Does God want marriages to end?
Jesus’s view on this question is more nuanced in the New Testament. In Matthew, the Pharisees ask Jesus, “Can a man divorce his wife for any reason?” (Matthew 19:3). The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking him to give a simple answer about divorce. But Jesus knows they’re not sincere. Instead of answering, Jesus quotes Genesis and says: “God joins together, let no one separate.” As the Pharisees kept asking questions, Jesus explained that divorce is not what God wanted. Jesus says, “Moses allowed divorce because of your hard hearts, but it wasn’t God’s original plan. If you divorce and marry someone else, you are committing adultery.” Jesus says God’s standard is that no one should divorce. This is similar to what we see in Matthew 18 when Peter asked about forgiveness. Peter asked, “How many times should I forgive?” But like the Pharisees, Peter wasn’t asking for the answer. He wanted to look good, but Jesus saw right through it. Jesus said God would forgive 77 times. This shows what Jesus expects of us. He doesn’t want a grudge. He doesn’t want us to just check the box. He wants us to pursue him. Pursue him with a pure heart. Don’t just get by. But have a heart that is for Him.

I am so glad he said what he did about it being awesome to be married. There is some thing that goes around on Facebook every once in a while about how hard marriage is and it mentions all their trials of marriage and then kind of as an afterthought it says how wonderful marriage is. I am in my 40s and have never been married, but would like to be. At times, if I say that to a married person, they immediately tell me how hard marriage is. I think that’s a disservice to marriage. There’s no wonder that fewer young people are getting married because they always hear how hard it is. For those of us who are older singles, talking about the difficulties of marriage, does not take away the desire to get married. I think we need to follow Jim’s example and admit that it’s pretty awesome. I think we need to take back marriage!
I suppose being married is nice, I’ve never been married. Later in life I discovered that Our Lord brings the people together. He never brought an available lady to me inside or outside of church. I am 66 years old soon to be 67 and disabled due to being hit by an SUV in a crosswalk. It is a difficult life; I don’t believe that a woman is going to want that kind of life.
