How Many Decibels Is A Wedding Dj?

The average wedding reception typically has a noise level of around 85-90 decibels, which is roughly equivalent to the sound of a DJ. When interviewing bands or DJs for a wedding, it is important to insist that the music be no louder than 80 dB. This is because people expect the music to be at a certain volume in order to want to dance. Sound limiters are used to restrict the volume by either electronically forcing electrical equipment or by doubling the wattage.

When interviewing bands or DJs for a wedding, insist that you want the music to be no louder than 80 dB. This is because many musicians and DJs are accustomed to playing very loud music. However, anything in this degree might provide you with a sound criticism from the neighbors.

Venues with sound limiters set at 95 decibels or preferably higher are pretty live music-friendly and won’t hamper a live wedding band or DJ. More and more venues are instilling strict decibel levels at their locations, and the requirements are even making their way into booking. A sound limiter set to cut off at 90dBA (Peak) 8m away from the performing area will generally allow the DJ/Band to play at around 80-84dBA (RMS).

In summary, when interviewing bands or DJs for a wedding, it is essential to ensure that the music is no louder than 80 dB, as this can affect the overall atmosphere and the comfort of guests.

How many decibels is music at a wedding?

Venues with sound limiters set at 95 decibels or higher are good for live music. Our rock and indie wedding band League of Gentlemen (above) always performs at 95 decibels or higher. Any venue with a limit of 90 decibels or lower is not live music-friendly. Can my live wedding band simply turn down the volume? Your wedding band or live entertainment should always turn down equipment to stay within the decibel limit. If your entertainment includes a drummer, percussionist, or other acoustic instruments, they can play as quietly as possible with the rest of the band. If the sound limiters are below 90, a drummer can play as quietly as they want because they’ll still be too loud, even with the band playing quietly. Wedding bands can only play so quietly. I’ve been there as a drummer. Sometimes I’ve played so quietly it was pointless. Live bands can only turn down so much. My infographic shows that 90 decibels is the volume of a single tractor. Even our popular acoustic wedding band Paper Boats (below) will struggle to perform at that volume.

What decibel are DJ speakers?

When looking at speakers, don’t worry about the wattage. The difference in power output won’t make much difference in volume. Look at the max SPL or dB rating instead. This is the loudest sound the speaker can make. The speaker will probably never hit the max SPL in normal use, but it’s a good way to compare two different speakers. Most DJ PA speakers are in the 110-135 dB range. A 10-decibel difference is like doubling the volume. A 130dB speaker is twice as loud as a 120dB speaker.

Final thoughts. You have to decide if the difference in dB is worth the difference in price. Is a speaker with 132dB worth $250 more than one with 130dB? I don’t think so unless the more expensive speaker has better construction or inputs. A 130dB speaker may be worth the extra $200 over a similar model that only hits 123dB.
