You have three options: have the wedding as planned, postpone the event, or cancel the wedding outright. To cancel on the wedding day, update your RSVP, evaluate the situation, apologize, send a gift, and alert your wedding planner.
If you’re not sure about attending the wedding, inform the couple of your decision and mention that you will confirm at a later date. If you’re the one canceling, ask for three-four open dates and ensure they can find a date in the near future. If the venue is the one canceling, they may opt to return the deposit or cover the additional cost.
When guests have to cancel last-minute, divide what you want to both family and friends but keep it minimal to the venue, photographer, etc. Simply state you are no longer in need of the service. Craft your language carefully, being succinct and apologetic. Be honest about your reason for backing out and let it go.
When contacting the couple, give them a brief explanation and apologize without going into too much detail. Tell your family, who should be unconditionally supportive, and send out a message to all other guests. The initial main matter should be whether you want to terminate the wedding or not.
