How To Do Makeup For Men?

A beginners guide to makeup for men offers easy tips to achieve a natural look. To start, start with a primer and use concealer to cover under-eye shadows and spots. Use BB and CC creams to maintain an even complexion, tame wild eyebrows with brow gel, define your best features with highlighter, fill beard patches with an eyebrow pencil, and use lip balms for a natural look.

To apply makeup for men, follow these seven expert tips:

1. Cleanse and moisturize your skin with a gentle formula like the CeraVe. Apply concealer for imperfections, light foundation, or BB/CC cream for an even skin tone. Run the eyeliner pencil along the edge of the lower lid and blend with a damp sponge or fingers until it’s blended into the skin.

2. Apply concealer or tinted moisturizer. Apply concealer only in the areas needed rather than the entire face and blend with a damp sponge or fingers until it’s blended into the skin.

3. Use a setting powder. Lightly dust your face with a blurring setting powder like the Maybelline New York Lasting Fix Banana Powder for a soft-focus effect and brightening complexion.

4. Use a mask for a more awake, polished appearance. L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Original Mascara is great for separating eyelashes and adding length while remaining natural-looking.

5. Facial moisturizer and lip balm are essential for maintaining a healthy skin. Start by applying a light layer of concealer and build upon coverage as needed.

  • I’m actually confused how there are women on here calling out a guy for wearing makeup.. are they the first to tell a woman she needs it? So you can make adjustments but a man can’t? Okay because that’s totally fair…. 🙄 Pretty certain we all have skin issues. And if we’re not confident about it then we have the right to do something about it. Including makeup! Skin is skin. Regardless of colour, gender etc. Grow up.

  • Funny, but I swear on my life, 100% true story: About 10 years ago when I was first dipping my toes into trying foundation to cover my bad acne scars, I had found one that I had loved that I used for over a year. You know how I found it? My sister is married to what you could describe as an extreme “Alpha Male” (big muscular hot shot lawyer), and she told me about the one he uses when he presents in court, and I loved it! She told me that he would KILL her if he ever knew she told me, but hey, bottom line is, don’t judge men for wearing make up ladies and gentlemen…fix your way of thinking first!! Thanks for reading!! 😝

  • Men with make up. ? For me it a big yess !!! I mean if it help them hide imperfections, and help them feel more confident WHY BE MAD ABOUD IT let them be.❤️And it a big yess for those how have a passion for make up and how like play with make up . There a lot of talented king of there how have some amazing skills like betmanrock look at him. He is going great. ❤️.

  • I got the flawless foundation shade 1N, somehow I find the foundation very hard to blend in. (I have lots of prestige brand brushes, and I have beauty blender too). With or without primer, the foundation just accentuate texture skin and pores. I tend to get very light cool or neutral shade foundation because I have very pale body shade (but red darker face undertone which I’m trying to balance/conceal) Sadly the flawless foundation 1N just doesn’t work. (And with mask life, its virtually impossible to try anything in Sephora store).

  • So important article! Men should also be able to use makeup everyday, without being gay, a drag queen or into a ladylike look, if you could misunderstand me the right way🙏. There is a lot of men/young boys who probably would benefit great to be able to cover up some skininperfectness, or diy the brows, hair, or lashes.. I hope the next 100 years will remove all tabues for men using beauty products, like we girls now are able to. In the early 1900, ladies where at the same point.. Now it’s the normal mens time to use makeup if they would like to

  • Love this! It’s so odd that people think makeup is just for women. I love men wearing makeup, & this guy looks great. I mean, have you even SEEN BTS?! 😍Literal gods. People who don’t ‘agree’ with men wearing makeup or have a problem with men being labelled as ‘feminine’ – why are you wasting your energy on something that annoys you so much? Go and get a hobby. Men in makeup FTW!!!

  • Charlotte, a totally flawless look for this gentleman would hide the dent in his forehead. You can achieve this bandage effect by using application(s) of black and white mascara pencils or black mascara and a lighter makeup before covering his face with applications of the Flawless Foundation color you’ve selected.

  • *jaw drops to floor, eyes pop out of sockets accompanied by trumpets, heart beats out of chest, awooga awooga sound effect, pulls chain on train whistle that has appeared next to head as steam blows out, slams fists on table, rattling any plates, bowls or silverware, whistles loudly, fireworks shoot from top of head, pants loudly as tongue hangs out of mouth, wipes comically large bead of sweat from forehead, clears throat, straightens tie, combs hair* Ahem, you look very handsome.

  • I’m a makeup artist, and one of those guys who used to always wear loads of makeup. It began because I had acne as a teenager and I just keep wearing it because I THOUGHT it still looked good. I’ve learned, now that I don’t have as much that I really don’t even need it. And even look better without it. Men’s skin is more coarse and textured and doesn’t absorb foundation properly and will always look chalky and cakey. Less is more!

  • I know I’m late to the party, but as a guy who wants to get into make up, thank you for making a super simple routine I can use to get started. The stigma around men wearing make up is ridiculous. I go to the gym, keep myself groomed, have a skincare routine and wear purfumes I like, and these things are seen as normal for making yourself attractive, but when it comes to make up, somehow (especially with heterosexual men) it’s a step too far? Fuck that. I’m excited to try out a make up routine with my girlfriend and make myself even more attractive. Thanks for this tutorial.

  • This article is extremely helpful. One time, my nephew spent the night at my house when he was around 10 years old. He knows I have an affinity for makeup so he asked if he could do my makeup. Oh he had a blast purposefully giving me a uni-brow & other unbecoming looks on me & we thought it was so funny. Well then I got to, in turn, do his makeup. Instead of getting him back, I just slightly contoured his face, put on a little blush, did his eyebrows & I think that was about it. He LOVED how handsome he looked & said he wanted to learn how. I should tell him about your website & this specific article, Wayne! He would love you, I just know it!!! What a treasure of a memory for me. I hope for him, too. I also have to say I love how he’s comfortable enough to give makeup a shot—And at age 10, nonetheless! 🎨🖌💄🤡🤣♥️

  • I start skincare and wearing make-up step by step at age 19 until now…. 23 yrs has past, I think the north amercian straight men still have trouble even doing skincare (not to mention make-up). It’s nice that you’re doing this just so straight men would know, enhance / polished your look doesn’t make you unmanly. A good foundation, concealer, highligher, eye brow and nature looking eye liner can do so much to hide imperfection and making you look so much energized.

  • Dear Wayne, have you ever made a male “no-makeup makeup” tutorial with really light products, such as cc creams instead of foundation and just some slight color correction for dark eye circles and some unwanted redness? I’d love to have a look at something like that. Thanks for all your great work and for being here for us.

  • Love it. My son is 24 and he wants to try makeup staring with eyeliner. I don’t know much about mens concealers, nor foundations. Im assuming it’s different from women’s. I’m starting to see these type of articles, to more less know what to get him and help him by guiding him. I have seen young men with just amazing natural looking makeup and I don’t know why people have such stigma. Anyhow, thanks for this tutorial. It helps for me to more less know where to start by looking at the products I can get my son. Now, His skin color is more of a tan, because i’m Mexican, and his father french Canadian. So from me, I can brag he got my skin color, thick brows and the long lashes. so I want him to truly show that handsome face of his.

  • Finally I found what I have been looking for! I use to have a baby face some say I still do but I wanted to try to fix some of my imperfections, and I’ve been looking for somebody that doesn’t want to kick their face like all the other men’s articles so I appreciate the article and when I did exactly what you showed it looked wonderful because I had no idea what I was doing and when I was doing the other ones that did not look good so this one is did so thank you!

  • This is so nice, Wayne, loved the article, love to learn from you!!! 👍 Here in this house, i have an idea that this is not gonna happen, moisturizer is already an everyday reminder for my hubby, but he’s the love of my life!😍 But beautiful, this, a freckle pen, never hear of it wow!!! And maybe you can make a (new) SPF article for not listening men for next summer? Really interesting article, thanks Wayne, sending you lots of love!!!😘😘😘😘

  • Finally this article. Thank You so much and for all the tips. I wanted to go to office and still looking fresh and bright instead of oily. Please a article where it can be on the go, fast and simplest thing to hide dark circle for men which will stay for hours and look fresh. More articles for men. I wanted to know if blended is better or brush to make it most natural without giving it away that men is wearing make up? Love your website. Glad to subscribed.

  • I think what would be even easier for a men’s natural makeup look would be best used with a tinted moisturizer. It’s less coverage than a full coverage foundation obviously. And that’s what I use on me. I don’t even like full coverage foundation cuz I don’t need much to cover up. I just like a my skin butt better look

  • Nice article – I’m a guy who also does “minimal” makeup (no one ever knows!) My current products are: NARS tinted moisturizer, and The Ordinary concealers A tiny amount of both of those go a long way in just evening my skin tone. I usually brighten the center of my face which adds the dimension back to the outer parts of my face. Question though Wayne, do you never do any skin prep e.g. moisturiser and SPF? Especially SPF as I think this is super important?

  • I have been perusal you for a very long time and I always enjoy your articles. I would like to also say that you seem to have a lot of class…. you are handsome…stylish, and if course the accent is killer. LOL! In all seriousness though I really like your articles…a lot of great tips and tricks for helping both sexes to put their very best face forward!

  • This is great. I do have a question. My skin does not get oily. Or red blemished. I have more olive like skin, but over the years my eyes have gotten quite dead and the lines around areas more pronounced. With that being said, would doing this same routine be best? What if I want a very hydrated (not matte) look?

  • Could you do a Men’s tutorial for 2022 with any new products on the market you would recommend for a no make up natural look, I know you’ve mentioned mineral makeup is good for men with beards as it doesn’t stick to the hair as one point, tho that was a article from several years ago. Am a mature lad over 50 who wants to present a healthy ‘together’ image at work, with clients and potential interviews in competing with a younger set that now uses’ product’. I’ve never used makeup but have been following your articles and working to practice to achieve the desired look and practice practice practice. I now see why there is some bad make out there, it’s not easy to achieve a no makeup, but flawless skin effect. I’ve invested in the right tools, etc. tho waiting for your brushes to come back in stock (hopefully soon). Love your tutorials and appreciate the time and effort you take to make and share with the rest of us nobs! All the best mate. Cheers

  • I hope manly men start wearing eyeliner again. So sexy! I remember in the late seventies-early eighties, some male musicians wore make up. So many did a terrible job of it, maybe they didn’t realize there is so much skill to it. Anyway they didn’t have much if any guidance and flubbed it up for men who want to wear make up. Until November 16 2021 when Wayne came out with this excellent article! Thank you!

  • I’m a guy that’s getting old and people have made me feel either ugly or invisible so I started trying makeup after perusal you (which is about the only thing that makes me smile these days) but unfortunately it hasn’t helped, now if I’m not invisible the looks are pretty much just to make fun of me without actually saying anything so apparently I’m still not doing it right but I’ll keep trying. 🙁

  • Wayne I have very light skin and have had skin cancer removed from my nose five years ago,, and I dont know if it is cancer again,,,but small red spots have re appeared,, I am a red head and 62 years old,,, I wish I knew when I was young about UV sun rays,,I have had skin cancer removed eight times from my body,, but my face is a total different thing,, I need mens make up with sun block that dont feel like a coat of varnish,,,warning to all light skin Beautiful Pale males,,STAY out the sun and if you do go out Please use sun block on your face,,,skin cancer is not fun at all it eats your skin away and bleeds and burns and it has to be cut off,,, Keep your face and neck and arms really your whole body protected,,, I now wear make up and getting ready to go back to the Dr again and hope for the very best,, I want to keep my nose,,Pray God,,,wear that sun block make up,if your a pale male and use self tanning lotions on your face I do now and it is fine wish I had known this when I was young and was in the sun way to much,,,, Pale people dont tan they burn and peel and then get skin cancer,,, stay out the sun if you do get in the sun wear sun block on your face arms and any place you dont want to get cancer,,Light Skin does not protect the suns UV rays from reaching your DNA in the skin and changing it in to cancer…use the sun block makeup

  • Doing this make-up routine every day damages the skin (spots, shine, redness) because of the toxic composition resulting from the petrochemicals of makeup products! Do you sleep well knowing that these products are ruining the skin and health of gullible buyers!!? We also deplore seeing the men ape the women… sad times 😔
