How Long Was Kate Middleton’S Wedding Dress Train?

Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, was an impressive 9.85 feet long. The train was nearly 9 feet long, making a dramatic entrance into Westminster Abbey. The dress featured 58 satin gazar and organza buttons down the back, and the skirt mimicked an opening flower thanks to white satin gazar arches. The train was short compared to Princess Diana’s 25-foot-long train, which was two meters, 70 centimeters long.

The dress was made of ivory and white satin gazar with hand-embroidered English lace elements. The lace elements were worked in part by the craftsmen and women of the Royal School of Needlework. The dress has sparked a flurry of copycat gowns even among celebrity brides in the last decade, with names like Nicky Hilton choosing a long-sleeve, lace Valentino gown for her July 2015 wedding to James Rothschild.

Kate Middleton’s wedding dress is still one of the most Googled dresses in the world, with the elegant lace number designed by Sarah Burton for the fashion house. The train stretched behind her as she walked down the aisle, making it a memorable moment.

In addition to the train, Middleton borrowed her grandmother-in-laws Cartier “halo” tiara to hold her 16.5-foot-long silk tulle veil in place. Few wedding dresses have garnered such long-lasting excitement and influence as Kate Middleton’s.

How long was the train on Princess Diana’s wedding dress?

Diana, Princess of Wales, wore an ivory silk taffeta and antique lace gown with a 25-foot train and a 153-yard tulle veil at her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981. It became one of the most famous dresses in the world and was considered one of the most closely guarded secrets in fashion history. The bridal gown was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel. They wanted it to be a dress that would go down in history and that Diana would love. It had to be dramatic. Diana chose the designers because she liked a chiffon blouse they made for her photo with Lord Snowdon. The silk taffeta was made by Stephen Walters. The Emanuels talked to Maureen Baker, who made Princess Anne’s wedding dress, during the dress’s construction. One observer wrote the dress was a crinoline, a symbol of sexuality and grandiosity. It was decorated with pearls and sequins, and the bodice was frilled with lace. The gown was embroidered with pearls and sequins, and it had 10,000 pearls in the center. An 18-karat gold horseshoe was stitched into the petticoats as a sign of good fortune. The lace used to trim it was antique and hand-made. A square of Carrickmacross lace which had belonged to Queen Mary was attached to the gown. A blue bow was also sewn into the interior of the gown’s waistband as her something blue. The wedding dress of Catherine Middleton, for her marriage to Prince William, Diana’s elder son, incorporated machine-made lace appliquéd to silk net. The dress featured lace flounces adorning the neckline and sleeves.

How long was Meghan Markle’s wedding train?

Designing the perfect wedding dress. Waight Keller and Markle decided on a pure white sheen to make the dress look modern. The designer found a double-bonded silk cady fabric from mills across Europe to create a soft, matte, and luminous effect. Six seams make the dress’s shape. The back of Meghan Markle’s dress has a long train of silk and organza. The off-the-shoulder neckline and three-quarter-length sleeves feel modern but respect tradition. Waight Keller says the dress had a playful, modern feel. “The dress represents her modernity and freshness.” Markle’s first wedding dress was also perfect for Lubomirskis’ style, which shows emotion and spontaneity. The photo of the newlyweds on the steps of Windsor Castle’s rose garden is a good example. Markle’s dress flows effortlessly as she smiles and Prince Harry’s arm is around her shoulder. She later changed into a Stella McCartney halter gown for a private reception hosted by her father-in-law, King Charles III.

Which royal had the longest wedding dress train?

Princess Diana’s wedding dress in 1981 set a record. She wore an ivory and silk taffeta gown with antique lace, once worn by Queen Mary. The train was 25 feet long, the longest ever worn by a British royal bride. It had to be folded like a bedsheet to fit into the carriage. The train was so long that Diana told bridesmaid India Hicks to do her best while carrying it down the aisle. If we pulled too much, her tiara and veil would slip, Hicks told Harpers Bazaar in 2018. If we pulled too much, the train would be lost. The gown also had a ruffled neckline, a puffy skirt, and voluminous sleeves. Inside were a blue bow at the waistband for her something blue and a gold horseshoe as a good luck charm.

How long was the Queen’s wedding train?

Hartnell imagined a wedding dress with pearl embroidery and flowers. He was inspired by Botticelli’s painting of Spring, with flowers. The dress was made from duchesse satin, ordered from Wintherthur near Dunfermline. The train was 13 feet long and made of silk tulle. The silk for the appliqués was made at Lullingstone Castle, Kent, and woven by Warner & Sons. Hartnell drew the embroidery design with his head embroideress, Miss Flora Ballard. He says the motifs had to be assembled in a design like a florist’s bouquet. The brides bouquet was made with white orchids. Myrtle came from a bush grown from a sprig of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter’s bouquet.

People were very interested in the dress design. Hartnell had to cover the windows of his workroom at Bruton Street to keep it a secret.

How long is a royal wedding dress train?

Cathedral: This style is one of the most common train lengths. It’s between 6 and 7.5 feet behind the bride and looks formal and classic.

Monarch: This very formal style flows 10 feet or more from the waistline. If the dress doesn’t have a detachable train, use a bustle to keep it off the ground during the reception. This is a common technique done in alterations to allow freedom of movement. Ask your personal bridal stylist about train styles and bustle options.

How much weight did Kate lose for the wedding?

When Kate Middleton lost weight between her November 2010 engagement and April 2011 wedding, people asked how she did it. Her mother’s low-carb diet, created by French doctor Pierre Dukan, made the 30-year-old The Dukan Diet a bestseller. But Middletons rapid weight loss also raised concerns, particularly among those who remembered Prince Williams mother’s struggles with bulimia. In March, Heather Lindsay told Prince William’s fiancée not to lose any more weight when they met. Lindsay later said Middleton laughed and said it was part of the wedding plan. At the time, few questioned it. Many brides lose weight before their wedding. Some reality TV shows even encourage this. Middleton was the most scrutinized bride. But the Duchess of Cambridge’s thin appearance during her Canadian tour suggests the weight loss was more than wedding jitters. Journalists covering the tour discussed it a lot, but rarely mentioned it in their reports. It doesn’t fit with the fairy-tale narrative that William and Catherine embody. One British journalist, a veteran royal watcher, says: “It’s not discussed.” Some reporters, especially women, don’t want to criticize the duchess for her appearance. They’ve chosen not to add to the immense pressure she already is under.

  • I didn’t even realize when Meghan and Harry got married. But this wedding I watched. I was fresh out of High School at the time and for a minute I felt almost bereft. I’ve always heard my mom talk about Princess Diana’s wedding. So to watch Kate marry a Prince was like moving back and forward in time at once. But the most memorable thing for me was perusal CNN’s Isha Sesay interview citizens outside Buckingham Palace the night before this wedding. Back when I thought journalism was a very noble profession.

  • Stunning once-in-a-lifetime wedding entrance, the bells, the choir was superb. It was tastefully and beautifully filmed, the view from above put to great effect. Everything about this spectacular wedding was perfect, everyone involved was on top of their game, seemed comfortable with all the hoopla. Lovely couple. The British at their best.

  • I remember perusal this live back in 2011. Such an amazing moment. Her dress was amazing, she was gorgeus! And that moment when she is walking down the aisle and Prince Harry says”Wait till you see her” and how Prince William looked at her when she was near him…absolutly wonderful! It will remain in history ! I really like remembering it,such an extraordinary sensation! 😍😍

  • william and harry look so young! lol it feels like this was just yesterday! the queen looked SO HAPPY! i rarely see her actually smile at weddings. she is VERY proud of william and kate and KNOW this union is a SOLID ONE! kate was the most beautiful royal bride by far. very elegant, stunning, classy and the list could go on…what a royal bride SHOULD BE! love it 🙂

  • It is 10 years later as I watch this and observe the progression of maturity, loving parents to three children, hard working Royals who value and accept a life of service to their country. Truly to be admired and great powers of example. Yes, they have money, they have lots of help, etc. But their core values consistently never waiver. ✨ And yes, we have all witnessed the opposite within the Royal family which is quite sad if not appalling. ✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨

  • Billions around the world watched this…A real ROYAL wedding. Indeed she got the dress spot on. Cathedral worthy commentator said! Shoulders covered…Such a beautiful moment as she stands before the walk up the aisle with Michael..her Dad. Music for entire ceremony spot in n everybody so happy… Especially QUEEN!!!! N WILLIAM👍👍👍👍💟💟💟💟💟💟. 👌

  • No bride will ever top that of The Duchess of Cambridge. She had both opulence of physical beauty, which, in itself, was breathtaking. Her dress, veil & tiara just unbelievably accented the form of her tiny, Barbie doll figure so beautifully! She looked the part of Canada’s 🇨🇦 future queen. 👑. The countess of Wessex followed in stunning beauty along with Autumn Kelly’s. Three of my favourites in royal family brides! All brides, in their own way and choice of fashion, are beautiful. We really shouldn’t make a comparison of each. They were all married in various times and should be treated as beautiful; although, The Duchess of Cambridge is still my favourite. Scott Compton, Canada 🇨🇦

  • I know it was so long ago but this wedding is beautiful! Majestic but warm. The way Catherine holds her Dad’s hand when they arrived at the altar was touching. Mr Middleton never dreamed he would be giving his daughter away to a prince! All these years and 3 children later they are still in love. A deeper love. It’s wonderful!

  • I remember me and my mates were entering a nightclub in Fiji on this day. I was real tipsy and all I wanted to do was dance but they had a massive projector set up near the bar showing a live broadcast of the wedding and everyone glued onto the screen. It was such a contrast with all us drunken animals perusal such a classy royal wedding lol Kate really took the spotlight that night. She was absolutely stunning.

  • That wedding was so beautiful, it was like a fairytale dream come true. And that dress that Kate wore was gorgeous, and she looked so beautiful. I love that dress, it almost looked like my grandmothers wedding dress. She lived in England and she got married in England. William and Kate make a good couple, they’ll make a great king and queen.

  • Every man and every woman are nervous for their wedding. Will I trip? Will I pass out? But these two. They are still a man and a woman nervous….but they have the WORLD perusal. Not to mention the Royalty factor. With all of that I truly do see just a man and a women worrying about tripping. They seem solid. We are years on now from this. So far so good. I wish them the best of luck.

  • Great marriage, great girl the Duchess of Cambridge starting together, so much pressure, so much publicty. When they were in Germany two weeks ago, people say that they are in reality such charming as the press submits. I did not see them, I was at home and in my office, but maybe a third Windsor will be on his way …. that would be so very great.

  • She did fantastic. To do this you can see how much she loves William he sure is a lucky man. Kate is smart like book smart she got top grades in a class on her own with out paying the teacher off lol she is loving to their children and made the royal family seem more down to earth. She is beautiful and has a real job out side of the castle walls. She is a very special strong woman. Her dad looks so nervous he did great. It would be nice to see the queen pass the crown to William and Kate I no Charles is next in line but I think if Camilla becomes queen when Charles is king I don’t think that will land well for the royal family. Kate would be a stunning Queen. William is like dam that’s my wife lol. I wish you both the best

  • I wonder if anyone else notices how happy harry was this day? How excited he was for his sister in law and brother. I think he has been totally manipulated more than likely by guilt inflicted upon him by his victim wife. That truly is 1 of the saddest things. I don’t know when but I think eventually he will come back to his senses once he figures out who he is really married to.

  • I’m not British, but I would love to be one. I always considered the royal family an icon of the UK and whilst I can understand why some Brits don’t like them, I think it’s a shame if the UK were to ever become a republic. If I ever visited the UK I would love to tour Buckingham Palace and maybe meet a royal.

  • I was at my teachers house with my friends. We were very eager to watch the wedding so we took early leave from our teacher and directly went to one of our friends house and watched the wedding… It was a fantastic feeling for teenagers like us to watch a common girl get married to a prince. That wedding dress was magnificent❤️❤️❤️ BTW i liked the idea of decoration with trees….
