How To Do The Wedding Ring Rope Trick?

The Wedding Ring rope trick is a classic magic trick that involves looping a rope through a ring, passing it over it, spinning it, dropping it on top, and then letting the ring hang from a loop in the rope. The trick involves quick movements and sleight of hand to make a solid metal ring string on a rope or make it escape from the rope. The trick is also known as the Himber Ring.

A lasso, also known as a lariat or a rope, is spun during the Mexican sport of trick roping, or Floreo de Reata. It is linked to Wild West shows or Western arts in the United States, Mexico, and Mexican Charreria. The trick involves touching a length of rope that is up to 60 feet long, one end rising into the air until the whole rope hangs perpendicular to the ground. At the upper end of the rope, an invisible entrance opens to an extradimensional space that lasts until the spell ends.

The Wedding Ring rope trick is a follow-up to the finger ring and string magic routine, using a larger ring and rope. It is a mesmerizing illusion that magicians can break the laws of the physical world, time, and space. The trick is a favorite of professional magicians and can be performed by anyone who wishes they could undo something.

  • I want to chime in as a new trick roper. The wedding band was the big trick I really wanted to learn. After days of no success I tried spinning the opposite way and got it going! The big thing with this trick is learning when and how to let get of the loop (the spinning is much easier). With that said, after days of attempts, Dan’s suggestion and demo of how to hold the rope and then release is what has me consistently getting the trick going. Once you “feel” what a successful release feels like it gets much easier. Doing this with a cowboy hat on is also very tricky, but after some successful attempts the hat is no big deal. I can get about 20 plus spins with my right arm before I get tired. If I slowly inch my left arm up I can successfully switch hands. Dan, thanks so much for your great articles! Once I master this I’ll figure out what my one will be. I enjoy practicing at the end of each work day! PS – I’m doing this with a 20 ft. rope. – How long was the last very long rope?
