(I know it isn’t like Savannah can call into the prison.) What a helpless feeling. Also, it is eerie to know that Nic posted just hours before the accident. Several years ago, one of my classmates sent me a birthday message and also posted on FB several hours prior to his shift at a restaurant, where his son also worked. An inebriated patron complained about his food order or service. He became physical and proceeded to shoot a gun, and my friend and his son were both struck. Reports said Roy was attempting to protect his son, and Roy’s injuries were fatal. I didn’t generally watch local, early-morning news. Because I was sick and didn’t sleep well, I woke early the day after my birthday. When the news mentioned the restaurant, I braced myself as I waited to hear names and my worst fears were realized. Fast forward to January 2021 when my only sibling (my brother, who was my best friend) was in the hospital with COVID. He had leukemia and he had battled it for some time, but that didn’t kill him. (Once again, I was left with a painful memory of a birth day. My brother called from the ICU to wish me a happy birthday. He had been told they would likely intubate him that evening because he had developed pneumonia and they were unable to maintain therapeutic oxygen levels with the cannula.) I never believed he wouldn’t bounce back, but that’s what happened.
