To arrange a bouquet of roses, follow these five steps from House Beautifuls Style Director, Robert Rufino, and Klair McDermott. Start by adding the largest flowers first, working in a circle and turning the vase as you go to ensure a symmetrical arrangement. Layer in the next variety of flowers and repeat until all flowers have been added. Finish the arrangement by adding greenery, grasses, or berries.
For clear vessels, use clear floral tape. Trim the ends of the roses at a 45-degree angle with sharp gardening shears. Add water to the vessel and add a single package of preservative solution. When arranging roses in a vase or other container, ensure it is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before use. Cut a little more off the rose stems every few days.
Start with greenery as a base, such as Eucalyptus, ivy, and fern fronds, creating an inverted triangular shape. Prepare your container by filling it with fresh, cold water to prolong the life of the blooms. Remove all foliage from the flowers that will end up below the waterline of your chosen vessel.
In summary, arranging roses involves starting with the largest flowers first, layering them in a circular fashion, and finishing with greenery, grasses, or berries.

What is the 3:5-8 rule in floristry?
One of our European designs is called the Form Linear. We apply flowers using the 3:5:8 rule, with three main focal groups.
3 = Sub-dominate Group/Placement; 5 = Contrasting Group/Placement; 8 = Dominate Group/Placement. This mathematical sequence is delivered to the intermediate students because it can be confusing to discuss proportions in this amount of detail to less knowledgeable learners. These proportions are for floral arrangements with few materials. We create voids to make space. Some learners know they need space between flowers, but they also need to know why the materials have been placed in this particular balance. The 8-placement is the dominant group of flowers, with the 3-placement providing a smaller, less formal material. The 5-placement lets the eye follow the line from the dominant placement to another material with contrasting flowers. As the chosen materials get more impactful, the form and line become more dominant. The greater the number, the more dominant it becomes. It’s technical and mathematical! How do you use math in your work? What tools do you use?

Such detailed explanations of so many things I had questions about. I wrote down so many things you said. Thank you for the awesome content, can’t wait to see more articles from you!
LMAO I Was waiting to hear people say that! “They charge and are counting every stem” =-/ I used to work under those conditions and I have to say….Boy am I glad I dont anymore…Anyways you are the best THANK YOU. You have taught me everything I know and I became a top designer and now have my dream job in one of the best flower shops (very High class) that I always wanted to work at. I owe it all to you! Thank you for making me a “diva” as some of my old bosses called me as I would refuse to do my arrangements any other way=-) Thank you sincerely
Michael, I got inspired by you. I was originally thinking of enrolling in your school but it is too far for me. So I enrolled here in Canada in my home base in Vancouver last July. They taught us a lot about gridding with tape. I notice your style, you don’t do that. Unfortunately, while taking the class, I developed allergies. I don’t know what plant or flower or pollen brushed onto my skin. I suffered the whole time. I took a step back and stop for now as I am trying to heal my skin. I’m thinking of wearing a hazmat suit next time. Lol!
It’s pretty, but there’s still too many gaps and don’t care how much green you have if you don’t have enough filler And your first tear of roses is not evenly spaced, so there is one huge gap on the second and first tear, which makes it look like crap that’s why you use filler flowers Now to the uneducated people which I’ve only had four weeks in floral at a grocery store ha ha So I can’t say that I’m an expert, but I definitely have had four weeks more training than the consumer And I’m not impressed with what they’re doing at the grocery store they literally do not care about the flowers. They do not care about the customers they care about the customers money and they will put crappy looking product on the floor and to my surprise, people are actually buying It, The consumer buckets were people can pick their own bunches and put together their own arrangements at home do pretty good. The pre-arranged bouquets in the cooler on the side of the consumer buckets is really a hit or miss so a lot of those are chopping arrangements that are put in the refrigerated case for customers who wish to grab and go And then there’s the potted plants which there is way too many of difficult to reach because they’re all clumped and condensed together so maintenance is very difficult And a lot of them come from the growers already route bound, dehydrated and because the root bound they can’t drink so they need to be immediately repotted And they’re charging an arm and a leg and they beef rated flowers which means the premium flowers are going to the florists and of course you guys are paying for it so you have to charge your customers I’m a very quick study and I’m not impressed with the world being motivated by money as opposed to by quality and integrity But I do very much appreciate your contribution and helping me to grow and what I’m currently pursuing, which is just not satisfying because it’s not what I thought it would be to do flowers would be the absolute best of the best and they will be treated with a lot of love and care preconditioned put in clean buckets, not overcrowded like they do everywhere else so that the flowers are getting the water, the nutrition and circulation that they need that way the end product is that much more fabulous, and that alone can increase your prices even be rated flowers Loves sparkles like nothing else
