Bustling your wedding dress can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s an easy-to-follow guide on bustling your dress. Bustles are sewn into the fabric of the dress, and they can be used in various ways, such as using satin ribbons or decorative ties, snap fasteners, velcro strips, or Bobby Pins.
One of the most effective methods for bustling your dress without sewing is using a fishing line, which is transparent and also known as a fishing line. Traditional, French, and Over Bustles are some of the options available for bustling your dress. The French bustle utilizes a fold technique with hidden fasteners beneath the skirt, while the Austrian Bustle is a pretty option but not commonly used due to its compatibility with not every wedding dress.
Train-Flip Bustles give the illusion of no bustle at all, but the train of the dress flips under the fabric and is pinned into itself once the wearer moves in a crowd. There are different types of bustles, and there is no right or wrong way to bustle a dress. Some popular options include the French bustle, which doesn’t ruin the beautiful clean lines of the dress, and the Train-Flip Bustle, which has a wrist loop on the underside of the dress.
In summary, bustling your wedding dress can be a simple and cost-effective way to transform your gown from elegant ceremony mode to dance-floor-ready. There are various options available, including satin ribbons, decorative ties, snap fasteners, velcro strips, and Bobby Pins. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your dress is bustled without causing any issues or affecting the overall look of your wedding day.

Can you bustle your own dress?
- Anyone who has ever gotten married can testify that weddings are incredibly expensive. Most couples look for ways to cut corners and save money, and one way you can do that is by bustling your gown yourself. Wedding dresses do not come with a pre-made bustle, but if youre handy with a needle and thread, you can learn to sew one on yourself. *Place a safety pin on the back of the dress, halfway up the length of the brides train. This is where the loop will go. Thread the needle by doubling up the thread and inserting it into the needle. Tie the end of the thread with a knot to secure it.1 *Insert the needle into the underside of the dress. Pull the thread all the way through.
- Make a small stitch and pull the thread most the way through to create a loop.
- Grab the loop with your fingers and pull the remaining thread through the loop to create a knot.
- Repeat this process until you have a loop big enough to fit your button.
- Secure the loop by running the needle and thread through the loop to tie it off.
- Insert the needle through the fabric to the other side and make two knots. Cut off any excess thread.
How to DIY bustle a wedding dress?
Attach a tie to the seam of the underside of the skirt, so that it’s not visible from the outside. Sew an eye hook to the very end of the train, concealing the hook with embroidery or beading. Attach the tie to the eye hook on the underside of the dress, pulling the tie so that the skirt bunches. With a regular bustle, the end of the train is folded under the back of the dress. This makes the hem look like a bubble and makes the back of the skirt fuller. A regular bustle may not be noticeable to others because they will think your dress has no train and a full skirt. Regular bustles are easier to create on full skirts without a lot of tulle underneath.
What is a waterfall bustle?
The waterfall bustle style is like the basic under bustle. It’s made the same way, with a loop on the outer layer and a button on the inner layer. But with the waterfall style, there are more than one row of under bustles. These rows create a waterfall effect. The waterfall bustle is soft and romantic, giving your dress a beautiful shape and detail. This style is great for dresses with long trains or lots of detail, like appliqué on the back of the skirt. Some brides choose to have their dresses permanently bustled in this style because it adds body and detail to the back.

How to bustle a wedding dress without a bustle?
This is the most common wedding dress bustle alternative I’ve seen. Ask your seamstress to sew in a wrist loop on the underside of your wedding dress. Ask for a sturdy fabric so it can handle the weight of your dress train. You can wrap this loop around your wrist on the dance floor or while hiking. This wedding dress bustle alternative works best with a moderately lightweight train. Satin or chiffon are good materials, but dresses with heavy beading weigh more, so the wrist loop wedding dress bustle alternative doesn’t work as well.
