  • No, I used to work in retail back when I was studying and it was also minimum wage. I did not expect any tips. It’s my job to assist customers with their purchases and I was genuinely happy to help them find what they were looking for. Of course, we should show gratitude and be nice to those helping us, however, we should not be expecting tips for simply doing something that our employer already pays us to do. That’s just my opinion 🤷

  • Red Flag to employees looking for jobs. If the employer says you will receive tips as part of your wage it’s a huge red flag don’t work there. Tips should never be part of your wage. Employer’s should be paying a livable wage without including tips. Also employees who have jobs like this where employers predicted tips received amount fell short can and should sue the employer for false advertising and unpaid wages.

  • This is getting ridiculous! As far as I am aware there is no law Federal or Provincial that says it’s a must. Actually, if I’m not mistaken, it can be challenged against the employer. Anyway, if a customer wants to leave a tip to the consultant in this case, give cash in an envelope descretely. It should “not” be a feature for payment of a garment. I just see this as a way for employers to avoid paying more in wages by making the purchaser bare the burden. And it’s not like prices haven’t increased. If I went into a dress shop & saw feature at time of purchase, I wouldn’t be back. I’m already doing some shopping on line. During covid, I missed the shops in the malls. I love in-store shopping, but…….not if this is what I can expect.

  • Did the consultant do the job they were being paid to deliver? Thank you; no tip. 🤨 Did they go above and beyond their job description in helping me, personally? Thank you; MAYBE a tip. I would NOT tip ANY of the services I PAID to do a job for a wedding; and, no, I do not consider that “being cheap”!

  • Don’t a lot of these stores already have some kind of commission? I worked in retail fashion 20+ years ago and the sales associates at my chain made the greater of minimum wage ($6.85/hr at the time) or commission – they provided excellent service as a result and drove more sales. Good sales associates made great money, mediocre sales associates typically didn’t stick around. I’d rather have salespeople bringing me more options or accessories that I might like (or turn down) because they work on commission than be asked to tip. TLDR: You shouldn’t be asked to tip commissioned salespeople.

  • If they aren’t fitting you, no. I work in takeout at a restaurant where food ranges from $100- over $1000. We don’t just take orders, we pack, get sides, make a good amount of the food all while being super busy at the same time. Of course tips aren’t expected but let’s say working on a $4000 order with just me and 1 other person with not even a $5 gratuity is cruel. Because while working on that order, along with other orders at the same time is very frustrating. I’ve worked at my job for over 5 1/2 years and I truly love it. Great people, great environment, great guests for the most part. It’s just there’s so much that you can’t see that we truly do when placing an order online. Someone literally tipped 68 cents one time evening out their total and I was still grateful. Some selfish people would be like “that’s it?” Or “so cheap” but Im like ” I appreciate that man” because it’s still something. If you tip in card a parentage goes to the cooks too, and if you don’t want that you can always tip cash that just goes to take out but the cooks do a lot of work too. Anyway. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah. Tipping a person telling you you look good in a dress is ridiculous. Only tip if you want to first off but also realize what are you even tipping for when they don’t do as hard of work as restaurant employees. And I mean real restaurants not drive thrus although they do good work too. Idk I’m sorry this is just my opinion
