To decorate a wedding cake with succulents, consider the size and shape of your cake tiers and clean them thoroughly before decorating. Succulents can be used as cake toppers, decorative accents on the tiers, or as a decorative accent in the cake itself. They come in a variety of colors and can be themed from modern to rustic.
There are many ways to incorporate succulents into your cake design, such as using moss letters, placing moss and pinecones on wood logs and top them with candles, or incorporating them into candle holders for a woodland-inspired look. Pipe a variety of buttercream succulents and arrange them on a cake, and consider adding bouquets, corsages, headbands, crowns, or hair flowers to create a showstopping backdrop.
Succulents can also be used as a mane attraction, combining wedding favors and escort cards in one with small succulents to show guests where to sit. For a timeless and edgy touch, consider a succulent wedding cake.
Incorporating succulents into your cake design requires careful planning and attention to detail. With so many varieties and pretty color options, there are endless easy ways to incorporate them into your big day.

Remove the greenery before serving. We’re currently running a cake-off at the office. This week it was my turn. Check out our Instagram for pics. The competition has been tough, and the way the cakes look is as important as how good they taste. This made us think about ways to make wedding cakes look beautiful without spending a lot of time decorating them. I researched how to add berries, flowers, and greenery to cakes, and here are three simple ways to make a plain cake look more colorful. Add flowers to make a simple cake look more impressive. Peonies and roses in different colors can make a plain cake look more interesting. Simple flowers like daisies or chamomile can also look pretty on a cake without breaking the budget. Choose flowers that will last. Some flowers are pretty but not strong enough to survive out of water. Think about whether you want to use edible flowers or flowers for decoration. Pretty edible flowers include pansies, lilac, lavender, jasmine, dandelions, primrose, gardenia, marigold, and violet. Wash the flowers gently with cold water and remove the pollen. If using inedible flowers, use acetate to keep them from touching the icing. Keep your flowers fresh by using a water-filled stem holder. You can buy these in baking stores or make your own. How do you put succulents in a bridal bouquet?
I put a green wooden pick in the base of the succulent. You may need to remove some leaves from the succulent to grasp the short stem. I add a wire to secure the succulent to the pick. Then, tape it like a boutonniere or corsage. Next, I add length to the succulent by taping it to another stem. I usually use a discarded rose stem or the stem of a mum. Make sure the stem is facing the right way before you start to tape. Keep rose stems upright in your bouquet. Stems should be upright. Here’s a great taping tip: if you have something hard to grasp because it lacks a proper stem length, start the tape a little lower on the stem and wrap it up and down to secure it. This is useful for taping foliage, like seeded eucalyptus or flowers with hairpin wire. Taping first lets you cover any wire you missed. Here’s the result. The stem hides the wire and balances the weight of the succulent. You won’t have to trim wires in the middle of the bouquet! The wires are already dealt with.

2. Use herbs as greenery. This is my favorite cake decorating trick. I see eucalyptus on cakes, but it’s not food-safe, so I avoid it. Herbs make beautiful greenery accents on a cake. There are many varieties. Thyme is delicate, rosemary is stiff and pretty, and bay leaves look like rose leaves. I always use herbs over cultivated greenery.
3. Use toothpicks to insert your flowers. Many posts on adding flowers to cakes suggest taping or inserting stems into straws. I tried this a few times, but I like this toothpick method better because it leaves a smaller hole in the cake and keeps your flower from going into the cake. Cut the stem off your flower at the base and insert a toothpick. Stick the toothpick into the cake, but don’t let the flower touch it. The flower is on the cake! Watch the video below to see this in more detail.
