In traditional etiquette, a woman’s name preceded a man’s on an envelope address. For formal envelopes, write the name of your guest or guests on the first line on the front of the envelope. Use Mr., Mrs., and the surname family at the top of the address. When addressing an envelope to an entire family, start by putting your contact information at the top.
There are three components to addressing an envelope: the recipient’s address, the return address, and the postage. In the U.S., it is important to use appropriate titles when addressing a couple. If the couple is married, use “Mr.” for the husband and “Mrs.” for the wife. If the couple is unmarried or prefers a more gender-neutral title, use “Mr.” and “Ms.” for both individuals.
For personal letters and greetings, use their first and last name with or without titles. For example, if the wife is a PhD and the husband is a doctor, the envelope would be addressed as “Dr. and Mrs.”
In the US, when addressing a married couple, use “Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brown” or “Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Brown.” In Germany, the custom is different, but the correct response is “Herr Doktor und Mag. Thomas Brown.”
For heterosexual couples, use “Mr.” and “Mrs.” and spell out the husband’s first and last name. For married couples with the same last name, use “Mr.” and “Mrs.” and spell out the husband’s first and last name.

How do you address Mr or Mrs?
Mr. and Mrs. are titles or honorifics used before a person’s name to show respect. Mr. is used before the names of men and boys, and Mrs. is used before the names of married women. The contraction “Mr.” has been used since the 1500s. Mr. was a short form of master, used for men of high authority. By the 18th century, Mr. and Mister were separate from master and became common ways to address men of higher social rank.
The contraction Mrs. also dates back to the 1500s. It was used as a shortening of mistress, a title for women of high rank or the female head of a household. Eventually, Mrs. and Missus became distinct words from mistress and were used to refer to married women of higher social rank. Do you know of any gender-neutral alternatives to Mr. or Mrs.? Is it the future Mr. and Mrs. or Future Mr. and Mrs.?
If you know the woman is taking her husband’s name, you can call them “The Future Mr. and Mrs.” If you’re not sure, use the rules for an unmarried couple living together. When inviting a family, you can list the family name or the parents’ names and children’s names. If someone has a medical degree, use the word “doctor.” If they have a PhD, use “Dr.” as their honorific. If the wife is a doctor, list her first with her title. If the names are too long, list them separately. If a doctor’s wife takes her husband’s last name, it’s proper to use “The Doctors.”
