How Much Is Akinis Bride Price?

The bride price is a traditional wedding custom in Kenya, where the groom or his family offers a sum of money to the bride’s family before marriage. It is often seen as a way to compensate for the loss of their daughter’s labor and fertility. In Kenya, the bride price typically starts at around $3,000 USD for a woman of her education. However, Benjamin, who has been struggling financially, decided to pay the bride price, which is based on factors such as tribe, the bridegroom’s status, the bride’s education, and the groom’s negotiating prowess.

A 1992 PNG government survey found that bride price occurs in about two-thirds of all households, sending a message that women are property, increasing the likelihood of domestic violence. In South Africa, bride prices are being translated from traditional values to hard currency by setting the cost of cattle payable by cash ranging from a symbolic R100 ($14) to the current market value.

In Afghanistan, almost all weddings start with a bride price. A dowry, also known as a bride price or bridewealth, was a payment made by a man as a gift to the family of a woman he desired to be his wife. In Japan, mail-order brides believe it is easier to find a partner online and more convenient and practical.

The bride price is meant not only to honor the bride but also to express gratitude for her. In the end of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 3, fans were left shocked when Benjamin decided to pay the bride price.

Do you pay a dowry?

Dowry: Money or goods given to a bride by her family. In the Roman Empire, the bride’s family gave money to the groom or his family to help pay for the bride’s living expenses. In some cultures, the groom gives a gift to the bride or her family on marriage. In others, the bride gives a gift to the groom or his family. The dowry can be a gift to the in-laws or insurance for the bride. It’s something she can keep if she gets divorced. Other terms for this are “bride price” or “bridewealth.” Over time, some families used the dowry system to exploit others. What was meant to be a gift and promise of security soon became a demand that resulted in broken engagements, divorce, violence, and even death. These countries made dowries illegal. Today, the dowry is more informal and casual. It is especially common among members of the African and South Asian diasporas. It’s a way to keep traditions alive and honor a couple’s culture.

What is the dowry in Africa?

The amount of bridewealth a family can pay shows how well off they are and how much they can support the groom. Bridewealth is insurance for the bride’s family. If the family is in trouble, they can rely on the groom’s family. Some academics believe that bridewealth leads to marriage stability because the brides family will pressure the daughter to stay married if the payment was significant. In contrast, other African communities such as many Moroccan ethnic groups participate in a custom called “dowry.” The bride’s family gives her gifts to use in her new home. The Yoruba people of Nigeria have traditional marriage customs. The Yoruba combine traditional Yoruba marriage customs (like arranged marriages and bridewealth) with Christian and Islamic ceremonies. Marriage is seen as the foundation of their society, not just a bond between two people in love. They learn from a young age that marriage is about taking responsibility and having children. Children are taught that families built on love and attraction risk damaging their community. It is believed that marriage is about having children and providing them with a good environment. Parents decide when their children are ready to marry. The Yoruba say, “When a child is ready for marriage, they are given a marriage.”

  • that was terrible of Akini to put Ben on the spot that way by asking him for “her gift” She should have told him before he came that it is customary to bring a gift. She is very immature and her baby voice irritates me like nails on a chalkboard. He should have said he had no idea that a gift was expected but now that he is there he wants to take her shopping for her small gift. That may not be a good idea cuz she probably expects a $500.00 gift.

  • Actually, I completely agree with her! It’s so surprising to see so many young ladies in the comments saying ” He is your gift, he came for you”. He came to see her for the first time in life and could have bought flowers, chocolates, something from the U.S. for her and her family. I used to date a guy from another country and even when I went to visit him, I brought like a tons of presents for his parents and cousins. It’s all about a good treatment and your effort. She didn’t ask for cars or other things, just for simple romantic gestures. If that is called to be a high maintenance and gold digging, then I’m the one hahah

  • lol as a Kenyan I can confirm this is NOT how the first meeting commonly takes place. As for the gifting, it’s not well depicted here. Considering as part of our culture, gifting is highly valued but NOT mandatory as it is a sign of courtesy to bring something (irregardless of what/how much it is) when visiting someone’s house be it a relative, neighbor or friend. And yes I’ve watched the whole show and understood Ben’s financial situation. So basically you can’t blame or bash them for asking for gifts since they expected it as per the norm.

  • Akinyi gives Benjamin a cheap little gift and says, “So, where’s my gift?” She puts him on the defensive, embarrasses him, and corners him. In order to take charge, all he had to do was say, “Your gift is sitting right here on the couch next to you.” Instead, he blew it and lets her win round one! Akinyi says, “This means he did not think about me when he was coming.” She immediately takes charge with her flawed logic. This poor guy is in big trouble.

  • Girl continue going to school, develop yourself, contribute to your country and enjoy your life. This white American man is not rich. He does not have much and he has left his country to meet you. Your expectations at this point should be equal to stage of life you are at. You have not created that package of a self-built woman to bring something substantial in this man life and perhaps if you have built yourself you wouldn’t want this American guy. Keep rolling and empower yourself….it is what it is..he does not have much to offer but he is looking for a good time in Kenya!!

  • Run. Girl. Run. Benjamin ain’t it. He’s broke, only has 2k in the bank, has child support, an ex wife. He could have spent $50 on a nice gift. You mean to tell me you spent all of this money to go to Africa & meet this woman and propose and you didn’t even think to get her a gift??? That’s a red flag. Throw that fish back in the sea just like Larissa should have done when Colt showed up at the airport with no flowers. A cheap man is the worst type of husband 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

  • I’m Kenyan too and actually from Nairobi where they’re filming this and most Kenyans think people that live in America are rich. Anyone that visits in Kenya has to bring presents it’s customary there. It’s actually so weird perusal this ep because it’s my homeland and the brother is being so mean to. Him but it’s seriously the culture/ she should’ve told him about these things before he arrived. Kenyans don’t believe in divorce. You marry one and done. That’s why they have a bride price. The parents are about to ask for at least $10,000 and some cows and goats. I’m not playing. This relationship is doomed.

  • yes true ik im late but ik its culture and every thing but he said before he never date a person so far so maybe he didnt know about there culture and she never mention it to him so i understand if he didnt get her anything the fact that he even showed up should be enough cuz thats alot of money on plane fares etc..he is not obligated to get her any thing the fact that she Asked is mind blowing she didnt even waited to see and she puy him in the hot seat and she knew he needed to impress her brother

  • It’s actually a common practice in countries outside of the US to give small gifts to the people you are visiting. Typically a souvenir from your home country. It doesn’t have to be lavish but it’s a sign of respect and a thank you to them for letting them stay at their house. We don’t have this practice in the United States. When my friends from other countries visit me and stay in my house they ALWAYS bring me a gift. When I travel to visit them. I give them a gift.

  • That anyone expects us to believe that Ikinyi and her family would EVEN THINK OF TURNING AWAY AN AMERICAN…so flipping hysterical. They are salivating. Benjamin is a hefty upgrade to what I’m into might be able to attract in Nairobi. They are all looking at Ben like a prized goose. The lotto… The poorest American is wealthy in comparison. 🤷‍♀️

  • He didn’t have too get her an expensive gift.. he says how much he loves her but couldn’t get her a little gift from his culture! She got him one and I doubt it’s custom to bring one, it’s just a kind thing !! I’m British & if I was meeting someone for the first time I’d at least expect flowers or something! Same thing happened with colt & Larissa. You Americans wasn’t raised with romance or respect I see.

  • The whole point of him going there was to see her and she is gonna say he wasn’t thinking of her because he didn’t bring her vanity, he brought himself that should have been enough and even if u were expecting to get something then wait until he presented it to you or when your alone in your own privacy then u can ask if u had brought u anything smh ah boy.

  • In Kenyan culture it is always customary to bring a gift when you meet people. Even going to your relatives house or to a friends house we usually bring gifts. Even if it’s just some juice or flour or even fruits we always do. So it wasn’t offensive of her to expect one, plus he is coming to meet someone he will hopefully propose too I mean he could’ve got her anything even if it was small.

  • Man I was thinking run when she said Benjamin would be staying with her older bro. I think it’s very rude not to at least tell him before he got there because he wasted $$ in an Airbnb. Plus anyone who’s ever flown international knows how exhausting that is! We woulda broke up cause I woulda told her I needed to recoup lol

  • Ouch, that must have been so overwhelming for Benjamin who strikes me as being introverted and not very experienced with dating. I hope the girl didnt think too low of him for no gift, maybe gift giving isnt his love language and he had nobody at home to advise him that buying something is appropriate. It probably never crossed his mind, not because he doesnt care but because its not something hes had done for him or had to do for anyone before. He is learning how to date like a small child learns to make friends, trial and error. Girl has to teach him her needs so he can step up into manhood 🙂

  • I don’t understand why he spent the night with her just because they were married “by word of her parents”. I mean you’re a pastor! You kept away from her physically citing no pre marital sex, by which i thought getting married in the church in the eyes of God! You’re not married by means of a simple bride price deal ugh. Didn’t expect this from Benjamin.

  • I’m African myself, but I’m glad I come from a family that doesn’t believe in extravagant dowries. My father told me we should never demand too much from future suitors because no amount of money would ever replace what has been spent on a bride from birth. Unfortunately not everybody thinks like the my family. I’m Igbo, and I knew several women who were not allowed to marry certain men because their fathers didn’t think they were wealthy enough, and I knew fathers who would force their own daughters to marry rich illiterates because they were loaded. And I can understand Akinyi’s reluctance to discuss their wedding night on camera – African women are more liberal than ever, but they still have their reservations.

  • people should also consider that a girl from a conservative culture like this might be really nervous being expected to talk about sex in front of a TV camera … I honestly don’t know how she feels but it’s very possible that, even if she has genuine feelings for him, it’s not the sort of thing she feels like it’s appropriate to be public about.

  • I’m an African living in north america and embarrassed by Akinyi and her family. In africa, marriages are conducted by patriarchs of BOTH families. Not once did Akinyi’s family ask to speak with Ben’s family. The father is a pastor? He did not mention a desire for a church wedding. What i heard was “..life is expensive..” and Ben should come up with more money for the dowry. Your daughter was willing to give herself away by tempting Ben. YOUR house in not in order sir! Remember what happened to Eli and his sons. Poor Ben was manipulated into a traditional wedding, which unbeknownst to him, can be voided by return of the bride price and gifts. It is not recognized unless you go to the courts to legalize it! I’m unimpressed by these people.

  • This is sad for him and her…I can’t! Someone needs to run him or her just run.hell.I ran and I was madly in love with my fella..he just hurt my feelings and I had to go…I just left and couldn’t hear no bullshit from my him..I loved him..but this shit is uncomfortable Ben and Akinyi deserve better..
