For the 2022 tax year, the maximum amount is $14,398 federally (increasing to $15,000 for 2023). If one spouse earns less than the basic amount, the other spouse is eligible for the Canada caregiver amount for spouse or common-law partner, or eligible dependant age 18 or older.

The marriage penalty arises when married couples pay more in taxes jointly than they would as single individuals. However, there are still marriage traps lurking in the tax code, such as income over $139,350 being taxed at a 28% rate. If one spouse’s out-of-pocket medical expenses exceed 7.5% of their individual adjusted gross income (AGI), they might be eligible for the Adoption Tax Credit.

Married couples receive a variety of tax benefits, including a lower tax bracket, combined federal estate and gift tax limit, the possibility of a spousal IRA, and increased standard deductions. Married couples can also double the deductions by filing jointly, reducing their taxable income by $27,000.

  • Amazing article, thank you so much for all of the information that finally became clear to me. I am wondering though what happens to my assets as a foreigner, who is married to an american citizen. Will the US govermnent be after my income or assets by default? Would appreciate a link if you have a article on this subject. Thank you!

  • Interesting. Starting to wonder about this, as my S/O is a high earner, roughly 3 times what I make, and may put us jointly into the 35% bracket, and move her out of the 32%, and me out of the 22%, or 24% depending on how my sidehustle works out this year. LOL, “Usually a good thing” !!! Will look for the second article.

  • The main reason marriage fails is the lack of common ideals between spouses. Too many opposites attract, which probably causes 99% of those marriages to fail. My wife and I were pretty much on point for all the major life decision categories, so that’s why it has worked for 14+ years. Back in 1960, a woman had to get married if she wanted a better life due to sexism in the work place causing low paying wages and lack of opportunities. Yes, it still exist. Just nowhere as prominent as back then. College is more accessible now as well to everyone, which is why the age of marriage is much later as people are in school until their early to mid-20s and need a few years to get a career going.

  • I own a four bedroom 3 full bath home in Hawaii. A brand new 2022 lexus. I walk around in my boxer briefs, sleep and wake up when I want. I save a ton of money because I spend it on me. If your argument about why you should get married is money over love, that’s sad. Divorce is absolutely devastating, but can’t happen unless you do something as dumb as getting married.

  • well, in 1960, a 22 year old man made enough money to aford a house and a car and to pay all of their bills without the herlp of a spouse. thats not the case now. both have to work or one has to be really succesfull and even then its frowned upon by some people if the woman wants to work and its frowned upon by some people if the woman doesnt want to work and vise versa.

  • I’m thankfully married to what has been a good wife, but I’m strongly encouraging my sons to never marry. This is due to the present gynocentric family court system and total scarcity of marriageable women in the US. Marriage is a benefit for women, children, and attorneys. It is terrible for men as an investment today, and I’m not perpetuating that lie to watch my boys suffer. Marriage is grand. Divorce is 100 grand.
