In the United States, nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, and the institution of marriage has evolved from being seen as the bedrock of healthy families and communities to being seen as a means to ensure social stability and produce children to continue the family line.

Marriage is now viewed as being based on individual choice, with love-based marriages becoming the norm. The number of couples who indicate they met by introduction is declining, but there is growth in dating services that support mate selection based on the individual. Moral or structural commitment is another reason for marriage, often driven by religious beliefs or social norms.

Despite cohabitation being widely viewed as acceptable, the public still sees societal benefits in marriage. A slight majority of Americans (53%) still sees marriage as a lifelong contract or oath, and 55% of marriages worldwide are arranged. However, both divorce rates and remarriage rates are increasing.

The Bible teaches that marriage is sacred because it is the holy word of God and should be treated with respect. Today, more people are tying the knot in their 40s and older, and the share of people who never marry has doubled since 1960.
