Choosing the right makeup looks for the mother of the bride and groom is crucial for their child’s big day. To achieve a natural, smooth, and dewy look, choose a light to medium coverage foundation that matches your skin tone. Neutral tones are ideal for eye makeup, and wearing waterproof mascara and selecting the right lip color can help create a glowing, natural look.
For a romantic and elegant hairstyle, consider the Braided Crown Beauty, which combines braids with a crown for a formal occasion. Hydrating skincare is essential for creating the perfect base for makeup, and using bronzer with a large brush can darken under the chin and down the neck. For those over 50, full-coverage foundations may be too heavy, so use a sheer to medium coverage foundation and add concealer on any age spots, darkness, or redness.
When planning the wedding, it is important to know the mother-of-the-groom etiquette rules, such as separate wedding showers and mother-son dances. Some mothers of the groom may do their makeup at home, but it is essential to be cautious not to have embarrassing “pancake face” or crooked eyeliner in family pictures.
To round up guests before the reception, follow these basic tips for the mother of the bride or groom: add a little color, keep things simple, add shimmery gold eyeshadow, try a subdued smokey eye, stick with tradition, and wear a soft pink lipstick. Avoid heavy makeup and opt for a soft matte base, using light concealer to cover blemishes and dark circles.

Should the mothers wear different colors? Yes, says Valiente. Communication is key to choosing colors, she says. Watching a child get married is one of the most memorable moments in a mother’s life. Should a mother of bride wear false eyelashes?
Do: Enhance your eyelashes. Enhance your eyelashes. You’ll probably have your makeup artist apply your lashes on your wedding day. Even if your natural eyelashes are full, a few individual sets will make a difference. Your eyes will stand out in photos, especially if you wear glasses.
Do: Trust your artist. Your daughter or future daughter-in-law chose a great makeup artist. Tell your artist if there’s something you don’t want, like a smoky eye or heavy contouring. But be positive, calm, and trusting. Go with the flow and trust them. Don’t: Get out of your comfort zone. You can trust a makeup artist, but you shouldn’t let them talk you into something you don’t like. If you want to look great in photos, be confident. Wearing a bold lip color won’t help you feel like the best version of yourself.
Should the mother of the bride wear hair up or down?
Elegant updos for the mother of the bride. Updos are a favorite for a reason: they’re timeless, frame your face, and work with many dress styles. You can’t go wrong with a beautiful braided bun, elegant chignon, or updo with wispy tendrils. An updo is a good choice for a classy mother-of-the-bride hairstyle. Add hair accessories like a jeweled comb or pins to your updo. If you’re wearing a bold color, keep your hair simple. These twists go well with this mother of the bride’s pink Korean hanbok.

- 8 Things the Mother-of-the-Groom Should Never Do
Want to be a great mother-of-the-groom? Here’s what you shouldn’t do before and on your son’s wedding day. Your son’s wedding is coming up, and you’re happy. You’re really happy. You’ve already secured your spot as a VIP guest, but you don’t want to upset your future daughter-in-law during the planning process or on the big day. A mother-of-the-groom should avoid acting like a bridesmaid and making empty offers.
Can mother of the groom wear the same Colour as mother of the bride?
The mother of the groom should avoid choosing a dress in the same color as the bridesmaids, the mother of the bride, or the wedding gown. She should choose a color that flatters her and doesn’t clash with the other women’s clothes in the photos. The mother of the bride usually chooses her outfit first, then tells the mother of the groom about the colors. You might also have suggestions. Tell the mothers about any accent colors or provide a fabric swatch of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Pale pinks, greens, and blues are popular colors, but black is only for fancy weddings. Your mother-in-law’s final choice should be influenced by the wedding’s hour and formality.
What makeup should the mother of the bride wear?
Enhance your features. “For the mother of the bride, less is more. Makeup should enhance, not mask, features,” says makeup artist Aimee Connolly. My go-to makeup for the mother of the bride is flawless, dewy skin with a lightly dressed eye, lots of mascara and blush, and a lip shade that complements your outfit. “This look lets you feel and look like yourself, but also glamorous,” Aimee says. Be true to your signature look. Your daughter’s wedding day isn’t the time for a drastically different look. You still want to look like yourself.
Who pays for mother of groom hair and makeup?
Who pays for the mother-of-the-bride and grooms beauty team? There’s no set rule for this. Some brides may offer to pay for hair and makeup for the wedding party. Sometimes the mother of the bride pays for hair and makeup. “Usually the mother of the bride pays for herself and sometimes the whole bridal party,” says Cohen. If the bride is paying for hair and makeup, she should treat her mother too. However, this will depend on the relationship between the bride and her mothers and whether the bride has the budget to cover these costs. When should mothers of the bride and groom avoid booking a beauty team? Sometimes a mother shouldn’t book her own beauty team. This depends on the bride and how she wants to spend her day. If your daughter’s schedule is too busy for a professional hair and makeup team, do your own beauty looks. If your daughter wants you there, be there with her. “Go along with it,” says Cohen. “Moms often want to use their usual hair and makeup team, but they end up missing part of the morning. The bride is bummed and stressed because she wants her mom there with her.”
What is the groom’s mother responsible for in a wedding?
Learn more about the mother of the groom’s role. What are the mother of the groom’s responsibilities? It can be hard to know what you should do as the mother of the groom. The mother of the bride takes care of many things, but the mother of the groom has a few responsibilities too. The groom’s mother usually plans the rehearsal dinner and makes the guest list for the groom’s family. Both tasks should be done with the bride and groom’s input. Other responsibilities can be discussed between the families. What should the mother of the groom wear? The mother of the groom should look good, but let the mother of the bride have the spotlight. If you want to stick to tradition, let the mother of the bride choose her dress first. Don’t try to outshine her or steal the spotlight. Should the mother of the groom go dress shopping with the bride? Wait and see. Let the bride invite you on this journey, don’t insert yourself. If she doesn’t invite you to dress shopping, don’t take it personally. She might want to bond with her mom, sister, or other family members before she joins your family.

Visit the bridal suite if you can. This shows she wants to be involved.
Be ready to help. Worthington says the mother of the groom should be ready to help if needed. Most brides include the mother of the groom in different activities, like picking up breakfast for the bridal suite or helping with hair and makeup. Even if the mother of the groom is just coming by for a short time, she should offer to help. Respect the bride’s wishes. The mother of the groom should remember this is the bride’s day. Kerry-Lou congratulation you are looking amazing and it is all the way I love it, everything is matching perfect. Some years ago we had a triple wedding, two of our four kids and our silver wedding anniversary. I sewed my dress myself, a 1880 evening gown from heavy dark blue silk tafeta. So I was mother of the groom, the bride and the silver bride in one go. Many greetings from hot Germany
Perfectly timed article as I’m a M of the G coming up in Nov. I can’t say enough about that inexpensive little hair scrunchie “friend”. You’re correct in that it looks better with lots of use. When it was new, I sprayed it lightly with dry shampoo to cut down on the synthetic shine. I’ve been using mine for over a year now and just give it a freshening up shake-shake and it’s good to go! You’ve given me confidence to use it on our special upcoming day, and now I’m looking for the perfect flower to clip on for this perfect style. Thank you KerryLou! 🌺
I have been binging quite a lot of your articles lately as I am going to attempt to do my own makeup for my step-daughter’s wedding. It is down to just under 4 weeks time now, so lots of practice happening. I have my dress, my two pairs of shoes, a coat – (the wedding date is just 10 days into Spring here in Australia, and the city it is being held in can get quite cold), and my clutch all picked out. Earrings are still to be chosen. (I love yours.) This article came at just the right time for me, so thank you Kerry-Lou. You look gorgeous. Congratulations to the newlyweds.
Hi Kerry. You m new to your website cause I was looking for tips on makeup with glasses. Can I just say you are stunning and I’d be happy to look like you now at 49. Sorry about you catching Covid. But glad you are better. Congratulations on your son getting married. You are so elegant. I love your look. I really feel you could help me have a make over. I like how honest you are. My question is what’s the best mirror to use and what contacts? Lots of love. Julie ❤️
Hey welcome back, so lovely to see your article and your beautiful elegant outfit, wishing your son and his lovely wife a lifetime of health and happiness, yes hot weather it is sooo hot here in the UK, which I never thought I would say!! On that note do you have any tips to avoid panda eyes in the heat? I seem to have mascara and eye liner sliding down my face after a couple of hours, which it never normally does. Thank you so much for the brilliant article and showing us how you achieved your look xxx
It’s so refreshing to see style advice for us “mature” women, especially from a contemporary who doesn’t try to turn us into something we’re not. I just turned 60 and have been following you for a year or so, and I’ve rediscovered the strong lip color that you demonstrated so well – I gave it up in my late 30s because I felt it was aging me. Thanks! P. S. My mother wore only shades of red lipstick and she would apply it perfectly without a mirror, let alone liner!
Kerry-Lou, I just wanted to let you know that you have gained a new Subscriber in me! I watched 2 articles & I was hooked! It all started with me looking for a makeup tutorial on how to cover-up age spots & I came across a article you had made about 3yrs ago. I am 56yrs old & in just the last year & a half those little boogers have been popping up a lot. And wouldn’t you just know it, the biggest one is right on my forehead! I didn’t want to look like a unicorn🦄 any longer so I’m going to use your advise & technique! I just wish I could use it on my arms were I have the most age spots. Thank you again & God Bless you & your family. You, your granddaughter & your new daughter-in-law looked beautiful & your son is very handsome! Peace, Love & Happiness from Alabama!💋
You looked beautiful and classy just loved 🥰 how you accessorized I loved everything ♥️💕♥️ I will be sharing this article to a friend whose daughter is getting married next month but it’s a beach 🏖 wedding and she is getting so frustrated because she just has no idea 🤷🏽♀️ what to wear for a beach wedding. Her daughter’s dress is formal for a beach wedding. Anyways thank you so much for sharing your son’s wedding hopefully this still help her💕❤️💕
You are gorgeous. I’m not that good at makeup and as I’ve gotten older I wear very little on a daily basis. I’m one of the minority as I love powder. Bare Minerals is my go to as it’s light and doesn’t feel “wet”. For my son’s wedding I will need to have a professional do my makeup. My go-to professional has moved out of state so I went for a trial run at a local beauty spa and she did my makeup far too warm considering I have a cool complexion. Also, the moisturizer, foundation, and airbrushed foundation made my skin feel so heavy. I have more time to try to find someone else but it’s expensive ($95) and frustrating.
Hi. I found you accidentally. Your articles say, we can be older, classy, current without trying to be 20 again and look silly. We’re not invisible because we’re older. Lol .Actually the Honeylove briefs with that sheer butt is sexy. Where is Honey love located? I’m in the United Stated. Ate your makeup no makeup tips for ladies of all color?
