In 1938, Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the Jazz Suite in 3/4 time. It was only after the bop waltz appeared in the early 1950s that triple meter became common in jazz. Guys, girls love it when you can sweep us off our feet with these kinds of dances. It both comes as surprise, and very romantic. We all know that part Where I come from, people seem to have forgotten these dances (only preserving them for “fancy” parties which also comes rarely, and even then the slow dances come random, penguin waddle movements). So if I ever meet a guy who can dance like the classics, I’d be interested for sure. I don’t like the modern sweet dance where everyone waddled like penguins (from experiences in prom, everyone did just that)
They did a great job. In a beginner article, they did the male and female parts seperately, then together. During the article of them dancing, one could see both sets of feet moving to his count. And- he explained the ‘up’ and ‘down’ element to the waltz which no one explains!! Great job!! And all in 5 minutes!! Actual waltz music one might hear ballroom dancing might have helped- but great job!
I am to dance with my granddaughter at her wedding next month. I’ve known their wedding date for over a year so I’ve had plenty of time to go through my extensive digitized song library to find a song. My favorite music is doo wop and as I was listening to a song called “You’re Not Too Young” by Charles McCullough & The Silks (rare and very unusual!) I realized that it is in 3/4 time – which means it a waltz! The song seemed appropriate (she’s 26) and I really like it – but I’ve never waltzed in my life – and neither has she. So here I am – seeing If I/we can pull it off. Let the practicing begin!
Outstanding article!! I am trying to learn how to Waltz so I can dance with my Beautiful Wife at our 25 year anniversary! I would like to dance to Anne Murry’s, Can I have this dance for the rest of my life. Loved that song since I first heard it in 1980 perusal The Urban Cowboy and thought how appropriate for our 25th. with my BEST Friend!!
This is great! I miss ballroom dancing. My wife doesn’t know how. Could you perhaps make some other ballroom basics articles? I (partially) remember the two-step and that it can be used with any 4/4 beat. I’ve forgotten so many simple dances. Can you refresh my memory and perhaps train some new people to join in? Don’t forget to monetize them!

Ephesians 2:8-9For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Sapagka’t sa biyaya kayo’y nangaligtas sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya; at ito’y hindi sa inyong sarili, ito’y kaloob ng Dios; Not of works, lest any man should boast. Hindi sa pamamagitan ng mga gawa, upang ang sinoman ay huwag magmapuri.
I came here because I just realised that the reason for the iconic 1-2-3 step count was because Waltz music is 3/4 beats. AND NOW I CANNOT UNHEAR THE BEAT FROM MOST CLASSICAL SONGS Edit : here are some songs I realised you can waltz to : • Je te laisserai des mots • Merry Go Round of Life • Kreisler’s Leibesleid • Kreisler’s Leibesfreud • The Last Dance (Peter Grundy) • Moonlight Sonata • Ballad for Olivia • Davy Jones Theme • Altostratus • Debutante Waltz (duh) • Kreisler’s Schön Rosmarin • Nocturnal Waltz (duh) • Isabella’s Lullaby I might have gotten some wrong but. . . I CAN’T UNHEAR.
