they suddenly stop talking to you for months while hanging out with other people, when your boyfriend tells you he likes the way you look but wants you to change your personality leaves a serious impact on you. On my birthday, I was surrounded by good friends and my current boyfriend who all love me very much. But I cried because I just didn’t believe it or didn’t feel like I deserved any of it. I’m having a hard time trusting that people are here to stay, and that they genuinely like me for who I am. I’m slowly getting there but it’s taking me a lot of time to rebuild my trust in others, and believe that they’re genuinely here for me.

  • Love how it’s just now I have been realizing that I have trust issues. I haven’t been friends with the best people and I have been used many times. And I thought that didn’t have any effect on me But I’m feeling the weight more and more every day and it sucks because I have a hard time trusting the people i know the most. I’m so scared of being used again. I’m so scared that I’m just as disposable as I always felt I was. And it makes me seem really needy and always needing reasurence because I’m always told it’s just in my head. And I had the courage to think the people that did bad things to me didn’t leave scares ;-;

Confront your fears and don’t allow them to hold control over you

  • I found it hard to trust people in my life because I had lacked a lot of trust within myself. I had been a people pleaser for a long time and I am at this point in my life where I am getting out of that. It is a rough process for me, and can definitely be emotionally stirring. It also came from experiences that I’ve had where people were doing things behind my back. I had lacked the proper skills and setting boundaries for myself and other people growing up. It made it hard for me to handle my emotions and the situations with people. Now, it’s getting a whole lot better. I’m learning now, and I’m in a relationship where I’m beginning to finally open up about things. There are times where I still feel insecure because of the disagreement of another, and other times I feel strongly to openly express myself. It’s a big flip-flop, and it’s a rough process as I mentioned. It’s very much worth it, and I see that as my angle to be completely cleared from everything that has held me back to trust people. That everything, is me.

  • I don’t trust others because of so many reasons: 1. Not enough communication from the other person 2. Little effort to see you or talk to you in person or not in person 3. Too much pain from my past has broken my heart and ruined me for trusting people again 4. Not too many people are ever around or act like an true friend 5. People are too busy to be an good friend and only use social media but never contact me

  • This is great what you guys doing, and a lot of teen are listening to it. I do have one suggestion it will be beneficial to support your advices by giving example and be specific eg when you say open ended questions or communication what is open ended communication do it this way . A lot of people need this specific examples to change and learn otherwise is just dry awareness. You really have a potential to reach many people you mini films are fantastic but luck short examples of someone is saying this how to you react . I just wanted to give you my suggestion . Thank you for your hard work

  • After my experience in Highschool and up to first quarter of College, I already developed a personality disorder. Paranoid Personality Disorder because of the bad things I experienced back then. Whenever new information come to me, I automatically doubt its factuality and credibility. Despite having a hard time, I am still improving myself everyday. I am trying to open up more and trust more to those who deserve it. I am making a progress though slow.

  • Personally, it’s the fear of not being likable enough, and the mentality of “oh they’re eventually going to find out all of my flaws and make fun of me….”, then I will just back away… this issue is affecting every aspect of my life right now, but I have no resources to any therapy service… Idk what to do.

  • I have trust issues because of my family. I was adapted to live in an ungratifying environment, so I’m always first to gratify and praise others to create a different environment. Sometimes, it can make people uncomfortable. I feel like I could never get an intimate understanding between me and my friends because they can’t provide me with the resources that will help me get over my trust issues. I’m always afraid of being disappointed and getting an offensive reaction that will put me in a worse place than I was.

  • I think i have trust issues but idk it might be a mental disorder bc i always think my friends are lying when they say “i cant call” and then i check all their social media and see what their doing or if their doing something else and then on their insta i might see them hanging out with other people so i think they dont like me as much and go off on them.. idk i might just be insane 💀

  • So im gay. And i came out to my mom, telling her to not tell anyone, just in case. Some times later (during a camping trip), i came out to my cousin (that went fine) and a little after i came out to my brother. Later during that night, my brother told me he already knew because my mom (who i told not to tell anyone) told him already. I just pretended nothing happened, nothing at all. For at least 2 years, until recently i bursted back at my mom about it and she “justified” herself saying that “Why are you making this such a big deal, everyone already knew anyway” and “It was a long time ago, why cant you just forgive me”

  • I think the knowledge that some people can be manipulative and yet appear nice frightens me the most. Like I think you mentioned the dark empath characteristic in another article, it’s that sort of person that I fear. Even though I know it’s unlikely, I’m always afraid that close friends have ulterior motives and will just leave if they don’t get what they want from me. So I have trouble with genuine trust because there’s always a part of me that goes “what if..” and I don’t want to get broken by that

  • When you’re recovering from narcissistic abuse and are frightened of new relationships because you don’t want the chance of ending up in the same abuse you went through before. What makes it worse is when you can’t trust your own family to help you through it. By the way, thanks for this article. It was helpful.

  • I needed this… after a long time I opened myself to a person… she is understandable and understands my issues and is willing to work on it. However I can’t go full on relationship with her because I just alway have the fear I might get cheated on. Even when she tells me she would never do that. I don’t know what to do

  • I have trust issues because people are usually so judgemental. You can see it in their eyes, weighing you up deciding what sort of person you are. That’s why I get along better with children than adults, because they don’t immediately jump to conclusions about a person unless if course they have been taught not to trust.

  • I used to have trust issues after having experienced one heartbreak and running into a couple of bad seeds. My closest girlfriend is still struggling with trust issues because of a relationship that ended badly. As much as I want her to just have a happy life in general, I feel like there’s only so much that I can do for her sometimes. That feeling of powerlessness doesn’t always sit well with me, and amongst other things. I guess if anything, I’m just glad that the long-standing relationship that I’ve maintained with my own therapist has served me well. ❤

  • point number 3 is presented in a very bad way, from the point of view of person with trust issues. First, you basically say “if you have trust issues – just be honest and open” which is the same as telling a person with depression to cheer up, then you say “you might be afraid of getting hurt, but don’t be afraid – it’s inevitable”, which is an awful way to help with issues in general, not just trust issues. Aaand in the end you say it’s better to ignore the pain and just live with it. I don’t even know what to say about that last one. I like your website, and there are lots of amazing articles and most of the tips are great and helpful, but sometimes stupidity creeps in one of the advices, almost if that one advice is written by a different person, or added when a deadline is approaching, and is never checked for actual usefulness

  • I’d like to practice this in my marriage going forward. I bottle everything up all the time and then something sets me off and I let it all out which usually ends up in a long fight. I think the open ended conversation is something I’d really like to try. It’s really hard sometimes to bring things to my wife that concern me when she gets so defensive.

  • Six ways you can break free from your trust issues : Intro 0:00 1. Ask yourself how your reactions line up with reality 0:47 2. Learn to be non-defensive when you communicate 1:18 3. Let people know what you need and be direct about it 1:52 4. Give people a chance to show you who they are 2:28 5. Practice open-ended conversations that allow for disagreement 3:08 6. Confront your fears and don’t allow them to hold control over you 3:33 Outro 3:54 I recommand to watch the article for more ! If you wanted to see it surely there is a reason ; so good luck with whatever you’re going through I hope you’ll be happy 🙂

  • I needed to be waaay more direct getting ready for mine and my husband’s wedding. Since then, I don’t trust anyone to get things done right. When I got someone to agree to help with something (cutting food, carry decorations to the car, searching through the fridge for an ingredient in the fizzy drink which was sitting right here, etc) they didn’t get it done. I should have spelled it out that I truly needed help. When I walked out on my way from getting changed and found 2 of my church friends had decorated the cake that unfortunately had arrived completely undecorated I could have cried with gratitide. It still touches me today that they decorated it so beautifully and I didn’t have to be the power queen to get it done.

  • I have trust issues because to many people have broken my trust. My biological parents, my adoptive parents, my entire friend group, my sister, my stepsister, and a lot more. I don’t trust anyone because if I do, I know they might break it. So after my mom and my sister broke my trust, it all came crumbling down. I now realize that my trust was too freely given. I don’t trust anyone anymore. If someone manages to gain my trust, that will mean something. I don’t and will not trust anyone ever again. Not after all that’s happened.

  • You’re holding yourself and don’t want to trust others because you’re afraid of the pain you will feel when they fail you. The pain is simply your minds reaction to failure, it’s just that, it doesn’t last and it can be overcome, while on the other side, being able to trust while also knowledged is some thing that will reward you with many great things like stable relationships, friendships, and success.

  • My past rejection as far back as childhood has lead me to have issues with trust and faith in others. I know I should be over it, and I’ve excused it as, “She was just a child like myself. She probably didn’t mean to say it the way she did.” What children say or do to other children can have a big impact later on when they become adults. Because of that rejection from her, it left an emotional scar that never healed properly. Keep in mind that I was already a shy person, to begin with, so that never helped any matters. The way she rejected me left a very painful impression on me. I needed a boost of confidence, and she did the complete opposite. To say to someone, “I don’t like you, and I don’t want any part of you.” Hurts a lot, especially when it’s a 14-year-old child, and they don’t know how to process all of their feelings just yet. They’re still young. In part because of that, I’ve had a fear of rejection. If I wanted to tell someone how I felt, I’d keep it to myself because I’d think I’d get rejected like that again. I haven’t been open as much as I’ve wanted to in part of that. I’ve held back a lot more of my feelings because I fear what they’re going to say. It hasn’t left me bitter, but it has left me a colder person, and I don’t like that. I want to be a warmer person, but I’d need to be more trusting for that to happen.

  • I’ve been hurt in all romantic relationships i’ve had, and your answer is to go out and trust and deal with heartache again and again for supposed growth.. no thank you. I’m cashing in my chips and being nice and friendly to the one person i care for most and that’s me! If the world wanted more nice people, they shouldn’t have treated them so shty. Now i just watch the world turn on itself and live in as much pleasure and as little pain as possible.

  • My main feeling which has caused my trust issues is frustration. I don’t expect perfection, but I do expect the small things at least. For example, being noticed and someone being sympathetic and compassionate. Rarely are anyone like this to me, and what’s worse is that I’m like that but I don’t get it in return. I’m also direct and honest about my loneliness and need for friendship, and yet they still turn their backs on me, or worse they pretend to understand and then walk away without warning. I even had someone tell me to just simply sort my life out when they had the same struggles before and they said it while throwing abuse at me and calling me “fragile.” You support people who are fragile, not throw hate at them. Some people just make no sense.

  • You can trust to a certain degree but you can only really trust yourself. I suggest around people you trust the vibes you get when around them and always listen and trust your intuition and gut feelings and emotionally ground yourself keep your feet firmly on the ground and stay very strong and check your star sign for guidance but remember they are general ok. If people did this more people would be a lot happier period !!!!

  • This year a lot of my “friends” in my “friend” group left our group. Now it’s only me and my true friend. A lot more stuff has happened but this really tor me down. I have less confidence, trust issues and Idk what this is called but I can’t ever except something good. I always have this thought in my head “nothing good ever last this is gonna go away” I really wanna go back to my normal self I hate this feeling

  • i break free from this whole trusting issues the moment i learned (from Sadhguru), whatever they are doing is in their understanding of life and none of it is in my control. so, rather than feeling betrayal when they “break” my trust, i must understand, they do it because that’s their level of awareness in regards to the situation, and i have the control in how i react and my attitude towards the person / circumstances. i also learned that, trusting others is also about how trustworthy we are as a person. can i become someone who i expect them to be? from this point of view, i feel more compassion and forgiving toward others and myself.

  • I still have trust issues, but it’s not so much that I’m afraid to share about myself or listen to others, but I don’t trust they won’t betray me at some point. I have learned to forgive no matter what. I have a very negative view of the world, but in a way that negativity makes me see some positives. Here’s what I mean: I think the world is a terrible place and then I hear someone does a good deed. It makes me happy to know there is some love and light in a dark and hateful place. I believe everyone I ever know will at some point betray me and I can’t trust that they won’t hurt me, but it reminds me that if every single one will hurt me, then I can’t hold a grudge on every single one, so I better forgive each and every one each and every time. I also think of what they’ve done and wonder what I would do if I were them. I even think of the bad things I’ve done and wonder if it’s worth judging them harshly. I believe in balance, but I see the world as dark, hateful, cruel, and unforgiving. It just means I don’t have to trust the world to be good, I’ve just gotta strive to force in some light if I can. I am skeptical when making friends and I have trust issues with even the people closest to me, but it doesn’t stop me from being open and honest or acting like myself. I’ve got nothing to hide. They can no longer use me because I fight back. And if they don’t like it, they can take a hike. I don’t need to trust anyone. I just need to feel comfortable knowing they’ll screw up at some point and I have to be myself.

  • Listening to this article is difficoult, because it’s accurate. I almost completely stalled on every sigle aspect of my life, wanting to do something but believing tomorow will not be better. I can do a lot but I take myself, my abilities and my knowledge too litely. As if it’s just an insignificant drop in the see. And I let everyone treat me this way because at first I thought it would motvate me to do more work but when there was too much I couldn’t return, or so I was made to believe as it would make me quote “stupid”. And now I’m burned out. Been like that for 7 years. No friends, no parties, only more work and complaining. Now it’s not even about making others appreciate me … but it might be. Most importantly it’s about believing that, I can do it no matter what it is. And taking thigs step by step to not burn myself out even more than I already am. Like eating an elefant, one bite at the time.

  • What’s holds me back is fear. Fear of getting hurt and ridiculed buy others. During middle school I was bullied and highly missed treated. All of my peers in my classes treated me like this and I had a hard time making friends because I thought they’ll do the same to me. I’m in the 10th grade now and I still have trust issues to this day but I work everyday to overcome that

  • I ended a relationship with my ex a couple months back and feel that i’ve moved on from her, but i guess those scars never healed. I mainly have trust issues because i felt like after our relationship ended, my heart wasn’t just split in half, I feel like it was crushed into a million pieces, so i don’t want it to be crushed more than it already is. I see details that scare me and i put up a barrier between me and anyone else. I guess now viewing this article i should try to work on putting the pieces of my heart back together, im not sure how but i guess i can start with trying not to over analyze people and panic at any sign they may harm me. Thanks a lot 🙂

  • I always have trust issues because when I was younger, everyone wanted to be my friend, little did I know that they were trying to hurt me mentally and emotionally, they said bad things to me, so I unfriended them, but they, bullying arrived, I have been bullied all my elementary life and I had almost zero friends, the only friends I had was kids getting bullied, so I befriended them but I was scared that they will betray me, fast forward to today, I got very good friends who I have deep relationships

  • My trust issues come from multiple places. Firstly my sister and my cousin would never respect my boundaries would always go through my stuff without my permission. Secondly I was bullied a lot in school. Thirdly my freshman and sophomore years of college were plagued with me attempting to reach out to people and instantly getting rejected because my political views did not match theirs and nothing else mattered to them. Finally, when I reached out to my childhood friend who I had known for nearly 13 years by this point about my trouble at college, he straight up abandoned me because he agreed with their viewpoints. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read all of this. I know it was a lot.

  • I have trust issues because I was right time and time again. I have a guard up so I get defensive if I see or feel the slightest bit off about a situation. I always wonder if my bf would feel the same if I so happen to put him through things of that sort. Not that I would and not that it’s even bad but from my pov and it being consistent it triggers me. I’m learning to trust other ppl around me and him and I find it helps me feel better and not over think something. I also learned to not be afraid to be open w other people and friends and trust them. It helps w the overall situation.

  • you mention it, the fear of being hurt. even my closest friend can’t earned my trust. I never tell her my secret even when I want to because of the thought “she wouldn’t care so why should I tell her.” it cause me to have gap between any of my friend and sometimes they’re just feel like a strangers to me. I hate myself.

  • Old article, but oh well. I’m a typical Taurus. I’m stubborn, I move only when I feel like it. I’m also a strong empath and when I fall in love, I fall hard. Saying that, I’ve dated 6 other people. 5 of those left me for someone else. 2 of those 5 slept with my best friend at the time. (Different “friend” each time) I full acknowledge and admit that I have severe trust issues. Don’t know why I’m sharing this and may regret it in the future, but idc atm. To anyone who finds this and has been in the somewhat the same situation as I have, please know that you are not alone. I can’t/won’t try to earn your trust, but know that there are still good people out there that will give you a hug when one is needed. All you need to do is ask.

  • Sheeesh ive been single for almost 5 years cuz of the past that ive been through sigh and that is 2 break ups in a row and the girl i met saying “I wasn’t taking good care enough for her/them” and after that it really breaks my heart when i heard that word and after all of that now i have so much trust issue and afraid whenever a girl approaches me and also preventing me finding a special someone that is for me for the past 5 years… 😢😢

  • When you see so many people get cheated on and lied to with no remorse its hard to trust your partner to not do the same. Everybody says their partner is different and most of those people get cheated on, so whos to say i wont be? See this is where the trust issues come from for me. All it takes is seeing texts between her and another guy she didnt tell me about and im instantly worried out of my mind when in reality its not even that bad.

  • Huh, sometimes I think my girlfriend has trust issues with me. Although we are together quite a long time I let her to feel insecure because I do know that I am sometimes really tough and hard to stand for long time without any shakes and scratches. Even though it seems to be the case it doesn’t make me comfortable. There are some situations when we could go further but she decides to block herself instead :/. I believe in us together but I think we have something to learn to grow even more confident approach to each other. Thanks for this film. I think it is a good material for some reflections on this topic.

  • i overcome my trust issue before, i mean all those words that she said that i should trust her from the very start since she will do her best to not break my trust, but damn after the heartbreak & seeing her with someone else after 1 month with her co-worker i suddenly felt that all those words that she said are nothing but lies from the start, that’s why i don’t trust anyone anymore no matter what they give or throw at me, no matter how consistent you are giving assurance i won’t believe you.

  • What I realised whats holding me back is the expectations.. like I expect someone to do somthing my way despite the fact we all think different and do things differently and when I see someone I like do something differently than I expect its giving me Hard Times to trust which is MY fault and im trying to work on it.. I kinda live in the future and if the future dont go as I planed its difficult for me. I realised this once I met someone I Care for. Soo my advice is don’t expect from others the same behavior you have

  • In 7th grade I had a friend, we were really close. We even called eachother sisters. We were in the same friend group in volleyball, but then they all started excluding me She also did this in youth group, pulling my long time friends there away from me and them happily doing it, I confronted her about it and she got mad at me, there was a group chat. I tried talking about why I felt excluded but they just needed me with insults and called me a baby, I brought my friend in to help me and she did which was amazing but she didn’t want to lose the girls friendship either. I was also afraid to leave the chat because then they would insult me and make fun of me more I just cut off from them and then 6 months later me and the girl slowly came together But she did the same thing but at church, my friend stayed with me but still left reluctantly. My childhood friend I was friends with since I was 3, left without hesitation. The girl made a thing called “backseat buddies” and it was super exclusive and she got to choose who was back there on mission nights, it was almost never me, we once volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and they went off in a group of 3 and left me alone Me and the girl stopped being friends and the childhood friend and girl stopped going to my youth group, my friend still does though, the girl did the same to my friend after me, I had the same reaction as my friend did to me. Jump to 8th grade, I had a friend I’d known since kindergarten, she kind of ended up in a different friend group in middle school and i wanted to be there too, eventually I gave up on the friend group but I still wanted to be friends with her.

  • It took years for me to get to a point where i felt comfortable in opening up and trusting my partner enough to not worry every time she went out with friends or went over to friends houses after work. For years i would be hyper vigilant and turn up with it just being in my head every time. When i finally stopped checking in all the time, stopped getting upset about her hanging out with friends. She cheated on me and left after 8 years. It was hard before, and it’s practically impossible now.

  • I identified on my own that I have to be able to say what I need in order for them to be met. My trust issues stem from familial betrayal and lack of emotional/mental safety in my family. So the fact I can’t just detach from them makes it incredibly difficult having my trust issues & still living with them. I wanna grow past it but my being built a wall to protect me from their bull but it’s creating this need to do everything on my own, to be alone, to shoo them away but I guess I can’t do that anymore /: . I wish I could be on my own still but I need their help to even get to be on my own.🙄

  • My perfectionism is one of the reasons, I have trust issues. Most of the reasons are that I don’t trust myself to do anything right, so why even make friends, they will see my flaws. Why make friends, when I can’t even be my own friend? Beating myself is an understatement, I am my own “toxic” friend.

  • I didnt appreciate how personal things were shared with others and assumptions were created on top of it. This is how my trust was lost. Being a good person doesnt mean one isnt capable of moral mistakes. I am not askin for much but for some basic self-reflection. It increases reputation and trust too…. Just sideadvice….
