📹 How I’ve Overcome My Gambling Addiction
It’s been 15 years since I turned 18 and began gambling my life away. The addiction never truly stopped – I just found a way to …
I have an addiction, it is killing me. I have 22,000 dlls in debt now on my credit cards and have no money in my bank account. I owe money to friends and family and the worst thing is that I won 3,000 dlls this weekend and lost them again. I am desperate, I cant sleep, I am in a bad mood all the time and currently I hate life and no one knows about it and I can’t tell no one. I just hope that I can return to this article one year from now and that my life will be better, debt and betting free. Wish me the best if anyone reads this, I hate myself. I am sick
I’ve been a social gambler for six years, and it was nothing crazy until now. The last two months are a nightmare. I’m currently in debt to my brother and my mother. Yesterday I’ve gambled my salary away which I was working really hard for, working overtime for it. Last weeks my thoughts were only focused on cutting my losses by placing a correct bet on the correct soccer game. The only way to cut losses though is to stop betting and focus on your job. God bless everybody!
I’m in tears because I fully understood every emotion he described. I haven’t fallen as far but I think I was brought to this article prevent that fall. When I (on rare occasion) get up the guts to gaze upon the box of lost scratch tickets, I wish I could take it all back. Not even a million dollar win could fill the hole those cards only made worse in me.
As an addict with teh roulette that completly change my mind, I absolutely regret spending each single dollar on the casino. Even though a part of me sill thinks that if ai bet i’ll win for sure, the rational part is taking over and saying:” don’t do that you will lose and you could save and spend it with more productive things. I thank you so much for changing my mind!
What an amazing story. I sit at a slot machine as a way to unplug from the world for awhile. I dont lose a lot and even occasionally win (or at least thats what i tell myself) but perusal this article i see so many similarities especially with the time im not spending with my family im ashamed of myself. The people in my life deserve better
I really would like to say thank you 🙏 for this amazing speech. It’s just like listen the story about myself. I have 3 beautiful children and a lovely wife who is always right next to me. I know that I am pushing them away, loosing them every time when I gamble. Loosing money, dreams and everything I love, my family. I wish to be strong like you.
I am struggling at this moment trying to find the will to dig myself & my family out of this hole I created. It took a lot to finally admit my addiction. I just need to find the strength to stay the straight path and not stray. The temptation is real but my family is what I need to remember to motivate me to quit.
God bless you! I needed this so badly today. My husband of 21 yrs has a big secret. I have asked him if he had gotten in over his head. I told him he could tell me and I would be right beside him fighting this beast with him. He WILL NOT admit it. He gets mad at me. We have nothing left of our once magical relationship and friendship. I’m lost. I don’t know what to do.
After a similar story, on deferent specifics, I too climbed out of the hole that I dug and put my family and myself in. Priorities HAD to change. This isnt about having stuff….owning more….making more. The selfishness that I lived makes me sick today. Am thankful that my wife didnt take my family away from me….that was now 7-1/2 years ago. What an amazing family that I have the opportunity to be a part of. I also learned not to be so judgmental of others in difficult situations, even if it was caused by poor and self destructive actions. I can assure you that it can happen to anyone given the right circumstances and frame of mind. Wont bore anyone with the details, but life is not only better now, its better than its ever been. Even so, I wouldnt wish that path on anyone
Went to the casino a few days ago with $60. Left with $750. Went back the next night and won again, another $650. $1400 I had. Went back tonight, lost everything. Absolutely torn up about it. Such a rush, but the self loathing hurts the most. Don’t gamble, use that money for something nice. Something you can use, be proud of.
Strangely enough, a HUGE part of the addiction is becoming addicted to LOSING – its easy to think its all about that rush you get in that moment while its all on the line, but its more about LOSING…you dont realize it at 1st, or while its happening, or maybe right after the dust settles, but eventually you realize that you had been addicted to that massive rush of losing – losing $ you needed for bills, $ you needed to pay someone back, all of it, and once you realize THAT part of the addiction, and the lies/sneaking around/etc you have to go through to maintain it have dominated your life, you can at least START to put it behind you…
I’ve waged about 70k this month from just winning and losing bets, I’ve won just as much back as I’ve lost so in reality I haven’t lost anything, maybe 500 gain or loss if anything, i started with about 1k in my account and have just gone up and down throughout the month, it is very scary hearing his story because this could become anyone who gambles, I will come back to this article anytime I feel like I am losing myself
Yesterday I finally got myself to push the big block button. Not a temporary block this time that I’ve been doing for the last couple of years, which always causes a relapse once it ends, but permanent this time. I’m feeling a mixture of emotions, which includes guilt and the losses, but also there is euphoria and the fact that I’m finally free and there will be no more losses ever again. And my addiction also began with a £5 free bet.
It’s true, I won in one night playing around 4 hours in 3000 dollar machines, with small bets and I thought this is my day, I started betting big and lost everything in minutes…. worse was the feeling of guilt knowing I I could have gone with a sum that would have changed my economy for many months… addiction is not always visible, it is difficult to accept it, and most can tell you to stop going to the casino and it’s over… but your brain works on you the mind…
After the cash advances multiple loans and pawning my stuff I’m left with 15$, that was last night . I came clean to my girlfriend and brother I got lucky and they were supportive of me realizing my addiction, they are helping me get my items out of the pawn shop and paying back my cash advances . I get one more chance to fix it I hope I can quit I’m starting today wish me luck
I haven’t lost quite as much, I’d still guess it’s somewhere north of 100k but this hits home hard. The self exclusion helps but the only true way to stop is from within. To reach rock bottom you see everything as clear as day, from there it is one day at a time. The road may not be straight forward but in time, life gets back on track. TALK to somebody, the worst part is trying to go through the journey alone.
One time I won $800 at the casino. I knew I should go home. However I told myself ” hey let me play just $100 of this. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn a good night into a great night. If I lose, who cares, I can then leave with a really good $700. However after losing the $100, now I say to myself ” ehhh I couldddd try just $100 more. If I lose that I’ll leave with that remaining $600. Still a heckuva day right? ” Well next thing I know I’m down to $300 and my thought process changes to ” omg I can’t leave with a measley $300 when I had a really nice $800 three hours ago!!! I absolutely HAVE to get that $500 back!!! Then I’ll be back to $800 and THIS TIME I’ll leave ( supposedly ) ” Down to $200, down to $100, down to $20. Need gas but say screw it, down to $0. Now I want to puke and/or kick myself in the nuts. Mentally exhausted, stressed out, sickening feeling as I have a walk of shame to my car 😢😭😡🤬🤮
Thanks to yor inspiring messege this thing is ruining so many peoples lifes including myself but l do understand u when u mentioned about asking for help secondly this nation should ban this kind of business its causing a lot of seperations of families and the people who suffers most are the kids l need help.
lost around £9000 in the last 7 months, last bet was on 31 oct 2020, never gonna play that sh*t again. pls guys stop if you’re still playing right now, it is so bad for your health, mentality, etc. just don’t do it, if you’re winning right now just cash out immediately or else you’re gonna lose all of it in a split second
Great article… for anyone who wants to stop, take it from my experience..u need to reach out and get tharapy 1 way or another because keeping it to urself and trying to stop by urself when your deep into the addiction…..will beat you everytime if your a pathalogical gambler, also if u do stop… never be complacent…remember this, 1 bet is too much and 1000 bets is never enough…god bless
I wanna share something i never shared…in 2017 august i gambled 3000$ in a day and lost…my girlfriend kept on saying no but i did…she got angry and didnt speak for a week but she forgave me as she couldnt leave me alone…things got better and the love was same again but 3 months later she died…
I am literally just going to the devastating path that he said (but due to his confession which I am having trouble to make to my mom ) but now I am in debt of 2000US$ don’t know how to pay it back still thinking to gamble but I am reminded by him that what is going to happen. Deeply thanking him for his guidance.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Government should create jobs and get taxes created from profit of actual value and not using tax collected from betting offices which is people’s hard earned money .It is the government who should be made responsible. The same goes for the profit the goverment made from selling pharmaceutical drugs alcohol and cigarette. Everyone is suffering and choked by the idiotic habits which should be hiding way from sight and not being advertised like a coolest thing as part of perusal a soprt game. I would ban Betting advertisement during a match as the enjoyment of the game is being linked with the name of the betting companies, So our minds are being dangerously tricked, First step to end this is to really ban any harmful companies or betting shops being advertised during matches or at least on the TV Ot made is believing that gambl8ng is as much enjoyment as perusal a great game, Then football playing horse riding tennis would become just like any other entertainment job or healthy sport activity and not a source of extreme Danger. So keep safe and educate your
I’ll bet if you are not taking some medication for a chemical imbalance, you still have an urge in the back of your head. I did too and if I choose to gamble, and I don’t anymore, the first thing I do is Identify who playing has that imbalance and take advantage of the fact that they don’t have control at that moment. So let me explain myself as someone who was clinically diagnosed as a “Pathological” Gambler and I don’t remember the last time i made a bet. Your sub conscious does not understand consequence, it just does whatever it can to re balance the chemicals. Unfortunately our bodies release more Adrenalin with other chemicals with a loosing hand then it does with a winning hand. Then you find yourself rationalizing a reason to play a hand you know has a low probability of winning because the chemicals your sub conscious need get spiked with the losing. At the end of the run you will always be broke even if you are an expert player because you don’t consciously have control until you fix the imbalance. I hope this made sense and best wishes.
I’m super angry at my dad right now. He had won about 10k just 5 days ago, and he promised to stop because he had reached his goal. But then today he just lost all 10k! I don’t know if it’s my fault, I told him to die this morning before he went to the casino and lost the 10k. I was extremely angry at him for very small thing because I have serious anxiety plus depression. I wonder if I had made him so angry that he lost his mind… My dad just asked his friend to borrow 250 dollars to gamble again, but his friend said that he doesn’t have much money. I’m typing this while my dad is at the casino btw…
Today in the share market i gambled without any more knowledge and sold all holding in that emotion to avg that and lost 3L it was all my savings from past 3 years Now i am perusal this article and trying to stop gamble with money and most of it was of my dad who gave me to invest and now i dont know what i should do 🙃
When I was 12, I spent $20 on a stacking game trying to win a Playstation. Didn’t win, obviously. But it must have been a blessing. If a game only makes you lose, you won’t play it. A decade later I get a lottery ticket from a coworker. Still lost. Still a victory to me. …frankly, the only real gambles I ever make are comments on YouTube.
Give the player a chance to see the reality of their ways and have a casino chaperone available. A person accompanying with a card displayed visible around their neck that shows they are not to play but can be the holder of casino chips and cash. The player plays normally and the chaperone says when they are to stay or leave. The casino makes sure the chaperone only doesn’t play. If the chaperone needs assistance from the security, then the security and management of the casino will back up the chaperones advice before applying any lawful measures.
The worst thing a newbie betting can do is to win with the first bet. I’ve seen many do it and think it is easy money… only to lose the next few bets, then more. Rather than walk away they then chase their losses without understanding the mathematics of the game. But don’t blame the operators, people are responsible for their own actions. A recent report claimed that 0.03% of people have a problem/addiction, suggesting that 99.97% of people don’t. Help is at hand for those who need it.
It’s hard for me to feel any kind of empathy towards an ex member of the British paratroopers. This is due to their behaviour here in Northern Ireland, and especially the time I myself almost got shot by them in their quest to teach us native Irish a lesson. It was a scary incident. However, when I here this man’s story of struggle (self inflicted though it may be), I see that behind every enemy is a struggle of their own. We all have our struggles in life! If we listened to each other more we’d all live happier.

I’ve asked this question to around 6 – 7 different employees who service/maintain slot machines at the casino I go to in my state (not an Indian casino, owned by the county). I’ve also asked few employees who walk around and payout the handpays. “Will a slot machine ever go in the negative?” Every single person said they will not, meaning it needed to already take in the money before paying it out. I never agreed with that.
I saw this article two days ago after losing a moderately huge amount of money. Well guess what? I sold my phone today just to gamble it all away. I have betrayed the trust of my parents and my girlfriend because I lied about going to fix the phone instead of selling it. Now I realize I am really addicted and from today onward, I hope to quit betting for good. I’ll hopefully update this every month or when I remember. If you read this, leave a good word for me to remind me of this promise I have made.
No, it’s the consistent losing without winning and the increasing depth of the hole you have dug yourself into that destroys the gambler. If you ever hear anyone say they are a ” professional gambler” I’ll show you a woman or man who is a liar and broke …both as in financially and as a productive, happy and healthy human being.
As long as you’re playing it getting worse day after day believe me guys to day is better to quit then tomorrow, I had quited to day, although I relapsed many times but this time im committed I lost everything, I nearly lost my self in suicide, I’m still living with the weight of accumullated debts, but I hope I will find a way to pay back.
Can I please get some help also, last year I attended therapy session that seemed to work for me but since the lockdown I have fallen to that trap also. In the last 3 months I have managed to get myself to just over 50k debt, and yesterday I lost all my salary with out even settling on bill. I’m in South Africa 🇿🇦 by the way. I don’t know where to go because my credit record is now in the bad state. And I need to buy food for my family and my 3 month old baby 👶 girl. I’m so angry at myself I can’t even look at myself in the mirror. The time is after 1 am but I cannot sleep
I’ve got addictive personality too! I’ve lost my girlfriend for 3 years in 2020 because alcoholism & instead of stop drinking I’ve add another addiction on top with gambling! I can see my family is suffering but I can’t stop it! I’m trying my best to get out it! It’s been couple of weeks I’ve didn’t gamble or drank! Instead I’ve help my family!

I won a total of 7100 dollars today, and I lost a lot of it in the end. I think I’m 1000 dollars minus. (Blackjack) pro tip btw, don’t play poker on your phone for fun. It can escalate. I warn you guys because I care. Stay away from it. I luckily have a lot of money and good economy. and that’s why I gotta stop now while I still can.
