How Long Has Child Marriage Been Around?

Child marriages are a global issue affecting millions of young girls worldwide, leading to negative consequences for their health, future, and family. Between 2011 and 2020, more than 140 million girls will become child brides, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). If current levels of child marriages hold, 14.2 million girls annually or 39,000 daily will marry too young. The UN estimates that 640 million girls and women who are alive today married before they were 18, and 12 million girls become new child brides each year.

Child marriage has expanded rapidly over the past 20 years, with one in three women between the ages of 20 and 24 reporting they had been married as children. However, progress has been uneven, and child marriage is not declining fast enough. In Latin America and the Caribbean, levels of child marriage today are as high as they were 25 years ago.

In the United States, child marriage is a marriage in which at least one party is under 18 years of age—or the age of majority. In the last 10 years, the percentage of child marriages has dropped from 23% to 19% of all marriages. However, this isn’t fast enough to achieve the goal of eliminating child marriage by the end of the decade.

Child marriage is rooted in gender inequality, with girls who are married before their 18th birthday being disproportionately affected. An average of 40,000 children and young women under the age of 18 are married every day, with more than 60% of child brides in countries where the law applies to the child.
