How Does Wedding Dress Sizing Work?

Bridal sizing is about two to three sizes larger than regular street clothing and differs from designer to designer. The most accurate way to determine your wedding dress size is by taking measurements at home or at the bridal salon, then comparing them to the designers. To ensure your measurements reflect your actual body size, dress in form-fitting, thin clothing and wear your wedding dress standard size.

To measure yourself for a wedding dress, prepare a tape measure and a full-length mirror, dress in form-fitting, thin clothing, and wear your wedding dress standard size. Start by measuring around your bust, waist, and hips, making sure they are not too tight or loose.

Bridal sizing is based on traditional European sizing from the 1940s, with ready-to-wear sizing in the U.S. adjusted over the years. Wedding dresses typically run one or two sizes smaller, so when you normally wear a 10 you might end up with a dress that’s a 14. Your bridal stylist will take three measurements to determine what size wedding dress you should order.

Wedding dress sizes typically correspond to the traditional numeric dress UK sizes (0-28), but can also be found in the US. It is important to plan ahead and know which bridal salons you plan to shop at ahead of time to make an informed decision.
